Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Hi SHANNON - Welcome!! This is Brenda, Dirk's friend that met you at the Winona tri and saw you run the Half on Saturday. Yes, I'd say you found the right place. I'll let Dirk do the introduction to who you are but wanted to jump in and welcome you to the most awesome group that's ever been assembled of helpful and friendly folks who swim, bike and run. BTW - Congratulations on completing a very windy 13.1! Great job! |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Matt don't feel bad I've had my share of meals like that as well but I've been trying to get enough exercise in to counteract some of the effects of all that food. If those are Boston Market Brownie's you have to get a pass on those. I mean c'mon who is not going to not have one of those! |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by dcdoc Hey Dirk, its Shannon! I hope this is the place you told me to go! This is the right place Shannon. To all the fellow group members I suggested Shannon begin to post in the group. I know this isn't the "normal" protocol for beginning new members and a new session but He will be beginning his quest toward a HIM in the next couple of years with goals for a couple of Oly's in 2013. I told him to go ahead and jump into the group and we'd get him kicked off on the right foot. I'll allow him to post his own bio, but the short is: If you need some ART or chiro he can hook you up. He is one of the people responsible for getting me to Boston this year. .........Time for a bike ride after 3 hours of sleep after working until 3:30 AM this morning on an outage to a few small towns in Ohio. I'll pay for this foolishness later.........and so will my family too, I suppose. |

Spoken like a true Ironman! LOL. That's the only thing I am missing about all that training. You can eat whatever you wanted to and not gain any weight. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dirk be safe and have a great ride today. Shannon welcome aboard, you definitely came to the right place. This a pretty awesome group of people. You'll get pleny of help and support on your journey towards completing your HIM. Dirk did the right thing by bringing you on board now and not waiting until the groups open back up. Edited by strikyr 2013-11-12 8:15 AM |

Veteran 498 Redding, CA | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Shannon, welcome to the Junkies! Dirk, get some sleep man! Matt, Great job on the HM. I would take a 1:52 any day over my 2:07 PR. I do hope to improve mine by running it again in May. I wish I could blame catered lunches on my weight gain, but it has just been bad eating for me. On the good side though I have gone from a 3 to 4 soda a day habbit to about 2 or 3 sodas a week. So hopefully that will help get my weight back down (if I can keep from eating cookies to make up the calorie defecit)
So my shins have been stretched and iced repeatedly for the last few days. I am not feeling that achiness in them during the days like before. I have not run or done any workouts since Saturday morning's disaster of a run. I'm planning on at least another day or two off and then try some short runs later in the week. The rib injury is still nagging at me also. I really enjoy the Kung Fu training and I'm slowly working my way up in rank at the school. I'd like to stick with it and reach black belt rank in the next few years, but this is the second year in a row that a rib injury from Kung Fu might stop me from running in the local Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. The setbacks in my swim/bike/run training are starting to make me question the wisdom of doing both at the same time. I've already decided to drop Kung Fu classes for the 3 month leading up to the HIM next summer to avoid something similar happening during training for that. Anyway I guess it's not really a question for anyone just more of an sharing my uncertainty with friends. |

Expert 1439 Tallahassee | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Vero, how are the shins? i went thru that a couple of years ago. It shut me down completely. Stretch, ice and do lots of toe raises. Start back easy. If you want to know waht I did, i can send you a pm, may or may not work for you. Ok folks, I went for a run today at 4:00, it was 39 degrees and windy. I admire my northern friends so much. I can't imagine having to go out in the cold every day. I made myself go and about froze. If I had to run in the cold, I'd quit. My hat is off to all of ya'll...GREAT job! Ya'll are tougher than me. Quick run question, when I run down long hills, my knee hurts a little, I know I am heel landing because I can feel it and i feel the jarring. Any advice, I know I've asked tnhis before but I'm really struggling w/ this and we don't have big hills here. Remember I'm from the south and it may take several atempts for what ya'll say to soak in, so I may ask more... |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Vero glad to hear that you are feeling a little better. I agree with Karl take it slow when you start back up with your running and keep doing what you've been doing. I would have to agree as with you on maybe shutting down the Kung Fu during your training for the HIM and hope your ribs are feeling better. Karl 39 degrees is warm lol. I think I must be getting old because in the past I really enjoyed running in the colder weather. I've not done much outdoor running lately but these past two days have been very cold here and I'm not dealing with the cold too well. I was freezing when I took my dog out for her walks yesterday. I am hoping to get some more outdoor runs in with the time I'll have off this month and in December so we'll see how that goes. I also need to get a good pair of gloves for running. I know we talked about this last year but my hands get so cold. I even wore two pairs of gloves on the colder days and my hands were still freezing. Karl I'm not sure how to advise on the downhills. I am a mid to front foot striker and my strides are pretty short. I usually lengthen my stride and speed up some on the downhills and I try not to heel strike. I'm sure the runners here can better advise you on how to do it and what might be causing you the knee pain. So I've got my two 10K's coming up this weekend and I am thinking that I just my run them for fun and not worry about my time. My legs are still pretty heavy from this past weekend's MTN bike rides and I would like to get a ride or two in this weekend even with the 10K's so I may just take it easy. The weather is supposed to be in the 50's and near 60 on Sunday. I was hoping to sneak a ride in on Sunday afternoon but now they are talking rain so I'll have to wait and see but sounds like it will be warm for the two races. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Karl I am ready to move to Florida - we are getting our first round of real cold here and I don't like it! If it is just cold but still sunny that is not too bad but factor in the cold with 15 mile per hour breeze we always have and yuck. I'll be on the treadmill today. Actually I'm having a hard time doing anything but sitting under this blanket today. I also need to clean up my eating habits. I've been having a bowl of chocolate ice cream topped with peanut butter every night this week and last week it was Halloween candy every night. At least it is natural peanut butter so that makes it healthy right? |

Between the seasonal Blue Moon beers (those things are awesome!), the Halloween candy, the baked goods and the ice cream I should be up 20 pounds. I don't see it getting any better with the holidays right around the corner. |

Stupid blueberries with plain greek yogurt drizzled with a little honey and a date for my sweets today. I even managed to dip out chocolate ice cream for my kids without even licking the spoon! I'll probably also go buy some dark chocolate squares for when I think I want candy. |

I am cold sitting in my house with flannel robe and blanket on right now! Acclimation is not happening very quickly for me. Or course I am icing my groin with a bag of frozen peas so that might be part of my problem.

Remember I'm from the south and it may take several atempts for what ya'll say to soak in, so I may ask more... Where is the pain located in you knee? I know from your weight lifting history you're not likely to have strength or muscular imbalance issues. What kind of mileage is on your shoes and/or have you changed to a different brand or model of shoe recently? I glanced though your logs briefly and noticed some of your longer runs had been getting up in the HM distance and slightly longer. But what seemed to stick out to me was the difference between your moderate distances and long run distance. This isn't something that I believe is very likely to be causing issues now, since you've not run anything in that range for a couple of weeks. However, it is a point to consider that you should ideally have at least one run at half the distance of your long run during a given week. |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED The discussion of the cold can hold off as well as the cold itself! I figure if we don't talk about it for a while it just won't get cold. I haven't been out in the cold for long periods, other than at work, but the recent snap here brought a chill to my bones during a run recently. I was happy I only ran about 1.5 miles and was able to get back in the door quickly. Once I get acclimated I'll be alright with the cold and things will get back to normal. On another personal note: I graduate from PT tonight! My therapist and I discussed my progress on Monday night and he feels I am coming along alright. Running can increase in slow increments and I need to continue some of my strength training exercises for 4-6 weeks after tonight. I can tell things are working out, albeit slowly, but they are getting closer. The other night I was able to run .5 mile intervals and felt as if I could run further without compromising my form too much. That said, I will not be doing that! I have planned to run these short intervals in 2 week increments unless things become blatantly obvious that I can stretch them further, sooner. At this point I should be back to 15+ MPW by January and that is an exciting notion for me. |

Expert 1439 Tallahassee | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dirk, congrats on graduation... I hope things continually improve. Tony, good luck on the 2 10K's, I sure hope it is warm for you! Dina, congrats on cutting sweets! I rode the trainer for an hour in the garage and worked up a sweat, tried doing a run afterwards and it was just to cold, feet went numb within minutes, ears froze and my nose...won't even go there, so I just made it 1 mile. Dirk to answer your questions, it hurts right where the IT band hurt when I was having those issues, not bad but I'm trying to ward off any future issues. It only hurts when i run down hill and I feel my heel hitting. When I run on level ground I hit midfoot. Should i shorten my stride, increase my stride when going down a hill. Yes I need more medium runs, right now it is just a time issue.. I'll work on it and figure something out. It is about time to change shoes too |

I can't help it I have lost all my discipline. The good thing is I've been able to keep my weight down but I definitely need to cut out all the junk food because I'm definitely not doing enough training to keep that up. Matt I get cold just looking at you in those photos. It is actaully getting warmer here today and we will be near 60 on the weekend. I'm not sure how long it will last but I'll take it. Dirk I'm glad to hear that you are done with PT and the you are smartly progressing with your recovery and your training. I'm also happy to hear that your back running and not having any issues. I think you'll be good to go in no time. |

Someone just walked in my office and dropped a bag of donut holes on my desk and walked off... at 10:30am... grabbed the bag to chunk them in the trash and noticed that they were still warm... had to eat them. And the 2 major holidays are about to hit us! |
