depending on the rest/effort level 5x5min can be a brutal workout, and one my athletes tend to hate me for.

If you need ideas for more brutal trainer workouts, Jorges winter training plan has lots and are usually about an hour long.

I had a plan to follow some of Jorges workouts but I got a bit lazy and didn't want to follow the thread.  I know I should check into it and probably will do so.  If I had seen this post a little while ago I would have checked in on some of it.

Instead I was planning my next swim workout, which starts in about 30 minutes.  I am going to focus on some drilling in my swims for a while.  I have a few I found on  http://www.goswim.tv/ that I am planning on using tonight.  I hope to get a bit better at my technique this winter and see if my swim times improve for next season.

Thanks guys.

I'm finally starting to get really nervous.  Weather looks like it should not be terrible, as it probably will rain...but it also has the chance to be awesome.  The storm system that has been passing through has dumped a ton of rain, but it has also been really cool and overcast the past 4 days.  So if the rain is minimal...the temperature should be ideal.

best of luck, should be a good time!

I'm starting to get excited for my race tomorrow, much shorter though, a 5k that i raced last year. Should be a fun time and hopefully a PR for this course. VERY hilly and lots of turns, my kind of race.
And the single best part about this one, it does not start until 3pm!!:-)

Good luck J!

Most of us will have our morning workouts in and have eatin lunch before you start your race.  Just sayin' haha

I already have a 5 mile run in this morning.  Snow on the ground and a cold breeze.  It was actually fairly nice to run in today.

If you guys want to know what the wall is like...I'm talking about the real WALL...then read my race report to come.

I came really close to a DNF and an ambulance ride...at MILE 25...and I was running all the way up to that point.  It hit me suddenly, and couldn't even walk without holding on to something to avoid falling on my face.

Volunteers were awesome and fed me anything and everything they could grab as I was literally lying down on the side of the road.  Finally felt better after about 20 minutes and walked the last mile in with an escort.

Definately a learning experience.  But I finished in good spirits in about 4:36.  I was on pace to finish around 3:57 up to that point.

Nice job regardless.

I got sent off course with 14 other people today. Fun races all around!

Glad you are ok. Get some food in you for the next day or two and keep up with the fluid.

Once you feel better slowly get back to it, and take away what you've learned and keep pushing forward.

Sounds like it got kinda scary for you.  I'm glad you're okay.  I am glad I didn't have all that to go through for my marathon.  But I like how you put it all out there.  Sounds like a hard core effort.

Yeah...I can't describe the feeling.  I was totally coherant...answering questions and telling the volunteers how I felt.  I could think straight and was already trying to figure out how I would get home if I couldn't drive, who I would call, etc, etc.  My legs wanted to finish, my mind wanted to finish...but I just couldn't.  I don't think I ever felt so physically helpless.

You hear stories of how people collapse 100 yards from the finish.  And you think to yourself how it could happen.  How you can't just will your body to go such a short distance.  I totally get it now.

I'm just glad I was able to recover and finish.  I suppose if I tried to push through it for another couple of minutes I may have gone past the point of no return.

Not sure if anyone else has any races left on the schedule this year, but I'm guessing not.

I just wanted to take some time to thank everyone for the last 8ish months for the constant advice and support.  This was my first full year of training and racing, and have learned a lot about the sport and myself in no small part to you folks.

Happy Holidays everyone...and hoping to follow your progress in 2011.

Thanks again and Aloha,

Jason

5 GU roctanes.  One before, and one every 5 miles (or about every 45 minutes).  I was also taking in a little bit of gatorate the last 8 miles.  It's pretty much what I did for long runs...and my long runs have always felt good...where I almost always negative split.  Which is why I didn't feel the need for additional nutrition or electrolytes.

But...given the weather...I should have started out slower, taken maybe one more gel, a couple of salt tabs...and sipped some gatorade from the start.  Pacing was the bigger issue.

My 10k split was 51:57, and my half marathon split was 1:53:14.  So I did go out too fast...even shooting for 3:50.  My guess is that the weather gave me a shot at 3:55 at best...so you could say I did the first half about 9 minutes too fast.

The most important lesson I learned is that it's not all about your training.  I never felt more confident about my training going into a race than I did for this race.  But sometimes the day is just not set up for you to really show off your training with a great time.  You need to make adjustments to the day, and you need to have a plan B and C if things go wrong early...and don't be afraid to go to plan B before it's too late.  I should have went to plan B at the starting line.

I really appreciate everyones willingness to listen and provide advice.  I have learned so much over the course of this mentor program.  I am definately looking forward to the next year.  My goals for the next season is 1/2 marathon and at least 1 olympic race w/ a few sprint distances thrown in.  This time last year I would have thought I was crazy as I could barely run a mile without stopping. I most likely would have quit last year without this group and I can only hope that my next mentor group is just as supportive. THANKS EVERYONE!

So my plan to up my run mileage last week was sabotaged by a cold.  I could barely get off the couch much less consider running.  I am starting to feel better and ran 30 minutes today w/o too much troubles.  The throat lozanges helped!  Plan on running longer tomorrow and 2 more times later in the week. Then off to OK to visit relatives - I should have time to run over the duration if the couch doesn't suck me in!

A year ago, I couldn't run for more than a few minutes, did not own a bike & hadn't riden one in years, dog paddled across the pool, and was about 30 lbs heavier. Back in March, I was just hoping I could finish a sprint tri...I never would have guessed that I would do an OLY & HM before the year's end. So, yes, I would also agree that this group has helped me tremendously. It pushed me to try that much harder and believe that I could do it. I will be very sad to leave this group. Please keep in touch. I want to see what you all do next year. Thanks again.

x4.  This group has been great.   The fact that we're on page 128 says a lot.   I've learned a lot from all of you and appreciate the time that everyone put into making this a great mentor group .  Of course, an extra special thanks go to Newbz for hosting and sharing his knowledge and experience with us.    Kinda sounds like we're wrapping things up.   Just a thought - anyone that is interested in staying in touch could drop back into this thread once at the end of every month.

I plan to stay active as long as the group will.  Or if there is another group that starts up for winter, I would most definately rejoin.

Did 30 minutes of small chain spinning on the trainer yesterday, along with about 2000 yards in the pool.

Jumped back on the trainer this morning, and my legs felt a little more fatigued then yesterday...but less sore...if that makes sense.  It felt like I was actually "working" instead of letting the blood flow...so I jumped off after a short 15 minutes.  I'll probably try to walk on the treadmill after work.
