Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jay, RPE is rate of perceived exertion. It is another way to train, outside of HR (heart rate) or watts (power output) or pace or cadence. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() chrisbowers - 2012-01-18 9:13 PM Collie, Sorry to hear about the knee. Will it require surgery or just rest and healing time? I hope you have a quick recovery. Well it's been difficult, I have all the treatment I can in order for it to heal, I have rested it, I have been on anti inflamatories.. and it was going well, but blew up in size again the other day. I think I should cut my losses and get the miniscus out, either way at the moment I can't run.. I can't cycle.. It's dissappointing. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know it's terribly disappointing. I hope you can get into the doctor quickly, get the proper treatment advice and then get on with the business of healing and rehab. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Brian, Rest days are an absolute must in everyone's training plan. Glad the weekend rest helped. As for the cold, I know it doesn't get super cold here in the Memphis area, but it can still really mess with my motivation. Plus the short daylight hours don't help me. On the other hand, I got a chance to run in Central Park in NYC this past weekend twice and I had no motivation problems even though it was much colder than I am used to. It seems to me that the battle in our minds is always tougher than whether or not our bodies can handle whatever we throw at them. One of my favorite quotes: "There is no such thing as bad weather only soft people.". |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() plumline387 - 2012-01-17 9:08 PM Cynthia, Pretty heavy schedule you have there. I assume you have done this before since you have some longer distances in there. What length race are you training for? Also, stupid question...what does RPE stand for? Jay Hi Jay, I am using the beginner HIM training plan though I do not plan on doing a HIM this year. After reviewing the plan it looked doable to me so figured I would give it a try. If you look at my training log you would see that i usually miss a bike during the week. Still working out the kinks. I see someone answered the RPE question. I never work too hard so just keeping up is my goal and I like the details of the plan. We'll see how things go in a week when the hours increase...I am sore and tired as it is but work is a bear right now and that plays into the exhaustion part. Also, I cannot swim that fast...my swims take longer than the allotted time. Edited by SportzVision 2012-01-19 7:16 PM |

Also, I cannot swim that fast...my swims take longer than the allotted time. My swim sucks. I just started this month. The first day, I had to rest each time that I crossed the pool and I do not mean just rest. I mean gasping for air. I have improved quickly, but still have a long way to go. Now, two weeks later, I can swim 3-4 laps continuously and then I rest between each lap. But I make myself go across and back without stopping. Keep it up, it will come. Before this year, my idea of swimming involved a lazy river, a floatation device and lots of suntan lotion. |

How did the new shoes feel? Did you go to a running specific store and get fitted for them? I'm just curious because when I went to Fleet Feet, they did an analysis of my gait and said that my feet pronated, so they picked a pair of shoes that helped with that. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So what does everyone have on the training plan for today? I am planning on a 12 mile trail run with my wife. I enjoy running and cycling with my family. I can't always get higher intensity work done with them, but I can't think of a better way to spend time together. Does everyone have the support of their significant other for all their training? Luckily, I do. If not, what do you do to keep training and to keep the peace? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No training, not even swimming, couldn't be bothered... Will talk to the surgeon on Monday and see what to do.... just keeping in shape with a couple of weights, can't really do anything else. Hopefully will manage a half iron man in September... |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had my longest run of 4.76 miles on the treadmill today (ice on the roads outside). Then strength training after lunch while my wife watches Moneyball. She just had surgery on her foot so she can't work out until maybe next week. We do our strength work together whenever possible and she has been supportive. |

Now, I am not much faster but I can do a lot of laps. And the improvements just keep coming! I still like a good float down the river on a sunny warm day! The other night I was running on the treadmill and remembered how I struggled to walk a mile in a half hour on the treadmill and now the goal is to run a 5K in less than 30 mins. And I am getting close! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Woke up this morning and the wind was howling and the rain was dumping so I decided to go do a spin class this morning. There's nothing better than sweating a gallon and sucking for air at 7 on a Saturday morning!.....well, sitting in a jacuzzi ranks right up there too!

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did a short swim this morning (650 yards), and will do strength training tonight. I'm traveling, so my swimming is at the mercy of whoever shows up in the hotel pool.My wife doesn't work out, but gives me a lot of latitude. She's finishing her degree, so spends lots of time studying. Gives me the freedom for evening swims or strength training. |

Good job! I have a kid headed over the pass from Fresno today...they made it to Colfax so hopefully the weather holds until she is home safe in NV! The wind was crazy yesterday morning! |

Is the hotel pool big enough to get a few strokes in before bumping into the side? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Did 2450 in the pool yesterday, two workouts in one session. Swimming is getting a lot easier but I still lack the speed. I guess it will come around some day. Another swim day for me and on the trainer tonight. Funny story, my middlest daughter plays basketball in Fl and always calls after a game, good or bad she calls. Yesterday was not good, they lost. Her words and voice conveyed how frustrated she was with her own defensive playing. She is a 5'8" post player and when they are 6' + it can be hard. She went on and on about her lack of defense and we discussed what she needs to do...talk to coach for more tips, foot work, plyo, yatta yatta...as we are starting to say our goodbyes she does give me one more stat, "Well", she says,"I did score 24 pts."! I just laughed so hard. She is as tough as nails and no one is ever going to be tougher on her. This is the kid who tells me to stop being a mental midget, be tough, push harder....she must get this from her father! Love when my girls teach me something. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good job today Ken. I slept on the couch and watched football. Maybe the trainer tonight. Cynthia, your daughter sounds like someone that will do well, no matter what she does. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's about 10 yards long, so I can get a few strokes before I have to turn. I'm using it mainly to keep the breathing practice... Just started swimming in November, and don't want to lose what progress I've made while I travel. |
