I'm racing the same day.  I'll probably train normally until that Friday and turn my long run into a nice easy 5-10k, Saturday off, Sunday race.  I probably could do without the run at all on Friday to be honest so I'll play it by ear.

It was pretty muggy this morning at 5:40 am.  Took one bottle of heed, and one of water, and finished them both on a 26+ mile ride.  I ususally don't take that much in for a 1 hr 25 min ride.  It "almost" feels like Texas!  Maybe another 20 degrees and we'd be there.

I know you crazy Tri people probably don't taper for a Sprint, but my first one is August 7th.  I'd like to have fresh legs, and perform as well as possible.  Our wonderful mentor , aka Kelly, is going to be at the same race.  I now feel confident I don't have to hold on to her legs during the swim.  But she is still going to kick my a$$.

My plan is to follow my training plan for the next 2 weeks, then treat the race week as a rest week and just reduce my volume.  Rest completely 2 days before, and the day prior maybe just a light spin on the bike.

What would all of you do?

Most important thing before a long race is to be rested.  Most important thing before a short race is to be sharp.

For Niantic I would take Friday off completely and then on Saturday do a 15 minute EASY swim, and hour EASY bike and a 10 minute EASY T run early in the morning and then rest for the reaminder of the day.

Just Taunting the vegetarian types.

I became an omnivore once I got pregnant with Conrad.  I say bring on the puppies, kittens, and swans....

BUT if you're ever in my hood, I will serve you beans and greens with a side of baked tofu.

soy is bad for us male types.  apparently it turns us into girls.

I do the same with shifting, shift to the smaller ring early if I know I'll need to be there eventually. It's too easy to drop off the front ring gears if you shift under a heavy load while climbing.

So, in other news, I'm getting concerned for the OLY July 31st. Not in a "Am I prepared" kind of way. But "will they actually have it".

That fire that burned 125,000+ acres in the area that started at the beginning of June is still going (Las Conchas Fire). It's a bit north of the lake, but it burned within a couple of miles of it originally. They have had the lake and the area around it closed ever since then, as they are using the lake for the Helos to pick up water to dump on the fire still. It was supposed to open back up last week, which got pushed to tomorrow, which is now pushed back to the 26th.

I'm not feeling very confident that they will be open now. I'm not even sure what they will do; cancel altogether? move the event elsewhere and make it a duathlon? We don't have an abundance of lakes/water here, so there's really very few places to make this happen.

My guess is that it'll be a brick (a bike -run) using a TT start.  That's the normal plan when the swim is cancelled.

I figured it would be something like that. The only thing is, the whole area is closed, not just the water itself. I think they did it for the safety of the fire crews and to eliminate confusion to the public (why can I go UP TO the water, but not in it?). I sure hope they get everything opened, though.

uhcoog - 2011-07-19 4:11 PM Orange Cream anything is kinda scary actually.

Nom nom nom good.

Seriously they taste really good.  2 Orange cream power bars (one each loop).  Raspberry gels for the first loop of the bike and strawberry banana for the second loop.  A banana in transition.  Lemon lime shot bloks for the first loop of the run, black cherry for the second.  A strawberry banana power gel at miles 8 and 16.

Also very excited.  Looks like the swim may be wetsuit illegal.

Wetsuit legal in the middle of the summer is nice.

Curious, if I were to hammer my bike leg in my next race as it's only 13.5 miles do you think that would effect my run that much?

you have to define hammer.  in a spint, the bike should be pretty hard (as should the run). The question is how hard is too hard.  It tough to tell without more (HR/watts) data.

Good point.  Guess I have a couple weekends to play with my HR data and see how I want to work it.

I don't know about the Orange Cream flavor either, but to each her own

What would all of you do?

I like to do a swim the day before a race.  Swimming really loosens up any nagging pains I have in my body.  I come out feeling all stretched and sleepy.

For this weekend's race (Sunday), I'm taking Saturday completely off.  Friday I'll do a 30 minute spin and a 30 minute run.  I stacked my more difficult workouts toward the beginning of the week, so I'd have the second half to recover a bit.  The only reason I'm taking Sat. off is because I have houseguests coming in for birthday parties.  Too busy to get to the pool!

I think you ought to do something light and easy - spin or swim.  Then rest your legs as much as you can during the day.

Um, ok, I got some cheap cycling shoes and tried to walk around the house in them.  How in the heck do people run in transition with these things on?  No way I'm going to clip them in and strap them on while riding with my limited experience.  Do I just hope I don't fall on my rear and look like a fool?

Just take it easy and be careful in transition.  They take some getting used to.

You'll be fine. After a few rides you won't even realize you are wearing them. Just take shorter strides when running your bike in transition, it seems to help for me.

Todays stats:

Currently, temp is 80 degrees with 77% humidity

Mid-Day, temp supposed to be above 100, not sure where humidity will be but could barely breathe Monday night leaving work it was so high.
