Jamie,
That sounds great to me. I'll commit to that. I've got a bike fitting for both my bikes next week so that will help me a lot I'm sure.

I'm down for the challenge - great idea. I've been lazy during me trainer sessions...probably spend less than 5% in aero. I'll start with 25%, then start bumping up as I feel ready for it.

Yesterday I did a 90 minute run while my oil was getting changed. Today I think I'll do a 90 bike/45 run brick (first of the season)! Then, on to my nephew's 4th B-day party in the afternoon.

It will be a huge advantage for IMTX to be able to do it predominately in aero. You will likely notice a a large chunk of the field riding the bullhorns and sitting up on lap 2 of the bike. Kills me every time. They buy these insanely expensive bikes, obsess over 50 grams of additional weight and then ride it sitting up. Really, really bad idea at any distance. Don't be that person!

Got my ride in today - 80 mins. back and forth 10 mins at my HIM target HR 10 mins about 10 bpm above.  About 60/40 aero/non aero...maybe closer to 50/50.  I am just having a lot of trouble getting comfortable lately.

Found a new Adamo Road on ebay from a store in the Florida, 107 and free shipping to Canada.  So hopefully that gets here soon and we'll see if that makes a difference.

I am definitely down with the aero challenge.  I find on the road I have an easier time staying aero but on the trainer, and keep in mind this is my first real year of using the trainer, I am having more trouble.

I would say it its looking about 50/50 to make it through Feb.  We'll see, I promised myself I would stick with it till the 30k race.  But that is 1 month into my 16 week HIM plan.  So I will see where I am at by the end of Feb and if I have seen some slight improvements I will stick it out.  I am going to try now to start adding in a lot more distance to take advantage of the easier pace.

so lets see Clewis in Los Vegas was doing his run in 60F while I was doing my run at -42 ok who's the fool.

At it again running outside tomorro just a nice 8 miles and yes its suppose to warm up to a wonderful -24 but sunny and it is a dry cold they say

Had a good work out this morning 3.5 hours on the stationary in spin classes so better than nothing and it was indoors.

I am spending more time this year stretching after workouts and it is paying dividends, My muscles are definately reacting to the work loads better with taking that extra few minutes to say thank you to them.

I have been spending most of my time in aero.  Which was difficult to do last year due to lower back tightness.  So far I am only experiencing a stiff neck, so its an improvement...

Today was a mile swim and a 4 mile run with 6 intervals mixed in.

Long ride tomorrow.  Probably going to ride the High Cliff course on my CT...

Did a rather annoying 7 miles on the dreadmill this morning & will do a longer ride on the trainer tomorrow.  I have a roadie and rarely get into the drops during trainer sessions, but am willing to do so if it will make me a faster cyclist!

Also, I have a Cycleops Jet Fluid trainer which is expensive and in the same price range as the KK.  From what I saw these two trainers were pretty compatible in user satisfaction and quality.  It's been good to me and I would highly recommend it.

If you are going to race the roadie then doing it in the drops will make you more aerodynamic than riding upright.

Thanks for the info on the cycleops. I know they had a model that is always compared favorably to the KK road machine but wasn't sure what model it was.

jamiej - 2011-01-22 10:19 AM Bike/run done for the day. FTP test tomorrow. I was thinking on the bike today that one thing the entire group can do together is to commit to train in the aero position >90-95% of the time. For those of us indoors on the trainer this is really, really easy. My routine for years now is to do the entire workout, no matter if its 60 mins or 6hrs, in the aero position. I sit/stand/stretch for 30 seconds at :15 and :45 past the hour. At the top and bottom of each hour I allow myself to sit/stand/stretch for 60 seconds. I realize that on the road this is hit or miss but on the trainer there really are no excuses. Training yourself to generate the power and be (semi) comfortable in aero for hours is one of the easiest ways to gain free speed on the bike. It also teaches you a few things about your bike setup, your saddle and your flexibility. Start by doing 25% of your time in aero and then work up to the point where >90% of your time is in aero by mid-Feb. That would be a great goal. If you ride roadie w/o bars then stay in the drops. Be certain to grip the aero bars lightly just like you would on the road. Don't lay your hands on top. For those of you riding straight extension you might be surprised at how much strain gripping those things puts on your wrists, lats and lower back. For those of you training with power, you need to be doing all of your testing in aero as well. Interval does NOT mean sit up to generate more power. You need to adapt to generate that power in aero position. Sound good? Jamie

Sounds good to me.  I spent an hour on the trainer last night and remained aero with the exception of about 2-3 minutes total (for water).  I kept in mind what you said about racing in aero, therefore you should train in aero.  The other thing it did was made me realize how many times I wanted  to come up on the horns.  I'm definitely in though.

Right now, tri bike is on the trainer, so i do 90% or so aero.  Tomorrow's plan is 1650 in the pool and then home and on trainer for 60 to 90 minutes.

Got 10 miles in this morning running on a 1/8 mile track.  Was dizzying! hahaha!

That will be July!!!!  Hope you have a good pool till then!  All kidding aside, if you dont have a wetsuit yet, start looking, you WILL need it in Lake Michigan.  Last July, water temp for Racine HIM was 61.  If you are going to do Rev3 in Ohio, that could be a 60s swim too.  Lake Erie gets cold too.

Ok, had a bad workout day. I decided to buy rollers and fought it all the way. Gave up after 1/2hr and switched back to the trainer. The LBS gave me a month to test drive the rollers so I'll give it another try later. Stayed in Z3 with cadence of 80 and got in 8 miles. Tomorrow will be better

I bought and sold my rollers about a year ago. Nothing wrong with them. I got pretty good at them but after several hours on rollers/trainers I get pretty brain dead. I didn't want to wipe out in the basement and hurt myself. That's pretty much why I got rid of my set. Do you have a trainer also?

Nice job. I run on a 1/7 track. It's not fun but better than putting on 10lbs of clothes to go outside in the temps right now!

I have my 10 mile long run scheduled this morning, but it will be on the treadmill.  It's -8F windchill and I ain't running outside for 90 mins in that crap..lol.

Then another 1200y swim today shortly after the run.  Not sure how well that will go given the short recovery time between the run and the swim.

All I've got to say is I don't know how you guys up north stay focused during the winter.  It's pretty impressive really.  I get cold when it's 20 or less, nevermind below zero.  Nice job.

Believe me. If it wasn't for my stupid job I would be moving south in a heartbeat. Just the mere sight of snow makes me angry. I must be getting old....

You're not alone Jamie.  I've been looking hard for a job down south in my field without much luck.  My company has offices in FL, NV, and AZ but none of them are looking for anyone right now so I can't transfer.

I agree this IMTX will reward riders who can maintain aero. I just have clip on bars on my roadie...too cheap to buy a tri bike. It makes it even more satisfying when I pass people on full carbon TT, with zipps going whoosh, whoosh.

Mostly successful 2hr, 15min trainer ride yesterday, probably 90-95% in aero. Found that reading Lava magazine passes the time far better than watching TV. I do think I need a new saddle though - my nether region went totally numb.

Today I'll get in that brick I avoided yesterday. =)

x3 on that!  Lake Michigan is always nastyazz cold!  xterra always has good deals going on and if you do the BT survey, they give you a discount for $250 off the list price on any of their suits.  Seems like a good deal unless they are way overpriced to begin with?

On a separate note, I did 85 minutes on the trainer today with the first 30 in the drops which felt pretty good.  Decent ride today!  Time to kick back and prepare for the NFC & AFC battles this afternoon!

Nice workouts guys. Aero is the key. I did my first 2 IM's on a roadie with clip ons. Nothing wrong with that. As you get into it, you'll get more toys and a dedicated bike. That's how it goes for most people. I think pretty much everybody changes saddles a time or two.

Scott, I assume you were on the trainer with the cheesehead hat on? I'm from the 'burgh so we may have to have a little bet later on........

Good run yesterday in the cold, made it 13.7m.  Skipped the long bike today to get in a swim session with my buddy who serves the swim coach.  He beat me up, didnt give me much time to think, and I had a pretty positive swim.

Would go for a ride this afternoon, but its hard to stay aero with a beer and a terrible towel...
