David- Nice job on the 5K!

It is also raining here in Vegas, if you want to call it that, it's really just drizzling. The real problem is the wind which was blowing us all over the place. We still mananged to get out on the bikes, but cut our ride short to 22 miles just in case it started downpouring (which actually does happen maybe 2xs a year here). Our usual route is in the middle of the desert and has no shelter, so we stuck to parts of the trail near the highway/city streets and rode through Boulder City. Good ride for me since I have been off the bike for so long.

I will say that I think all the running for the HM really helped me out on the bike. One of the guys I bike with mentioned that he can tell my cardio has improved a lot, and yeah parts of the trail do not kill me like they used to (guess that means it's time to pick up the pace :0 ). He took my bike at the end of the ride and is going to fix it up for me (lower the handlebars, put in a bike computer that will tell me my cadence, and get me some different pedals/shoes). He's been riding for a while, so I trust him to do whatever he wants to it. So, I'll get the bike back in Jan. Until then, I'll have to use the stationary bike at the gym.

Very excited to be on winter break. I'm looking to take advantage and do a workout everyday this week. I'll be in Buffalo the 26-31 with just my daughter, so I've been reading those winter training threads to try and pysch myself up for running in the freezing snow (although my parents have an elliptical as a last resort).

Can anyone give me the link to Jorge's Winter Cycling Program. I've been searching for it with no success. Is it one of the free programs available?

There are links to the right of the web page that explains the program and how to read the workouts, etc.

The actual workouts are in the blog at the bottom.  To get the previous ones, you may need to click the link to the older posts.

Ok- yet another question.

Read Jorge's program and he wants me to find my THR by doing a 30 min TT (which I'm understanding is just riding as hard as I can for that time?). I don't have a trainer yet, so I'm looking to do these workouts on a spin bike at my gym. My question is: What should the resistance be like on the spin bike? From what I undestand about a fluid trainer, the resistance gets harder as you push harder (please correct me if I'm wrong). But this is not the case on a spin bike, so what should I do? I'm thinking of setting it to a resistance that feels like a slight uphill, so I have to push but could hold a good pace for the 30 mins. Let me know. Thanks.

Can't answer your question Jaime, but good luck with the TT.  I have been putting it off b/c it just sounds downright painfull!

In Ok now for xmas visiting inlaws and wow is it warm and humid.  Ran 45 minutes with about 6,000 ft less elevation - great cardio wise, but the humidity was brutul! good pace about 40 seconds faster per mile than a few months ago.

While I am here I plan to run  4x a week and get in a few mountain bike rides.

Robin- Have a great holiday. You're right humidity changes the run. I noticed that when I went to Buffalo this summer. Like you, I'm used to a very dry climate.

I'm wondering if I'm ready for Jorge's plan. Found a plan on this site that focuses on RPMs rather than HR that seems a bit easier to follow (again can't see RPMs on a spin bike either, but I could estimate that pretty good). I will admit that all the terminalogy was confusing me a bit, but maybe I should starting learning about it. I just want to do the best thing for my current ability.

For the TT, just try your best.  The key is to try and keep a steady effort the whole way...you shouldn't be jumping around and changing the resistance mid way.  So really...it's a lot of trial and error.  Rarely do you nail a 20-30 minute TT on the first try.

Make sure to do a proper warmup though.  At least 20 minutes...with some short hard efforts mixed in there.  Then cool down properly as well.

Good luck.  I did a 20 minute test on my trainer when I first got my power meter.  It was brutal...but very rewarding when you finish.

If you are training on a spin bike without the numbers, just use a watch and do the best you can, you might have to adjust, but its ok, as get better at it you'll nail the pacing down better. If you have no HR monitor or RPMs, just go by effort (how i train right now). easy, moderate, hard, extremely hard. its not exact but it will git you most of the way there right now.

Thanks David & J. I do have a HR monitor, so I am planning on wearing it to get my THR (which is what the plan tells me to do on day 1). I wear the HR monitor during running and it has helped me pace myself for my races. I have no idea what my resting HR is or what my HR should be during my runs. I just try and keep myself in the 150-160s and slow down if I get into the 180s during a race. I'm hoping the TT gives me a better idea about where my HR should be during the bike. Training with HR is something I want to learn more about.

I'll give Day 1 a try and let you know how it goes. I told my husband that I have no idea what I'm doing. He said, "Just get on the bike and pedal fast. What's so confusing?" I'm probably over thinking the whole thing.

Great job on that 5K David.  Is that a new PB?

Jackie:  I decided I wasn't ready for Jorge's plan.   I knew from recent experience that if I pushed that hard, I would end up taking 3-4 days off with knee/hip problems.   So, I decided just to focus on slowly increasing my time/resistance on the trainer.   I started at 5 days/week at 30 minutes back on Nov 1 and this week I'm doing 60 minutes per session.   I started out averaging 23 km/hr and yesterday's session was at 29 km/hr.   I can tell that my pedaling technique is improving and my legs are getting stronger every week.  If I can maintain this consistency, I know I'll be much stronger on the bike come April when I can get back outside again.    Moving forward, I'm going to keep 3 of the sessions at 60 minutes and take the other two up 10 minutes/week until I get two 120 minutes.

Jorge's plan is a bit intense...but maybe you could take the framework of his workouts, and apply it to your current fitness levels.  If you're only comfortable riding 30 minutes...then try to condense his 1 hour workout into that time frame.  Maybe instead of 4x5 minute intervals...do 4x3 minute intervals.  Or 2x5 minute intervals.

I like the variety he provides...if nothing else...it keeps the workouts interesting.

I need to take a good hard look at Jorge's program myself.  I said I was going to get on that earlier and never did it.  I want my cycling to be up a notch or two come spring, so I better get on it.  Right now my cycling seems to be getting better but I am doing the same type workouts all the time and I am sure that variety would work better for me.  At least it should not get stale feeling.  Plus if I am given something hard to stay on track with I know I will challenge myself more.

I got an easy 5k in today to help kill the monotony of the week here at all the family's houses.  I was at my in-laws today and I needed to get out for a while.  It's like a bingo parlor with everyone smoking and I can only take so much before I want to explode.  Tomorrow is a swim and a 5 mile run.  The swim will be with my daughter and these are always fun for me.  I hope to have her show me some strong drills done correctly so I can apply them to my workouts and know I am doing them right.

Dan- great job being consistent! That is my number 1 training goal for 2011 no matter what plan I decide to do.

J- Great idea about modifying the plan. I forget that I can do things like that.

Dirk- You're awesome. What more can I say? I hope I'm working out with my kids when they are older. So many people I work with who have older kids are divorced and have awful/nonexistent relationships with their kids who are drop-outs/druggies/jerks. You give me hope that this is not everyone's fate and that I will make it through this crazy time of endless cleaning and diaper changing and come out with great kids who want to hang out with me and my husband.

Ok, did Day 1. Here are some things I learned

1. I don't know how to hurt on the bike. I had a hard time really pushing myself. I could barely keep my HR in the 160s (I was shooting for 170s). But my legs did hurt.

2. The trainer/spin bike seems like a good place to work on form. Keeping my upper body still and putting all my power into my legs and keeping a steady, smooth cadence. Def still need to work on that.

My ave HR for the TT was 164, but I think if I use this number as my THR I won't be working hard enough. I was thinking of putting my THR at 170. That would make the other numbers look like this: z1: 113, z2: 140, z3: 160, z4:179. What do you think?

If you feel that you had some left in the tank, then maybe I would use 166.  170 is a big jump IMO.

J- Thanks for the input. I will adjust the numbers accordingly.

Looks like we are in the archives now and everyone is really saying their goodbyes. Thanks again everyone. This has been a great experience for me. I was looking back at some of the early posts on this thread and...Wow...that just seems like so long ago. And look at all we've accomplished.

I will also be joining another group in Jan, but I will still be checking this thread and I look forward to seeing what you all do in 2011. Good luck. Have a great holiday & new year!

It seems appropriate for one of my last "official" posts to this group to announce that I had a PR in my training run today!  Was able to run 2.8 miles at just under a 10 min/mile pace. It was a tempo run, but definately not pushing too hard. Can't wait til the next 5k to really gage my progress! Thanks so much everyone for all the encouragement!
