KWin - 2010-04-15 8:38 AM OK everyone, when are you gonna do your first open-water swim of the season? And if you live in Florida, California, or Hawaii, you don't count! I'm talking to all of you who live where there is winter and your local open water is COLD. Tell me where you plan to do your first open-water swim and what the water is like.

I'll go first--I live in a town on Long Island that is surrounded by salt water. Long Island Sound on one side, huge bay on the other. The Sound is more fun because sometimes it has waves. Current water temperature is in the high 40s/low 50s. BRRR!

I'm hoping to do my first open-water swim in early May when hopefully the water will be about 55.

Hey, I never realized you are from Long Island.  I live on the north shore in Wading River.  Charlie (thelunchbox) is the next town over in Shoreham.  We are going to swim Saturday morning, May 8th, at Cedar Beach.  Check out our thread in the NY Forum.  The water should be a balmy 55 degrees by then. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND a neoprene cap.

I'm sure not one of them! Unless there is a massive storm and they cancel the run part of the race!

Papson, salty noodles and tea during a race sounds awesome. I love Japanese food. I thought about having a thermos of miso soup waiting for me after the Ironman--I lose so much salt during races that I have actually had to stop on the way home, go into a fast-food place, and get salt packets to eat... (This was before I discovered Endurolytes.) Sushi after a race is the BEST.

I've done 50k runs where they had boiled potatoes that you dipped in salt and ate during the run. Fabulous! And I did have a thermos of strong iced tea about 3/4 of the way through one, and it was rocket fuel. Maybe they are onto something in Japan...

LOL, that is funny! I'm right there with you

I did my first last season in the Hudson River, late May when the water was about 55 and it was fine for me. I like cold water. I was actually in a sleeveless! I'm really aiming to get out by early May, somewhere on Long Island I'm guessing. Can't wait, I H A T E the pool. Hate it.

I had a random question. People have already been asking me my bib #. Do you know when they announce any of that info? Or is it just at the packet pick-up?

"The final list with USAT age will be available when bib numbers are assigned approximately 2 weeks prior to race day."

I lifted that quote right off the IMLP website.

First weekend in May in S. Jersey lake. Usually just under 60 unless we get a wicked warm spell. Nice thing is it warms up by the end of May to around 67 so it is not so bad.

I love my lbs.  I don't know what it's called, I just know how to get there.  Anyway, I just had my cassette changed, bike cleaned, and a full tune up for 4000 yen, about $40.  Komesu doesn't speak any english and there are no reciepts or slips of any kind.  You just drop it off and pick it up a few hours later.  Komesu refuses to let you take your own bike off the rack or put it back on your car.   He also cleaned my old cassette and put it in the packaging so well I thought that he forgot to swap it out for the new one.

Komesu is never too busy to get your bike in and out within a few hours and he is good at what he does.  Last year right before IM Japan the bolt to my brake's hub quick release stripped not allowing it to hold the brake cable.  Komesu re-threaded the hub then made a screw that fit, fixing the quick release.  He did this for about $5 and saved me from having to order parts online and wait until they were delivered here.

That sounds like the best LBS I have ever heard of!

Agreed!

Grampa Fred says "dont get ahead of yourself DC"

But yes more challenges in May sounds about right.

I will lay down this challenge:

Swim 36,000 yards (20 miles)
Bike 700 miles
Run 100 miles

I'm in for this regardless but welcome anyone silly enough to join me

Gee Fred I would have to cut my volumes/miles down.

PennState - 2010-04-16 6:17 AM BTW, my new avatar is from the run at LP 2009. I am getting more and more excited as the race gets closer. Anyone else?

I was just on your logs and saw the avatar, love it! I am getting super excited, it finally kicked in. I also just found out I may be in Lake Placid two weekends in May! What are the odds I can swim the weekend of May 14? Full sleeve and neoprene cap or just crazy? The coldest OWS I've done was about 53-55 and it was ok. Thoughts?

To be honest, I have a half-marathon (three friends are running the full Marathon that same day) and I have two Half Ironman's I'm more focused on and excited about.  I am finding it a little easier to motivate myself during training now that LP is only 99 days away, though.  Last night I had a very vivid dream about LP.  I was late for the race, my wetsuit wouldn't zip up right and had gaps all along the zipper.  By the time I got to the water the Swim had already started 2 minutes ago.  I didn't have my Transition for the Bike or Run set up so I was trying to ask volunteers along the swim course to tell my family to set up my transitions for me.  Part of the swim went through abandoned motels and alleyways.  It was a very strange dream.  It's about the dozenth time in the last two years I've been late for a race.

I think come mid-June, after all my shorter Races reality of my first Ironman will start to really hit me and I'll start getting excited.

My only question would be should I jump in feet first, or dive head first, cause you don't wanna do the dip-your-toe-in and just walk in slowly.  Just do it LM!!

Thanks DC for the invite! I will check out that thread. Cedar Beach is beautiful. I will most likely swim near my house and save the driving-around time for my family, but you never know, if we are out that way I will let you know!

California guy: wow, you DO count if you've been swimming in that cold water. Welcome to the polar bear club.

LazyM: I'm with you, I like cold water! And open water is way more fun than the pool.

I just have to share my big breakthrough today. Some of you know I tore my PF right before my IM last year so I didn't run for 4 months and had to ease back run/walking for the past few. I've just recently moved to continuous runs and did my first 10 miler today totally pain free. I had some setbacks over the past couple weeks, one run was so atrocious I actually cried afterward. So to bounce back and finally have a decent long run was really incredible. It makes me feel like I'm finally getting back to normal. I hope this sets the tone for a really good training weekend!
