Starting to think that my simple calf cramp on Monday isn't a cramp.  It has been sore since then.  I was just starting to be able to walk OK on it yesterday until I went bowling last night and it was bothering me.  Went mountain biking today and it was really starting to hurt a few times when I had to walk up some muddy sections or if I had to put a lot of power to the pedals.   Hope I didn't strain something.

disturbed275 - 2011-01-28 2:27 PM So what's everyone up to this weekend?

I just realized I am sitting 32 weeks out from IMWI.  That means the official training starts on Sunday.  That also means I need to get next month's training plan written up!

This weekend I have a 3 hour ride and a long swim. I have been really tired lately, I think it is a lack of sleep, work has been very busy.
Anyone have any good nutritional guidelines. I am horrible about my diet.  Also I am really low on motivation lately. My 1st IM is on only 98 days.
One last question. I had my bike fitted and now I am having some mild knee pain towards the end of a one hour ride and even with running now. Rest and biofreeze makes it go away. Should I worry about it or go back to the bike shop and have them readjust the bike. I was thinking of raising the saddle a bit, but I don't know.

Where is the knee pain?  Do you know what changes they made during your fitting?

The pain is on the outside. It feels like the fibular collateral ligament, at least that is what I am guessing. It is definitely the outside or lateral if you know your anatomy. Maybe it is the illiotibial band, but it feels like it is at the fibular head.

I do not know what they did to the bike. The handbars where move the stem was flipped, the saddle was moved around. The girl doing the fitting said I may have some knee pain and seemed to be trying to decide between doing 2 different things. But I feel like, if I could only stretch my legs out a little more, when I'm riding I would be more comfortable.

Definitely go back in.  The key to IM is being comfortable on the bike.  If your current fit is not allowing that then get it adjusted.  No sense fighting it for the next few months

I have a question about bike fitting.  I currently (and last year) ride a road bike w/ aero bars for my rides/tris.
However, after after about 4-5 miles...my feet start to go numb.  I have had my bike fitted and refitted multiple times to
no avail.  Between an uncomfortable seat (which I'm currently waiting for my Cobb seat to be delivered!) and my feet constantly going numb....I'm loosing all motivation for biking!

Is this normal?  Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I also have a question involving race strategy and training. Should I try to have a negative split during the swim? I am wondering if that is a good idea, or if I should try and slow down a bit before the bike. Just wondering what everyone else focuses on.

This is definitely not normal.  Most likely it is an issue with your shoes.  A couple of things to try may be loosening the straps just a bit.  It may be cleat positioning too.  You could try moving the cleats back 2-3mm toward the rear of your shoe.  It could also be the fit of the shoe too.  If you wear socks, try a different pair.  I'd hate to suggest new shoes, but if worse comes to worse you may want to consider it.

Negative splitting the swim isn't necessarily a bad idea.  Just don't try and kill it the last 100yds or so or you heart rate will go through the roof.  Normally the only thing focus on near the end of the swim (aside from getting myself to dry land) is making sure that I kick my legs a bit more that last few hundred yards.  It gets the blood flowing down there again and will make it easier to stand up and run

I'm back in action. Doctor took off the soft cast on Friday and gave me ok to swim and bike. Running will have to wait a bit. I'm looking at March 1st to start. That gives me 6 weeks to build up to full time running and then 6 weeks before my first sprint tri in June. Keep your fingers crossed.

Ok well, I changed my saddle and raised it up a bit. I did 51 miles on hills this sat. That night I swam 2500 yards and did a leg strength work out. NO KNEE PAIN!Surprised

So I did some help. I need to get some aerobars and a new saddle (3hrs = soreness).  The aerobars need to fit a specialized tarmac pro. I think that is what I'm riding? It is my brothers bike. I am thinking about getting Profile Design T2+ but have heard they can cause wrist pain.  I will need some aeorbars for IMSG May 7th and would like to get in some training with them.

I was recently looking at the T1 Viper and the T2 Cobra to add to my Specialized Roubaix.  I ended up going with the Viper based mainly on hearing the same thing about the T2 design leading to wrist pain.  I can not verify any issues with the T2 design but I just love the T1 Viper.  These are the only aero bars I have ridden on but can't imagine anything being much more comfortable then them and they are extremely adjustable.

Bad news, it does appear that my calf pain is do to a strained muscle.  For right now, running is out of the question.

Good news, cycling does not seem to bother it at all unless I try to really put some power into the pedals like pushing hard up a big hill.  I road 15 miles mountain biking Friday and 53 miles on the road bike Sunday and the leg felt pretty good.

Awesome that the adjustment fixed the knee pain!  I would suggest getting those aerobars as soon as possible.  Riding for several months with the exact setup you'll be using at IMSG will be beneficial.  I have T2+ bars and I remember getting some wrist pain my first season using them.  I think I've gotten used to them.  Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing

Bummer   The good news is you can still bike.  It's no fun when you have to sit both out

Just to let you all know I am waiting on the biggest cyclone (hurrincane) ever coming our way.  So the training is off for a while, I've packed up as much as I can.  Pray for us all please, I am really scared.  500km wide cyclone, with 280km winds for up to 17 hours because it is so big!!!  Hopefully I'll be back on line by the weekend.
