I have a question about pre-workout-specifically before running-meals...

what is best to eat, and how long before training is it best to eat?

I ask because I went running tonight and had to cut the circuit short because I started tasting my last meal which I had eaten about 40 minutes before.

Are you talking full meal or snack?  If we're talking full meal, like dinner (400-600 calories, carbs, protein, fat) then I guess I usually wait at least an hour or two.  If it's just a snack, like a bar or some oatmeal or fruit, then maybe a half hour?  I think it varies per person.  Try an hour next time, see how that goes.  Maybe a little trial and hopefully not too messy of an error to find out what you need.  I've never had any issues, of course I just jinxed that and I'll yack in the pool tonight.

Hah no I'm ashamed to say it was 2 bowls of corn flakes, not something I usually eat but I was feeling lazy. I'll follow your advice and just make sure I've had an hour or so before I train. I genuinely hope you don't have a mishap at the pool, that would be awkward!

i like to wait at least an 90 minutes after a meal and less than that for a snack.

typically you want to avoid high fiber foods and fatty foods before running.  both tend to sit heavy in your stomach.  good foods would include some fruits/veggies, yogurt, and refined carbs.  normally refined carbs wouldn't be good to eat over higher fiber whole wheat, but since they are refined they are already partially broken down making it easier for your body to digest.

This is different for everybody... It will take time to figure out ur body. In running with everything "jostling" around a little more, i think ur stomach tends to be more sensitive to food before workouts than other exercise. I eat something SMALL 30-60 mins before I run... Like a nutri-grain bar, but not a meal. Just something for energy. But with that said I have a friend who was an alternate for the Olympic marathon team and he has been known to eat eggs, bacon, pop tarts and even the occasional beer before a run. So it'll take time to figure it out, but I would recommend starting small and working ur way up if u so desire something more.

I should read further down the thread before responding.... So essentially what the other guys said! Oh well, I didn't have anything better to do anyway.

1700 yards in the pool tonight.  I think I've started to build up a little endurance because instead of just doing 50's and thinking I was spent, I did a few back to back 100's and some 150's and felt just as gassed as I did after 50, so I kind of attribute that to getting comfortable in the water and knowing maybe not how to breath properly in terms of face in the water and whatnot, but able to pace my breath so I can keep swimming and know I'm not going to drown.  I'll take my little improvements but I am realizing that I need to get those lessons before I pick up too many bad habits.  I know I'm 100% wrong with how my arms enter the water and my breathing is terrible.  Only can get better from here.

snuck in a 3 mile run and 30 mins of strength training after lunch.   I never thought planning time to train would be this hard,  having a 5 month old is a lot of work.

should have about 3 hrs to spend at the Rec Center tomorrow.  Going to work on my swimming and want to bike 30 miles.

Did squats today for first time in awhile,  back of my thighs are singing.

Pretty much same as above,  everyone is different.  I can eat 20 mins before a 5k or 10k ,  my wife has to wait 2+ hrs

Like they said trial and error.

sounds like your making progress.  Are you doing flip turns?

I need to start swimming more,  seems like when I do get the time to workout I cop out and run because it is such a fast and easy way just to get a workout in.

Thanks everyone, i think I'll wait at least an hour next time. I think the last time I ran it had been about 3+ hours since I had eaten.

Good swim this morning, I'm not really counting lengths, instead I'm just concentrating on not lifting my head and getting the hang of breathing, I think I'm getting there, I'm not having to lift my head, spluttering out of the water anymore...!

Not in any way, shape or form.  I have this horrible habit of breathing in through my nose regardless of how I'm swimming, so flipping myself over is not in the plan right now.  I experimented for a few minutes last night with nose plugs and I think that will help me a lot with keeping my head in the water and getting my breathing right.  They do lessons on Saturdays and Sundays at the Y, I'm going to see what they offer for a set of 3 and if I can space them out a few weeks apart and such.

Good morning everyone! No training to report (this time it was a really late night at work that got me - yay science!), but I thought I'd focus on the plus side of things today and say that I've been eating really well the past few days. I put on several pounds after my IM, so I'm working on getting back into the 120s by the time I have to squeeze into my wetsuit in May. I was 131 this morning, so not too far to go, although ideally, I'd like to get to the mid 120s. I'm sure my weekend in Austin will help that! Speaking of which, I'll probably be MIA the next few days since I leave early tomorrow. Have a good weekend!

Just got signed up for swim lessons!  Wooo!  First lesson is on Saturday!

Also got 1000y in the pool today, I was able to do a couple sets of 200y and the rest was form focused.  It's nice I can go that far without stopping!  And I probably could've gone (a little) farther if I had to.

Where I live we lose power all the time.  It's horrible.  I'm in NH, but not in the back woods or anything like that.  I'm 5 minutes from a major highway, only about 50 minutes from Boston, I'm just on this wooded street that has a canvas of trees covering it and every storm something comes down and gets us for a few days.  Hopefully you don't lose it for too long.  Hook the generator up to the bike?  Free power!

"Hell Hath No Fury" = "Jon hath no legs left".  I figured I'd try and brush up for the Tour of Sufferlandia by doing a practice of the first day.  Yup.  Tour is going to suck.  It was a great workout though but doing 8 more days straight of that intensity is going to be the end of me.

I'm gonna go ahead and ask it... What is all this suffer feat stuff? I know a cycling training video series of sorts. Is it good? What all do I need for it? Is it worth it?

Got to the Rec Center, only had 30 mins before the old ladies swim class started so I got 900 yds in, thought I did pretty good, Bouht a new Ironman watch so I can start timing myself,  all 9  sets of 100 yds were between 1:55 and 2:05

Then as quickly as I could I went upstairs and rode 30 miles on the spin bike took 65 mins Then did 20 mins of stretching.  My quads are still screaming from those squats I did yesterday.

IMO it is very good.  all you need for it is a computer, bike trainer, and a bike. it is indeed worth it.

The links cover it, but if you don't want to click, Sufferfest is a series of videos that these cruel bastards put out to use in conjunction with your trainer that place you in a cycling racing scenario and then tell you how hard you should be going, and as per the name, the workouts are brutal if done correctly.  Combine the videos with the specific workouts in TrainerRoad and it's a big mess of sweat on the floor.  The Tour of Sufferlandia is this promotion they are running with TrainerRoad to get as many people as possible to do 9 days in a row of their insanity and they are giving away some prizes.

From other responses in threads about the Tour and some things on TrainerRoads Facebook page, looks like there will be a decent amount of people that don't have the videos (like myself) that will be doing the tour.  From what I can tell, maybe as high as 25% and it seems that very few people have ALL the videos for the tour.  I'm still up in the air about doing it.  It doesn't start until next Saturday, so I may do another ride tonight, see how the back to back terror feels on my legs, and then make my commitment, or run and hide.

I haven't done any Sufferfest video's in some time (couple of years) but I remember the Downward spiral was a real brutal one when I had it. They are great! (As are Spinervals)

I'm trying to dig myself out of my house at the moment. Despite paying City & County taxes, nobody has thought it was worth coming down my road to clear all this crap. Oh well, off to get the shovel.
