My ride today was miserable. Hot and HUMID for us made for a bad combo. 29 miles took me 2hr 6min.

And my rt knee is still bugging me. I'm sure it's ITB stuff and I just need more rolling and such. But it's no fun. I just want to be able to make it through the race on the 31st, then be able to get better for Hotter 'n Hell at the end of August.

Does your knee hurt when you bike or only when you're walking / running?

Started 2 weeks back when running. But I feel it a bit when biking now.

Where's the pain located?  Is it on the top/bottom of your knee or on the outside of the knee?

Have you had your bike fit?

Yesterday, it was rit knee, top inside half. When running it was more top outside half.

Bike was set up off of my specs from my previous bike, which I was fit by the shop (not one of the $200 fits, but he spent about an hour going through the fitting and re-checking things).

How long ago was the fit?  If your riding position has changed at all you may have shifted some load to your knees that doesn't need to be there.  Pain on the outside of the knee always scares me because that tends to be a sign of ITBS.  May want to get your fit looked at and see a sports med doc.  I'm also a little jumpy about knees at this point due to my previous issues.

Got to swim in Galveston this weekend.  The currents were STRONG, but I got a good Oly to HIM distance swim in.  Also hit the pool this morning and something finally clicked.  I let my head release naturally instead of fighting the urge to keep my eyes forward and it brought my hips up.  Everything felt so much easier after that.  Now to make the feeling of breathing to the left more natural.

I am curious if there is a direct correlation with HR and diet or is it pure fitness?  My HR has come down significantly since I started this sport back in Late January.  But it does seem anytime I may fall slightly off track with diet, and it includes "junk food", the following morning, or next time I get out, HR seems to be higher?  I am pretty good with only eating healthy foods, but occasionally that bag of oreos attacks me.

An example would be me being on vacation last week, and falling into eating out often, the occassional ice cream etc here and there.  HR was higher than usual yesterday (although I was pushing it a bit to see where I am at with pace etc), but it was also higher this morning on my 6 mile run.  Maybe I am reading into it too much?

My opinion is that if you fuel poorly it takes greater effort to perform the same task that if you were to be taking in quality foods.  This is just something I notice as someone who has the occasional lapse in judgement food wise such as this past weekend.

It seems strange that the IT band would be the cause of pain on the inside of your knee.  Having had an MCL tear, I'm wondering if you may have an MCL issue on the inside of your knee.  Have there's been any trauma (e.g. twisting) to that knee?

My thought (and its only a thought) is that when you eat sugar and carbs your body needs to retain more water to process them -- that's why a lot of people "gain" weight quickly when they eat lots of carbs, when in reality they're retaining water.  Any chance you're carrying around a few extra pounds of water weight this morning.  Those few extra pounds would cause you to have a higher HR for the same pace (especially when running), but would go away pretty quickly once you get back to your normal eating habits.

This is very true.  I know I look bloated this morning from my weekend carb binge.

I felt a little bloated yesterday, but not so much today.  I am only 1 pound over what I was when I left for vacation, and after my run this morning, I was below that.  I'll keep an eye on it.  I asked the question, because last time I did this, I noticed a jump in HR.  And after a day or two, it was back to normal.

Thanks for that pic, Kelly. I've been struggling to find something concrete on the web like that. I'm sure the running is IT band related and today it felt better. I've been rolling every evening for about 10 minutes and it's seemed to help.

The inner is more muscular I think (and felt fine today). Actually today I got a little bit below the knee on the inner quarter of the leg.

I have no doubt my knees are not great. Many years of ice hockey goalie, plus multiple other sports = bad everything. My knees pop all the time, and a twist of the knee inward, with my foot firmly planted, usually relieves the pressure.

Jeff (rizer) - Nice mock tri times.  You ought to do really well in your first race!

Carrie - Cool pics!

Kelly - Your site looks great.  Personally, I prefer a darker background color, so the words pop, but that's just me.  I'll look at it again later to see if there's anything else that sticks out.  Good job!  How long have you been RD for a 1/4 marathon?  That's so cool!

I was on the trainer early this morning and then slipped in a quick 1550 in the pool while Madge had her swim lesson.  I put the 2 younger boys in the playroom and was concerned that my youngest would freak out.  They held it together though, and I'm happy I got the workout in earlier rather than later (even if it was shorter than I'd planned on swimming today).

I am supposed to do a 3 hr. bike tomorrow, but I don't have time to do it all in one block.  Would it be productive to split it up.  1 hour early in the morning on the trainer and then 2 hours outside with hills and stuff.  Does it matter (as long as I get the bike time in)?

I've been trying to eat as many raw foods as possible.  So, a few days ago I cut corn off the cob and added it to a raw bean, veggie, and corn salad.  My stomach has been so messed up since I ate that salad.  Cook the corn before you eat it, people

Raw corn is fine, it doesnt tast that good - but all of that nonsoluable fiber is the issue.  Corn, beans and veg?  You probably had like 2 weeks worth of fiber, musch of it insoluable so it just goes through you.

LOL...all of my meals are that way.  I probably eat 10 x the fiber a person ought to have in any given day.  Lunch today was 6 cups of raw spinach, carrots, a whole red pepper, handful of grape tomatoes, pea pods, 1 cup kidney beans, sunflower seeds, and 1/2 cup of hummus.

Maybe that's why I have GI distress all the timeEmbarassed

If you really do have GI distress, that could be a culprit.  As we all know: more does not mean better.  However, if you always eat that way eventually you should be okay, if not, listen to your body and tweak your diet.  Otherwise HTFU

How about a veggie burger?  That's what we're having tonight - homemade patties with cracked wheat, pinto beans, veggies, etc.  Sides of broc and watermelon.  Yummy

My husband said he's 30 lbs. lighter than he would be if he weren't married to me, and my kids just don't know any better yet.  LOL...They don't know that I was a vegetarian for nearly a decade, and that's why their lives are filled with beans, tofu, and weird vegetables.  Poor things.  They'll leave my house and hit up every fast food joint they can find.  Haha!

No, seriously, I love burgers and ribs.  They have to taste REALLY good though, or I'm not wasting my time.  No McDonald's pathetic, nasty little burger for me.  I want a big, juicy, homemade patty on the grill - one that has been seasoned properly, too.

No, seriously, I love burgers and ribs.  They have to taste REALLY good though, or I'm not wasting my time.  No McDonald's pathetic, nasty little burger for me.  I want a big, juicy, homemade patty on the grill - one that has been seasoned properly, too.

You come see Jeff and I  in CT and i will make ya some ribs!!!!!

but you better be prepared to drink some alot of beer also

yeah, you need to eat cheeseburgers, drink beer and follow it up with oreo's and milk or toasted marshmallows, then you would have an iron stomach like Jeff and I...

or a big one at the least!!!  HA!!!!

Are you challenging me?  Haha!  If I'm in the area, then you two will be getting a call.

And, yes, I'll drink some beer.  One always turns into 8 for me though, so be prepared!

and swine, lots of swine

....one of the best races i have had was the New Haven Road Race last year, my night-before-race-dinner: pulled pork sandwich, ear of corn, pasta salad and 2 beers.

Worst swim I ever had was when my buddy convinced me to eat Waffle House before a race.  Burping bacon 250m in is no bueno.

Wa Ho grilled cheese and pickles at 4 a.m.

I miss Atlanta.
