1st race done! Actually felt pretty good for little training. Tim is was a odd type of race as you do a serpintine swim indoors then run outside and bike/run. This was a very hilly bike course in the wet, i hit 43mph just coasting. Too bad you had to go back up. Great run through miami of ohio campus. Ill post more when i have faster than 56kbs. Lol. Hope its nicer for you guys cold and raining here.

Glad to hear it went well.  Wouldn't be too crazy about doing 43 MPH on wet pavementSurprised.  Sounds like you kept the laughing passing bikers to a minimum -haha

Iceman, I think you're more of a freak than Tim is.  (it's meant to be a compliment)

That was me who said I cramped up at a quarter mile into the run.  I'll need to practice that bike-to-run switch to make sure my body will get used to it.  As for the nutrition, I'm going to start reading up on it, and take Tim's advice on starting to track my intake to see how much good and junk food I'm consuming.  I'm almost afraid to try.

Good stuff, Dave.  Congrats on the finish.  43mph?  Sweet.

Good Afternoon Team.

I hope everyone is having a great day. Another wet, cool, windy one here in Southwetern OntarioFrown. I am currently doing my 2010 taxes - what fun - good thing the weather is crappy!

I am scheduled for a run today but I am not sure I will get it in - may skip a day today - Have been in the pool for the past 5 days and I think I am just going to take it easy on my body today.

Peter - hope your daughter is well and I am sure your next swim will be awesome.

Tim - thanks for the great idea to start using the nutrition resources right here on BT. I need to start doing that.

Jen - I am not sure you are ever sure you are doing the right things until you compete and do it then learn I guess. Although, I think the resources in this group will get you as close to ready as you can get (Coach, Tim, IceMan, Caleb, Deb and everyon else who is so awesome and willing to share in here).

IceMan - as usual, great post on nutrition.

Coach - way to go!

OK - enough fun - back to my taxes Yell

KC

George - I think you will be surprised at what you actually consume but it will be good for you.  And yes Iceman is a freak-haha - Scott is one of the most dedicated people I have ever seen and is a machine - definitley an inspiration for us all.

I got a great run in today.  Tried to simulate my race pace for marathon in two weeks.  I will be shooting for a 9:00/mile pace to build a small 9 sec per mile cushion.  The weather absolutely SUCKED with blowing 20 MPHwind, frozen ice, rain and sleet.  I met one of my training partners on the run at mile 3 (he is a 2:55 marathoner) so he turned around and ran an extra 4 miles with me.  i think I was slowing him down but I picked up my pace.  I felt good and ran 10 in 1:27 averaging about 8:45/mile.  I think I am ready for my race.  Time to shut it down and taperCool

Yes I mix the GU with water in a Fuel Belt sized bottle.  3 to bottle.  Thats about an hour worth of cals.  They taste like chocolate milk and go down easy.  You hage to drink water with GU anyway so why not do it all at once. Liquid sits easier on my stomach.

Tim, you rock!  Literally.  He has a band people.

I did my 90 mins on the bike with the 2 X 20 mins at 100% plus and then ran easy in a 30 mph wind and rain for 10 miles.  Then yoga.  Feel pretty good.

Have a great day!

Ice.

No - but almost LOL. However, I picked myself up, dusted myself off, cleaned and bandaged my knee and did eventually get my ride in. It was pathetic, so bad in fact I actually had to document it - 3.7 meters before I fell Embarassed.

Nice running by the way.

Hi everyone. Hope everyones training is going well. I watched my first Tri today. I went out to Rage in the Sage. The weather was prefect and I finally got to see how everything goes. The swim...transitions...the bike...more transitions...the run...and finally the finish. It was great I learned a lot of DONTS and some DOs. It was awesome to watch. I saw I few people fall off their bikes because they didn't start off in a low gear going up the hill after transition. I felt for them. Went for a nice 5k run after. Im hoping the weather stays in the 70-80s for my Tri. 45mile bike tomorrow I'm excited because it's the most challenging ride I've been on.

Impressive work this weekend. I'm intimidated by you guys.

Question for the group: Had an 1:30 ride today.  Did ok on the ride out, but really started to feel the legs about at the turn around.  Ended up getting off the bike for a stretch, clif bar, water.  Then got back on.

Seemed to help for about 5-10 minutes, but then was right back with the leg exhaustion.  Only thing that kept me moving was 2min on, 1min off intervals.  Otherwise I would have gone super slow the ride back.

Was supposed to be LT bike test, but I'm on my second go round of this week of my plan.  Have easy 75min bike tomorrow.

What should I have done?  Would you have stopped?  Pushed through and keep it easy (which would have been 4-5 mph slower than normal)?  Done the intervals like i did to keep some muscular work?

Hey Team.

FYI - Caleb has a sprint tomorrow - GO GET IT CALEB - Good luck and enjoy.

Jen - awesome idea to go and watch to see how things work. Sounds like a lot more fun then me doing taxes - yuk!

Mary - As you know I am not that familiar with all the proper do's and don'ts but from the sounds of it - you did what you had to do and you got it done - sounds like a success to me Smile - nice job.

KC

Sorry I've been MIA for a few days.  Been busy.  When you're moving everyone wants to hang out with you all of a sudden.  Good problem to have though.

Anywho, sprint race tomorrow.  Like Dave's; 400m serpentine pool swim, 12m bike, 2m run.  This tri was my very first tri last year so it will be interesting to see how much I've improved.  Last year I finished 24th out of 35 in my age group.  I'm hoping to crack top 10 this year but don't know if my run is strong enough.  Guess I'll find out in about 12 hours.

Caleb - You'll be just awesome, can't wait to hear all about it.

Dave - 43mph? <gulp> that's uhm, REALLY fast. FANTASTIC job. Tell us more when you get back to somewhere with a normal connection!

My 45 mile training ride today turned into a 29 mile pleasure ride. I honestly didn't mind though, as I got to do a loop of my HIM course. Oh boy was it windy too. I went with my friend and her 'boyfriend', and he wasn't up for more (Lightweight Wink). I'm just happy I got to ride the course. It's beautiful, I'm actually getting more excited now.

I tried 'infinit' again today on my ride, I'm not entirely sure that I like 100% liquid nutrition, I think I like having something to eat, but will keep testing as it was far from race simulation today.

This is just a suggestion.  I'm not a coach.  But LT testing should be done on fresh legs.   The idea is to get as good a reading as possible. You can't do that when you are struggling from the night before.  What rest days are you doing?  Everybody needs rest days.  They are when we get stronger. Workouts tear up the muscle, the rest days are when they heal stronger than before.  Without rest we are wasting our time.  So if it were me, I would plan the LT after a normal rest day or add one. And when I say rest, I don't mean light workouts.  I mean go to a movie, spend time with the spouse, nap, whatever, but don't touch a bike, put on run shoes, go to the pool, lift a weight.  Nothing.  We all need at least one rest day a week.

As for what I would do if I'm cooked?  I would shift to easier gears, keep the spin high to keep circulation moving to clear out the lactic acid, hydrate and watch the birds and the deer and get home when I get home.   And then REST.  Love rest.

40 degrees, 18 mph wind, 31 degree wind chill.   I just can't see punishing the body and the brain for 3 hours in that. I am doing the long ride on the CT. Watching a movie, working on spin scan (it's a CT program to improve spinning efficiency) and single pedal drills.  I might do a little of the Wisconsin IM course too.  I cannot wait until this weather straightens up so I can take a long ride and remember why I love bikes.
