Training question:

Most marathon training programs say to run no more than 20 miles. I did 24 miles 3 weeks before the marathon, and I was REALLY wishing that I had gone further. My training partners and I decided to do 30 miles (super slow, of course!) before the next marathon.

So my question is, what is the max distance that is recommended for triathlon?

I understand what it takes for the sprint distance (for that race I am going to train over the distances), but what about Olympic or HIM?

Mandi,
For the bike just do what works for you. You will be faster with aerobars. This may look a bit different, but you will be faster. As far as the training goes you will find people who argue this both ways. The biggest drawback to the very long runs is that it takes so long to recover that you miss some training. You also put yourself at increased risk for injury. I do like to put in one long run just for my mental peace. Don't be afraid to play around with some different training ideas and see what works for you.

Hi

I’m glad that I tried some change training, did learn a lesson or two. Legs are funny after the ride, don’t go to hard on the bike and remember your helmet. I will attend again Friday. Hopefully with a better result this time.

The lake swim was also a good experience; there were no line on the bottom of the lake. And even if there were, we weren’t able to see it. Open water crawl, looking up, cornering at the buoy, all new things to learn.

Tonight it will be on the trainer, as it’s raining heavily. Will try a long ride.

Regards
Hans

It never goes according to plans!

I had planned for a session on the bike trainer last night, due to heavy rain. The bike was placed in the trainer, the PC turned on and a RLV (Real Life Video) disc was in the DVD drive, all set to go. What about a nice drive round Cape Town, South Africa? A 40 km TT, that did sound like the route for my training. Equipped with 2 bottles of water I got started. After 25 km I had to stop to get more water, I was very warm as we had a thunder storm coming.
Then, at 33,9 km, just as I had finished the hilly part of the route and was looking forward to the flats again – BANG – a lightning struck nearby, and all electricity went off. Well, no more training that night.
Even though the electricity came back in a few minutes, I called the training off, took a shower and went to bed. Better luck next time.

Tonight it’s time to hit the pool again. More drills and more endurance. It’s needed, less than 3 weeks to my first triathlon.

Regards
Hans

It's coming along just fine. I feel I’m getting better and better every time I’m in the pool. Last night I tried my new tri wetsuit. I felt I just glided through the water. Used the suit for the whole session. Our trainer is an old swimmer (not my brother) and he says than I ‘m a quick learner. Well, I have to be, not more than 17 days and counting to my first competition. I still need more endurance, so I will go to the pool 3 times a week. I’m going to try with pads next Monday; the trainer says it would be good to give them a try.

Today I took the bike to work (2 x 25Km) and tomorrow its change training (bike-run) again. This time I hope to perform better. Saturday I go to the pool and Sunday running a short trip.

I have become a member of BT and am looking around at the various training programs. If I survive my first tri, there is a 1/4 Ironman in late august which I will attend. This gives me 10 weeks to maintain/progress my training.

I’m much exited to get my first tri done, but I have no idea what so ever in which time I can expect to finish in, or if I can finish at all. Well, of cause I can finish. I haven’t tried a 1500m swim yet, not even in the pool. I hate hills, especially on the bike. And last time I changed from bike to run, my legs cramped up. But as long as I complete, I’m satisfied. And I always have Steve’s time to follow.

Regards Hans

How is all the training going?

When is everyone's next race?

I have a Father's Day Sprint Tri this weekend.

You guys rock! I'm the only tri-loser here

I've actually decided to stick to triathlon training as a means to cross train for the marathon. I'm not sure when I'll do an actual race...at this point, I'm LOVING the running, and I need to swim and bike to keep from getting injured. I want to tackle another marathon before I try a triathlon. I know that I will attempt a triathlon at some point. I just need to focus on one thing at a time.

I hope that doesn't sound too stupid! I just officially started training for the New York City Marathon, and I'm going to keep that as my immediate goal. Like I said 1,000 posts ago...marathon training keeps me sane!!

Happy training to everyone!

Everything is fine in Denmark. Summer is here! For the last to weeks we have had sun, very little wind and up to 85°F. But now as my first tri is coming up its getting worse again, rain, wind and down to 60°F.

The race is on Sunday, start at 12:15 PM which I think is a good time. Hopefully the weather will behave, at least no rain.

I have increased my training lately and I’m feeling at bit tired sometimes. This week I’ll try to relax and get my focus on the race. Tonight is my last “hard” training in the pool, then only light running and biking until Sunday.

We are four from our tri club attending to this race, the national championship, Olympic distance. Two of these guys did win silver and bronze last week in their age group at the National championship, sprint distance and the last one are selected to represent Denmark at the European championship, Long distance. So I guess that I’ll be last :-) but I’m happy with that and hope to learn a lot from these guys.

Just found out that the oldest contender is 75 years old, but last year he won in 2:39 – I’m in for some hard competition!

Regards
Hans

Thanks Rob

I’m really exited by now. All my equipment is ready, and lined up. I’m going over the transition in my head for the god knows which time.

The weather won’t be as good as I hoped, it will by dry in the morning, but from about noon it will rain for the rest of the day. Temperature won’t be higher than 62°F.

Best of luck to you Steve.

Great posts everyone,

Rob, I hear that course is very beautiful so just have fun.

Hans, you do the same. Make sure the first thing you do is have fun. I'm sure with all the training you've put in that you'll be fine. I can't wait to read your race report.

Mandi, how can anyone who is training for a marathon consider themselves a "loser"? 99% of the population will never even attempt what you've already accomplished. You'll get your tri in when the time is right and it will be worth the wait.

It's about 4:45 am and time for me to start packing up to head to my race today. I haven't swam since my last tri about a month ago. I'm lucky that this is a sprint with only a 400 M pol swim. Yayyyyyy......black lines!!!!

My turn - I'M A TRIATHLETE!

Wind and waves on the swim, lots of rain on the bike, and a little crash, rain again on the run.

But it was great and I'm very happy with my performance today.

30:14 on the swim
3:23 in T1
1:20:30 on the bike
2:23 in T2
52:13 on the run
Finish 2:48:42

The swim and bike was way over what I did expect.

Full race report tomorrow

Best regards
Hans

It was FUN!

How did your race go?

Apparently I wasn’t the only Dane doing an Olympic tri yesterday. Rasmus Henning won Des Moines World Cup and the greatest price ever in triathlon $200.000 (and a Hummer H3)

Hi Rob

61°F in a farmer-john suit? Sounds very cold! It must hast have been a very mentally tough race, I don’t think that I would have finished in such a condition.
I better stick to ¼ ironman and Olympic for now. There is a lot to learn in your report for us newbie’s.

Good your okay again and live to race another day.

Hans that is funny! When I was in transition shivering I thought to myself Hans would love this cold and trains in it, so I sucked it up and kept going.
