Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just registered for the 5k on Feb 19. That makes, what, three of us? Come on local peeps, who else is in?? Link to register. In other news, I have less than no time at home today. But I will do some form of working out today. Either ride the trainer tonight or a (dreaded) treadmill run. If I work out I am bound to feel better, right?? Right! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Peppah - 2012-01-24 10:26 PM Do you have a Garmin or other sports watch? What model do you have? Is there another model you covet? What do you use it for and how often? I've been researching some of these devices and would love to hear the group's opinions. I have a Garmin 305 (the older red one). I love it for running. I have it display time, avg pace, and distance, but what I look at most often is distance. I like having all the info at the end though. I am really bad - there have been occasional times when I've run without it and I keep looking at my wrist out of habit. I never really used it effectively for biking. I did have the cadence sensor and liked that, but then it stopped working (tried the obvious change the battery, but was never able to get it to work again). Back when I was biking more, I didn't realize the auto-pause feature existed. I was forever either forgetting to stop it or forgetting to restart it! I was better off with the just the computer on my bike. My sister got a Garmin for Christmas and I think it's one of the 405s (the one that looks more like a watch). I'm not sure how she's doing with that yet. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TriB4Bride - 2012-01-23 3:49 PM My Confession: I HATE the bike, I Think I actually rode my bike 3x for my last tri. Love swimming, Enjoying running. Me and the bike havent reached common ground yet. Fear of falling and living in a urban area at the time didnt help. Clipless, sounds like a death sentence to me You know, the bike isn't my favorite either. I LOVE to run and enjoy swimming (in a pool). It's not that I don't enjoy riding once I'm out there, but it's just so much more effort than the other two - helmet, shoes, gloves, water bottles, pumping tires, chance of flats, etc.... (I once got 6 over a 2 day bike tour! I am the flat queen and consequently run Gatorskins now.) I am also a fair weather biker - I'll run in single digit temps, but 60 F is about my cut-off on the bike (it's always warm on the trainer!). What I have found that I enjoy is biking with other people. I have been lucky to find people at work who like to ride and once it warms up we usually pick one night per week to ride. Are there group rides in your area? Our LBS rides two nights/week from the shop (when it's warmer). They are WAY too fast for me, but I tried twice to go on their slower nights. Even though they dropped me, I still learned a lot. Watching other people and when they clip/unclip, how they handle (or don't handle) their bikes can be useful. I have a friend (who unfortunately isn't local) who leads no-drop group rides in his area. They will have a faster pack that sometimes takes off, but someone always makes sure everybody has someone to ride with and gets back safely. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() chr15 - 2012-01-25 11:24 AM For the bike I use an app on my iPhone called cyclemeter. It uses the phone's GPS to track distance and elevation against time. It also maps and logs your route. I have my phone anyway, which is always in a pouch in my pocket so I couldn't justify the money for a garmin or similar too. I love the fact that also you can set the app to give you vocal feed back on (all of) the parameters. I always carry my iPhone too; I use the RunKeeper app for GPS/mapping/distance/pace/calories/elevation. True, the Garmin can apparently upload your data to your BT logs directly....lacking that gadget, I just copy my planned workout to 'actual' and type in my details. |

All group rides should be no-drop in my opinion. My club has groups of varying ability and it is the rule that no-one is left behind. Ask at your LBS there may be others in your situation that you could team up with and start your own group.
Thanks for the feedback... Whats LBS? |

![]() | ![]() The weather here remains so mild. I rode outside yesterday morning. I was fine except for my feet. I wish I had put on my booties. I am hoping to go back out today...if I am successful I will have done all my rides this week OUTSIDE!!! Just crazy. Chris...I hate diets, because I believe that they dont change behavior and thats what need to happen to have weight loss. I have been eating only fruits veggies and protien this week, making sure I drink plenty of water. I weighed in this am and I was down 2. I am going to allow myself 1 "cheat day" per week and hopefully the weight loss will continue. I dont have a lot to loose but its tough!!! BTW, glad you will virtually run with us on Feb 19th!!!

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The weather is really crazy. Mav - outdoor riding for a whole week in January is pretty much unheard of! (too cold for me, and more problematic - not enough light). Can you guys help keep me honest and get me out the door to run this weekend? I figure if I tell you all that I'm intending to, I'll be less inclined to talk myself out of going! It hasn't been a good running week - between my work meeting schedule and my husband's, it's been a bad week for getting to the gym at lunch time. The gym is just a mile down the hill from where I work so I typically go at lunch time, but my husband and I carpool together (because it's a 45 minute drive) so sometimes one of us needs the car to be at a meeting at another building. I *could* run from work (we do have a locker room and shower), but it's not as nice as running from the gym mostly because it's on top of a big hill! Well and the showers aren't as nice... OK - it's lunch time! Have a good weekend everybody! |

totally agree! i always feel so restricted when i'm "dieting" and then it backfires on me... i'm trying to be better about how i think about eating healthy this time around... i'm trying to be more conscious of what i'm eating and why. like am i bored? or will this food really help me and fuel me/give me energy for the day??? before i was looking at what i could vs. couldn't eat. now i'm trying to think about how it will make me feel energy-wise. having said that, i think the cheat day is so critical, too!! my cheat day is every sunday. it helps that the superbowl is on a sunday, haha!! marianne, that is awesome that you are down 2 lbs this week!! |

Nothing more motivating than some pressure from your mentor group, haha! I have a 6 miler planned for Sunday. Do you have a specific distance/day planned for your run?? We will get you out there!!! I have a 1hr run tomorrow and a 2hr run on Sunday. I often put on my workout clothes first thing in the mOrning. Yes, let us know how far and when you are going out; we can check in ! How about- set out your fave running clothes and garmin/iPod all ready to go & put the run on your grocery/errand list.At the moment I am sitting in the car in the Y parking lot, in a downpour, and my toddler is snoring in the backseat. I feel bad / selfish about waking him up so I can go in and train ! Argh ![]() ![]() |

Just as long as there are no more distracting coyotes! I think I am going to lay out my running gear tonight. No specific distance planned - but I was thinking something in the 6.5-8 mile range ("around the block" is ~6.5 miles and it's pretty easy to make that 7-8ish). |

Sounds like everyone has a busy weekend ahead. Definetly think we sholuld all make a similar commitment for next sunday morning, I know I will not be tracking calories when at the Annual Super Bowl Party (My friends parents have had one 33 years straight, something crazy like that) knowing I got a good run or swim in that morning should lessen the guilt. Although I am hoping a Patriots win will distract from that too. On that note just logged my first tri specific exercise in over a week.. lame Edited by TriB4Bride 2012-01-27 3:43 PM |

![]() | ![]() COURTNEY...DID YOU RUN YET????? Nice work Erica and Erin!!!! After reading what you guys wrote yesterday I forced myself out the door to run. It was only drizzling when I started but then I got caught in some serious rain. I was cold !!! But I kept thinking...you dont have any little kids or other commitments... I am healthy and able to run....suck it up and do it!!! So thanks you guys Today it is sunny and breezy. I am going to ride 2-3 hours. I really hate the trainer and would rather bundle up and ride outdoors than park my butt on the trainer. Get outside this weekend...you will be happy you did!!!!! |
