Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Thanks everyone for weighing in on the 10 miler discussion. You know me well enough to know that I am pretty conservative so if I think I'm going to injure myself to the point I'm out for tri season I won't risk it. Another idea is to just go with Laura, run somewhere else in the park and then volunteer, that way I don't hurt myself and I get to see Brenda too . After I read the race report and watch the videos Brenda sent me I may just want to stay home though! And Dirk you are just going to have to cancel your vacation LOL!

Vero sorry to hear about your pain and yep it does sound like shin splints Dirk good to hear your pain is going away too Matt loved to spectator report! And did I see somewhere you are racing this weekend? If so Good Luck! Wow warren you did hit the jackpot! Dina sooty I didn't get a chance to chime in on your race, I think you can do it like everyone said with a run/ walk The Spartan run last weekend was soooo much fun the last big obstacle was box jumps, and my legs were done by then so at #6 I wiped out got some pretty good bruises but....I got up and finished all 20 |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dirk glad to hear you are making good progress with your running and you are doing it pain free, that is great news. JoAnne congrats on finishing the Spartan race and glad to hear you enjoyed doing it. I have friends who do those races all the time. One of these days I will attempt to do one. Dina sounds like you are having second thoughts about that ultra relay trail run. Don't let that flooding deter you. If they have that much water on the course you can just bring your wetsuit and swim it. Seriously though it would be great if you decide to do it just to get out there and meet Brenda. Unfortunately it sounds like you will miss Dirk though unless you can convince him to cancel is vacation. Matt good luck tomorrow with your HM, go out there and kill it. I am very confident that you'll get your PR. I'll be heading out early tomorrow morning myself to get another MTN bike ride in. It's about the only thing I can get myself motivated to do lately. I've been doing a lot of reading lately on the aftermath of Ironman and I am totally convinced that I've not recovered from it. I have been concerned since I've been tired even though I am getting 8 to 9 hours of sleep and my training is way down along with my motivation. But after reading blogs from many people who've done there first IM this is all normal in fact they say it takes 6 to 8 weeks to physically recover. Mental recovery takes months. I'm just over 8 weeks and it seems like I did ages ago but that is not the case. I did not expect to be feeling this way but at least I understand why now. Good thing I realize it and am not making the mistake of jumping back in right away. It would be an epic failure. I'm not going to start until sometime in January until then I'm going to try and cut back the training and just do what I enjoy doing. |

Tony I'm glad you are taking the time to read about your IM malaise. I see the question about how long does it take to recover from IM come up all the time in the forums. Enjoy your mountain bike, read books, sleep all of it. Your doing the right thing listening to your body and not pushing it. I tried a longer run yesterday, not even by much just 6.7 miles. It was on the trail and the verdict is a definite NO for the trail run. First off, that was really hard HA. It is a difficult time on the trails right now with all the fresh fallen leaves, hickory nuts and all that. I could not get good footing, just kind of shuffled along kicking the leaves out of my way trying not to slip. But besides that, this morning that cyst I have had for so long is really really sore and last night I had an area in my groin that flared up. I think it is related to some strength training work I did earlier in the week and not a big deal but I don't think adding a bunch of long runs will help it go away! The good news is I posted in TriTalk about my running earlier in the week and got some really good links for some stretches and mobility exercises to help my hip flexors. I've done them a few times this week and already my hips feel dramatically better. So I'll take the good with the bad and keep plugging along

Veteran 498 Redding, CA | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Had the shin splints affect my running today. After taking Thursday and Friday off I had planned an easy 5 miles today and I had to quit half way. The pain was probably intensified because I've managed to bruise a rib again while working out with a couple of partners in Kung Fu class the other night. I think I'll be taking a couple of days off from training to let things heal up some more. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dina that decision was pretty quick lol. I hear you on the trail running and you're right with all the leaves and pine needles falling lately is makes for tough footing and hiding some of the obstructions. It's the same for MTN biking on the trails I've been riding. Maybe you can find a race with a shorter distance that you can run in closer to home. I also hope that the cyst calms down for you and that those stretches continue to help you. Vero sorry to hear about the shin splints affecting your run training. I think you are doing the right thing by taking some time off and giving your legs a rest. Hopefully that will help so you can get back to running soon. I got another MTN ride in this morning with a two groups. It's funny I'm too slow for the lead group and I was too fast for the group I was leading today lol so I was in between riding solo. The group I was riding with let me go 5.5 miles into the 12 mile ride so I went off and bombed the uphills and downhills for the next 6.5 miles. I am definitely improving, had a good ride and a lot of fun today. It was freakin cold out there this morning too. I am going to try and get back out there tomorrow morning. I brought the point about being tired today when I went MTN biking this morning and the whole aftermath thing and my friend Wynn made an interesting point. He said having been through it a few times his observation is that it is the same fatigue and tiredness you felt when you were training for the IM. He said that you wind up being so focused on everything else that you don't realize it's there until it's over. Without the focus on the training you now notice things that you probably didn't when you were locked into the training. I never thought about it that way. Maybe having more time and less drive and focus just makes it more noticeable. Speaking of trail running I may sign up for a half marathon trail run for May. I am debating whether or not to do it. I would like to do it, I think it would be fun and a great training run for the next IM. I'm gonna see if I can get some more people interested before I jump in and do it. |

In regards to my logs I believe every entry I made began with how tired I was lol. That has not changed. Instead of blaming it on IM training I can blame it on lack of sunlight! Here's a link to a really good article on what the body goes through during an Ironman. I though this was a great article and really puts into perspective what you're body actually goes through during any of these long distance endurance races. http://triathlete-europe.competitor.com/2011/10/06/the-physiologica... |

Extreme Veteran 1123 Sidney, Ohio | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED 1st, thank you to everyone for the well wishes this morning, it really made my day seeing all the support So today's HM: 1:52! I know super slow right, I'm not sure what happend. My goal was to be under 1:44 and hoped to be close to 1:40 but as you can see that didn't workout! A few things that I know went wrong, 1. 1st mile was way too fast, 7:05! Wind was at my back and it felt easy my heart rate showed otherwise though, it was above 170. 2. Heart rate sky rocketed and never came down, I slowed my pace after the 1st mile down to target of 7:40 for the next 2 miles and it still stayed above 170. I kept slowing down but my heart rate was not following.3. Decided that at mile 4 when my heart rate was still not dropping that I would just hang on for as long as I could! This lasted until mile 11 when the wheels fell off. But I am impressed that I managed to average 172 for over 11 miles, that is 94% of my max heart rate so today was definitely not a lack of effort! Now if I could only understand why my speed at this effort was so slow. Normally this is a 7:15 effort not the 8:30 average I finished with!4. Lastly, someone turned on the super fan! The wind was somewhere between 20-25mph for about 7 miles. Overall it was a great race and even though I didn't reach my goal I had a good time, plus there was ham and soup beans with draft beer at the finish! How could that not be a good time! |

Matt congrats on finishing the HM today. I think that you had a great effort and I'm impressed that you were able to push so hard for so long. I think I would have passed out at around mile 6 if my HR was that high for that long. It also sounds like the wind was a big factor today and that will always slow you down if you have to run into it. I'm sorry to didn't hit your time goal but you're right it certainly wasn't for lack of effort and I'm sure you'll hit it the next time around. I'm also glad to hear despite not hitting your time goal you had a great time. I'd have to agree the world is good if there is hot soup and draft beer is available after any November race lol! |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Although I totally understand not doing the HUFF, it's still a bummer, DINA. Cyst, groin, hip flexor issues - are you getting old or what??? Glad you found some exercises that seem to help. VERO - It's smart to take time of when your body is telling you to do so. Bruised ribs from Kung Fu class? I think all us Junkies are falling apart. Be careful out there! Sorry about you not getting that PR, MATT, but to go that hard for that long is a huge accomplishment. No hanging your head! The wind was fierce in my neck of the woods yesterday, too, so I know what you were dealing with. Congratulations on pushing through to the end! Since you don't seem to stop, what's up next? JOANNE - congrats on finishing the Spartan race! It's brought a smile on my face to see all the Bon Jovi pictures on FB with you and Amanda. What a fun memory! You look great, BTW! TONY - Even with the lack of motivation for tri training, you're still getting out there doing SOMETHING. It's great that you're enjoying the trails on your mtn bike. You definitely should do a trail run. It's food for my soul to get out there and I have no doubt you'll love it. Enjoy your bike ride in the woods today - no going head first into a tree, please. WILL - with Tony's talk of post-IM-training I wondered how you've been feeling? Glad to hear you're getting some runs in, pain-free, DIRK. I know you've been working hard at your real, paying job and aren't as active in training as you'd like, but relax in knowing you have a huge base built and the downtime is good for your body. I plan on working on my swimming these next weeks. I bought the Swim Secret books that are recommended on BT and saw a book club topic on them in the Challenge forum. All the swim lessons I've had in the past have been geared to what my body looks and does on top of the water with no real guidance on the catch and pull. These books address that so I'm really looking forward to learning what I've been missing. Maybe, just maybe, I can drop a little time so as not push my IM swim to the edge of the cut off. Hope the rest of you JUNKIES are all at a happy place. Have a Blessed Sunday!

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED JoAnne I can't argue with you or Brenda on that. I probably should be doing less and I've been trying to do that. The MTN biking has been a definitely been a nice way for me to do that and have some fun. You are right though now is the time to get rested because once the training for Ironman starts it won't end until the race is done in August. It's a tiring undertaking as you already know. I got out for another MTN ride this morning and I did well. I had my best overall ride time wise completing the 12 miles in 1:27. I did really well the first 9 miles. I was carrying my speed and doing well on the climbs. I think after mile 9 I was getting tired so my handling started to fall off which is a bad thing when MTN biking. I had some trouble with a few climbs and I did clip a few trees with my handle bars the second time was a little harder and I almost went off the bike. Sorry Brenda I wish I would have read your post before I went out there. That got my attention and I did better when I headed back off the loop and onto the stick. It's a 2 mile stick out, 8 mile loop and then 2 miles back on the stick. I'm definitely getting better, having fun doing it and I get a serious workout. I have to be honest the hills here are no joke, the rides here are defintiely going to help me when I get back to riding on the road. |

Extreme Veteran 1123 Sidney, Ohio | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Tony, you make me want to go buy a mtn bike, sounds like a lot of fun. Of course for it to be of any use though I would probably have drive 2 hours away to jsut find a resemblance of a dirt trail. Brenda, I think you are right I always do have something "next"! Sara gives me hard time about and tells me I should do an Asics commercial because as soon as I finish one race I am talking about the NEXT race. I think it annoys here sometimes actually. But to answer your questions on what is next, that is a secret. I have a meeting on Tuesday where depending on the outcome will help me decide what is next. In the short term though, I am going to swim |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Thanks all for the pity party ha ha ha . I'm doing much better. Just a combo of adding strength training and longer run than usual in the same week. Sometimes I think I need more rest days too. I go on these streaks with no days off but a lot of my workouts are short so I just keep going. If I ever hired a coach it would just be to save me from myself. But then I hear about people running marathons, 50 ks, IronMan etc. and it doesn't seem like I'm doing all that much at all!

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Matt, I would gladly take that time for a HM... ha! Sounds like you burned a lot of matches that first mile... I wonder how you would have done had you started out at a slower pace. But again, that's a great time to me. Congrats brother! As for how I am feeling post IM... it has been interesting. During my race, my calculation was off and I didn't think I would get under 14 hours... had I known how well I was doing, I probably would have tried to push it a lot more the last half of the run and tried to get down close to 13 hours. Since I didn't go all out, I think I finished the race with some gas left in the tank. I will say this is a much more preferable option than running out of gas before the finish line... There's probably a very small window to get it just right. Overall I was very pleased with my execution. And I didn't want to finish totally wasted... mainly because we were leaving the next day for 2 weeks of family time in another part of NC and I was driving since my wife is scared to drive my truck (and I do fear for my life when she is behind the wheel). There are always people at the finish that cant even walk or that need medical attention and I didn't want to be one of them (had I pushed it the second half of the run, I probably would have been... ha). Basically, my legs were sore for a couple days following the race. Mostly just my quads. I also still have rash on my neck and sides from my wetsuit. By the third day after, I was carrying my little girl up mountains as we were hiking a few of my fav trails in NC. So, I recovered very nicely. As for WO's. Because 2.5 weeks of family time followed my race, I haven't done much... a couple 45 min rides on the trainer, one 30 min swim and one 5K... ha. All felt fine. Looking forward, I probably really need to get a race on the calendar... otherwise I'm afraid I wont be motivated to keep the fitness up. My short term plan for now is to start up some core training (with weights), something I have never done. And then I would also like to get in a couple bikes and one swim and one run each week. |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by mambos 1st, thank you to everyone for the well wishes this morning, it really made my day seeing all the support So today's HM: 1:52! Another good race regardless of missing your PR/goals. The way you have been attacking your running over the past years getting to where you want to go isn't to far off in the distance.
Related to this race and the other HM this year, do you think you've miscalculated your HR zones? The past couple of race it seems you've had high HR spikes and it is removing your chances to PR before you ever really have the chance to get dialed in to your pace/effort. I am thinking about what causes there may be for these spike and hopefully we can figure out what seems to be happening. Of course this question is moot if you are trying to see if you can blast through a race and see if you can survive. I also believe Will is getting pretty close when he mentioned the first mile burning matches. If nothing else, you need to hold yourself back for the first mile or two before letting it all out.

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I have had enough work over the past couple of weeks to keep me away from most anything I have wanted to do. The OT is nice, especially this time of year, but it's getting really old. My average work week has been just over 50 hours for about 2 and a half months with a couple of 70+ hour work weeks. I also have to work the day after Thanksgiving for another customer outage, so that's destroying plans to go back to Ohio to see family over the long weekend. Oh well, the OT is almost done and it'll be back to normal for a while..............until storm season begins in March-ish. I also believe this is my last week for PT. And that is somewhat exciting. The way my knee feels I could probably go either way with going or not going again. There is still some minor pains but it's somewhat insignificant most of the time. There really isn't a lot of pain when running but when it occurs it causes me to limp for a few steps until I can get things straightened out. I have been wanting to stretch my intervals out slightly but I haven't had the time or the will. Last night I rode the trainer for an hour after working 11.5 hours but had to fight with Dish to get my TV working properly so I would have entertainment while blowing my mind and legs. That took 45 minutes and I wasn't on the trainer until 6:30 and I hadn't eaten, so by the time I was done with the ride I was starving like a hostage and the thought of stretching anything was not going to work well for me. However, things are coming along. More slowly than I would like, but they're coming along. |

Extreme Veteran 1123 Sidney, Ohio | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I did 2 things today that I have not done in 2 months, I went swimming and I stepped onto a scale! And I think that I will blame the slow swim time on the fact that I have gained 10lbs! Guess it's time to end the off season! |

Expert 1439 Tallahassee | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Well I'm finally back, off to take my son to the dentist right now but will try to read post over this past week. Matt, hey you didn't meet your goal but that is motivation to work for next time. the wind hurt you and the 10 lbs didn't help but it is still a fast time. The first mile was fast but did you warm up prior to the race? I'm still from the old school but i think all the electronics can cause negative thoughts. I wonder if you let your heart rate, get into your head? Dirk, glad you are getting better, it may be slow but remember the tortoise and the haire. Talking about weight and health, ya'll might want to read/watch "The Beautifu Truth", "Forks over Knives" and the Gerson Miracle. These are vegan books so to speak and i'm not vegan but I am cutting bad food such as bread, pasta, cookies and eating more veggies, fruit and stuff. I feel so much better. I'll be back soon. |
