Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bryan, Just to clarify the rules (I looked at some older pages, but couldn't find it). What does a "spin class" count for? I normally count it as 18 miles (I can usually bike 20 mph on a flat course outside), however I thought you indicated it was 16. Please confirm. I got one hour of spin class and 800m of swim before work this morning! Look out, here we come ![]() |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Go team! Go!!! Billy your in, end run around John (sorry meant end Bike around John) and go long! Very Long! In fact, the entire team go long without injuring yourselfs! BTW, Gary's team has one main rule (it sounds a lot like one of LRR's rules but its mine, all mine!!! but I share) which is no missing rest days to make up workouts. Moving a rest day is okay, taking an extra one when needed is encouraged, but missing one is grounds for punishment. most likely not being able to run/swim/bike laps! Team name suggestions: Gary's Go getters, Team we will crush our opponents until they yell uncle! Team Tri-or-die, The Fab six, Team never-let-Gary-pick-our-name. To make things easier I will collect everyones (from my team) from their blog. Please put your mileage in your blog. FBP, that means you also! |

Awesome, lets set this up. I do plan on a March ride in New Orleans to cover as much of the course as possible (so looking at 40-50 miles). Pick a few weekends that look good. Main thing I have to plan around is my son's soccer tournements. Lena - thanks! I guess I need to give LRR a little credit for the rule (okay a lot of credit). Having been sidelined due to injury I just don't want anyone to get hurt. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Can the more experienced triathletes help me with this question? How do I know if I am allowed a body suit for an event and if I am allowed, how do I pick the correct one? I think the IMLOU is not allowing a particular type of suit but I am confused. I know it is a stupid question but thought y'all may understand that I am a simple person. Billy |

![]() | ![]() For a race to be wetsuit legal the temp must be below 78F. If you wear a wetsuit in temps over that you are likely to become overheated In most races westsuits are allowed. There are several kind of wetsuits, shorties, sleeveless and full. The millimeter of thickness of neoprene determines if it is for triathletes(surfers/scuba have thicker suits). Wetsuits make you more bouyant. Most people are 10 seconds/hundred meters faster in a wetsuit. There is a GREAT sale on wetsuits right now through Xterrra. They are offering people 50% off if they are registered on BT. I got a full wetsuit for $149. Fitting the wetsuit is tricky. You have to measure yourself. Then choose the size based on the manufacturers table. They send you the suit and you are allowed to swim in it one time ( I just swam in mine in the pool last week). When you first put it on it will feel like a sausage casing. Once you get in the water it will mold more to your body. If its comfortable, you keep it...if not you return and try again. I love my wetsuit. I wear it for every race. I have never raced in a tri that wasnt wetsuit legal. I find that the bouancy really makes a huge difference and I am always faster. I strongly suggest that if you can you buy one or rent one for a race. Most races have some sort of rental agreement with a dealer. If you own one it makes it easier to practice. It is very different swimming in open water; and wearing a wetsuit is very different. These really should be practiced before race day whenever possible. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm still debating between renting and buying. I hope to lose 25 pounds between now and the end of August, which would put me in a different sized suit by my main race in September. Are there any races that demand a certain type of suit? Can I choose sleeveless and still race in May? Can I have a long set in September? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Billy, I can't add anything more to Mav's comments other than SHE's RIGHT (as usual) .... As a novice swimmer I always use a wetsuit in races. I actually have always used one when doing OWS. It is still my security blanket when OWS. If you get too tired to swim or get a cramp, you can simply flip over to your back and float. It is almost like having a life jacket on! I am getting more and more comfortable in the water and my swimming abilities that I will likely do some OWS this summer without one, but will always use it for a race when allowed (so far all of mine have been allowed). Mav's comments on the speed are right on. They do take some time to get use to them and make sure you train several times in one prior to a race!!!! Don't make the same mistake I did and use a wetsuit for the first time in a race (Bryan's rule #! is sooooooo true! - NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY!!!!). I actually had a panic attack for the first (and so far only) time in my life and I believe it had to do with the "tightness" feeling of the wetsuit on my chest. Now, I love swimming in one! Good luck. |

![]() | ![]() swimmermama - 2010-02-02 9:21 AM I'm still debating between renting and buying. I hope to lose 25 pounds between now and the end of August, which would put me in a different sized suit by my main race in September. Are there any races that demand a certain type of suit? Can I choose sleeveless and still race in May? Can I have a long set in September? If its wetsuit legal then you can wear any type you want. I have full suits because most of my races the water is under 70 degrees, and its too expensive to have two types of suits. In May the water in Indiana is probably pretty cold ( low 60's) wear a full! Renting a suit is pricey...usually over $50. If you plan on doing more than 2-3 races...I would buy one. Check out the size measurements of the Blue Seventy suits and the Xterra, you can loose substaintial weight and it will still fit. Last summer I dropped about 12 pounds and my suit was fine. Thank you Dan for admitting I am always right!!!! ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well my Day 1 of February was/wasn't good... I had a meeting with a Personnal trainer - we didn't do a work-out, just talked about her services and what she will be able to do for me. She has a degree in Nutrition, so the program will include a nutrition plan designed specifically for ME... I'll go through 2 weeks of de-tox - she has an approved list of foods - really just no processed foods... then we add foods back in and see how I react to them. This is the most promising food plan I've ever had... WW is all about eating as much as you can while staying within the points - you WILL lose weight, but will you be healthy? Will you be burning FAT? Anyway, I'm excited/nervous about this program. Yes, I'll continue to swim & ride, weight training will supplement what I already do... I start with her on Friday for a fitness test. Don't ask where this money is coming from - I have no clue LOL swim after work for me today |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So what you are saying is that just because the water temp is above 80 or whatever the cutoff is, wetsuits are still legal? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am sorry but I am still confused, is there a suit that is not considered a wet suit that is legal? On all videos of Ironman events I see contestants wearing full suits, are these not considered wetsuits? Please bear with me. Finished todays ride, 30.6 miles in 1:45. Billy |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Unless a freak of nature occurs and you never know...but IMLOU will not be wetsuit legal. 2009 a freak of nature did occur because the weather was unseasonably cool and still the swim was not wetsuit legal. Usually that time of year in Louisville the temps are in the 90's and it's very humid. I only live an hour north of Louisville. But 2009 the high was 76! It was sooo weird but nice. Anyway the water temp was still warm. Anyway to answer your question there are speedsuits and they are not wetsuits. Some did wear speedsuits in the swim but I'm not sure if they are worth the money. They are not bouyant and thick like wetsuits. But yes there are suits that are not wetsuits. |

![]() | ![]() elcaminobill - 2010-02-02 7:47 PM Ok with that being said what is everyones opinion on speedsuits and recommendations. NOT worth it!!! Unless you are a pro I wouldnt invest. The time you gain is so minimal, you can make it up on the bike!!!! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Billy, Mav is right (I have no problem stating that Mav is always right!) a speedsuit is not worth it. What you may be seeing is some folks in one-piece Tri suits. With that said Finis, I believe, is selling out their speedsuits. If you can find your size you can get them pretty cheap ($29 which I was tempted). Key thing to remember is that the swim leg is the shortest leg and you want to come out of the water in a decent time with your legs saved for the bike/run. Got a nice swim in today at lunch and managed to get a 30 min run in tonight. Still fighting off the cold so cut the hour run to 30 minutes.
