DANIEL -

Galad you're back! I had been wondering what had become of you, and hoped all was well. And I see that you are fine, busily cooking up a monster scheme for Oct 8. Brave lad! I will tell you right now that I have never done such an event, and while i can help with marathon training, remember too that all my marathons have been on terra pavementa -- no trail runs for this cat, let alone 50-milers.

Which one is it, anyhow?

Jeff - I did what you said and let the air (co2) out of the tire and pumped it up, will see if that holds.

Lori - what is a 30/30

Johanne - what phone do you have (Iphone, android???). Just wanting to see about that app. So I guess the app make a noise and you try to make your feet strikes to meet the noise? It sounds like you are going to be busy, but a fun busy.  Can you please make a horse trip to Mobile, my daugher would love it, she is a huge animal lover, I guess she takes after me.  She really loves horses, but the riding stables down here are really expensive so we cant do them.

Daniel the 50/50 trail, you put in your comments you might do the 50mi run, now is that a 50minute or 50mile? or is it a 50 mile bike and run.

Well I have taken the last 4 days off, not that I wanted to because it has bothered me, but I have really been upset about the inner thigh issue, it just bothers me that I cannot train the way I want due to the pain and being scared that I will make it worse.  But this morning I decided to stop acting like a baby and went to the gym to do strength train on my legs (I have put off stngth training for a long time, but I realize how important it is so I need to figure how to fit that into my day).  I also wanted to swim and at 5:30 I walked downstairs to the pool and the lifeguard was not there, I was told he/she was running late. Ok that made me mad because I have been sitting out and now when I was ready, I cldnt do it.  I only have about 30min in the morning to swim and at 5:45 I had to leave because they were not there. Cant swim this evening due to my sons baseball practice.

I hope everyone has a great day

Haha, thanks for dropping in Steve.  Sorry about kinda disappearing.  I love this group, and everyone here, but was feeling stressed trying to keep up with the post count.  I haven't an effort lately, although been meaning to drop in and say hi again.

Doing alright with the training, but work is a little crazy.  Getting pumped for my first tri race in less than 2 months (yikes!).  Good news though, my brother arrives in Taiwan in less than a month, and will be staying for a year to teach.  Looking forward to having a sibling so close by for a while.  Also, his girlfriend is a runner, so that'll be nice too!

Hope everyone here is doing well!  Good luck with all your upcoming races!

stevebradley - 2011-04-22 4:15 PM ALEX - Good stuff! It's a week out from New Paltz, and that's the BEST time to start feeling nervous. Far be it now than a sudden seige of nerves the night before or the morning of. You now have all those days to work it through, which mostly means identifying specific problem areas, and then systematically figuring out the appropriate strategies with which to deal with them. Sooooo.....any kind of clear ideas of exactly what is bringing on the nervousness? Quite literally, it can be anything and everything, and as with my days of treaching and thinking I had heard every excuse for not-done homework.......I am sure I have heard every reason for people's pre-race nerves! For my part, i still get nervous before races, and in one way or severl or many, i guess I've been nervous before every race. Anyhow, I can probably give you somne advice to tide you over between now and race day, and then a different approach to race-day nerves themselves. I will say, though, that many people lose their nervousness when they get to the race site and start feeling the vibe and digging the camaraderie. I will say this now and will reppeat it again, but plan on getting to the race site as early as possible. That way, you'll be in charge of how the next couple of hours go -- it'll be your choice of plum parking space, and ample time to either claim or find your transition spot, and beyond that you won't have to be in a line for body-marking --- or porta-potties! I just love getting myself all set up, and then either wandering around watching people, or yakking, or just sitting slightly away from the t-zone and getting into my own space. You'll be fine, Alex, i am sure; it's few people who let their nerves get the best of them. And if you haven't dumped your nervousness by the morning of, once you get moving you won't have much time to feel the least bit nervous. The task will be in front of you, and each stride or pedal stroke you take will have the import of working you that much closer to the finish. You'll have all that activity around you, and mostly you'll just give in to the mass flow of it. It'll be a blast!! All that said, though, let me know what's bothering you the most. I'll address it either from my own personal experience, or from what I have heard others say about the same problem as it affected them. Okay?

Steve,

I found it.  Some things I would like your thoughts on:

1-Swim warm up, specifically how early you get in and how long.

2-What to do if you experience open water swim freak out.

3-What to do if you hyperventilate.

4-How to handle big chop or waves.

I think it would be very beneficial for everyone who is coming up on their first tri.  Just remembering how I felt before and during my first tri open water swim.  I am mainly concerned with number 4 since I will be swimming in Lake Michigan.

Lori - what is a 30/30

The :30/:30s are 30 seconds fast and 30 seconds easy for 30-40 minutes (once form breaks, you should stop).  I guess it is supposed to raise your lactic acid tolerance.  In other words, you should be able to improve your ability to run faster longer.

I do my :30/:30s at 7:21-7:41 pace on the fast interval and 10:00 pace on the easy.

Thanks Lori - I guess I understand, but WOW if I understand this correctly your slow pace is the pace like running a 10min mile, Heck I guess when I do the 30/30 my SUPER DUPER FAST PACE is your slow pace.  You are like that little Mexican Mouse (Speedy Gonzales) Areba Areba...    I just recently noticed people talking about that acid thing you said in your post.  I guess that is something I need to read about since I noticed people talking about it.  Since im new to this race world, there is a lot Im trying to learn.  Thanks..

Well another nice long ride on Sunday coming up.  There is a 37 mile bike ride going from Fairhope Al to Lulu's place (Jimmy Buffet's sister).  The ride is to help raise money for our coastal area.  Well me and several other folks from the Local Tri Group are going to meet at Lulu's on Sunday at 6am and Bike to Fairhope to meet the bike ride group and then we will turn around with them and go back to Lulu's.  Total distance is going to be about 68 miles.  On the 1st ride to meet the group we are going to take a different route which will save us about 6 miles.

Steve,

Here is the website for the Oct. 8th race:

http://leonavalleytrailraces.com/

I am training with a buddy who is doing the Leona Divide 50mile run this weekend.  He is a very valuable resource for training; he is also introducing me to, slowly but surely, to a large local group who all do ultra-marathons.  They are a super cool and laid back group of people.

gdsemiller - 2011-04-28 4:28 AM

Daniel the 50/50 trail, you put in your comments you might do the 50mi run, now is that a 50minute or 50mile? or is it a 50 mile bike and run.

George,

That would be 50 MILES of trail running, ONLY running. I think it will be a fun event.  I am still swimming 2x a week to try to build up my endurance there.  I am currently still really terrible at swimming in a pool so I know I will be super "shaky" in the open water.

POWER!

CONTACT!!

High winds killed our power yesterday afternoon, and it came back about an hour ago; it was the fridge and sump pump kicking in that woke me up! So, that was about 14 hours without power...but better than a few estimates we heard last night that it might not be until Saturday morning!!! So, maybe elsewhere is still without, but at least for now we're okay.

So, I will post this now so I don't lose it to another outage, and will get to you all as soon as I can!

LORI -

Thank you for searching around for that one to Alex about anxiety; that saves me some degree of time. I might try to find the one to George about swimming, but I think I'll just re-do it --- say if I can keep my stories straight!

It'll help, too, to have your itemized questions. Thanks for those, too.

GEORGE -

I feel your pain about not being able to train. I have been that route more times than I care to count, and all I can say is that with time it gets easier. Part of that is realizing that it's one of the prices we pay for what we do, and part is that I have just learned some ways to compensate from time lost. It also helps that in some senses I "have done it all"; that is, I have raced those scores of times, and while I'd hate to lose my race opportunities, at least I can't really say I haven't raced enough.

There is a lot of psychological stuff involved in working around injuries, and that might be fun to toss around some here ijn the group. I sure don't have all the answers, however, and my own current situation has me worried about my own training and racing. I THINK I'm mostly on top of it psychologically and emotionally......but work still needs to be done!

Final thought -- if it's a leg that's bothering you, be careful about strength training on it! That's usually the type of situation where I'm working on the other half. That is, if it's shoulders bothering me I don't swim or lift, but run or ride instead. If it's a lower body problem, my first course of action WILL be to swim or lift. (Remember, I never do leg-strengthening due to probably-irrational fears that I will re-tear my mensicus.) My two cents says to let that thigh get some decent rest.

Nicely-executed April, to be sure! Maybe you just needed a few months to get in synch with yourself, to let all the componentry meld into one nice machine....and here you are. Halleloo!

Hi All.

I'm very impressed with the amount of work you are all doing.  I wish I were keeping up.  On May 12 I give my last final and then I have no more excuses. It is hard to fit everythig in.  I have been traveling alot to watch my son  run (he can run) and that has been eating up  the weekends.  But I have been doing what I can.  Well that is not technically true since there are hours in the day when I sleep.

George, Are you getting better? I hope so.

Steve, When you are swimming is it better to do flip turns.  It seems that would allow you  to maintain some momentum but they make me dizzy. Is that common?

I am leaving work soon to go for a run. Tomorrow I ride and swim and Sunday long run. Well, long for me.

Good to catch up. keep up the good work, you are inspirational.

Ellen

Ellen,

I get dizzy too!  My old swim coach gave up, he couldn't figure it out.

I think if I did flip turns I would somehow end up two lanes over due to drunken swimming!

Who is racing this weekend?

I  couldn't hold 7:21 or 7:41 pace for a whole mile.  I can do 30 seconds of it at a time!

Ear plugs have done wonders for that dizzy sensation...I can do what I call 'flop turns" not quite graceful enough to be a flip turn.

Who is racing this weekend?

Doing a 100k bike rally in Muenster Texas. I picked this over another tri in McKinney for a little more bike emphasis and change of pace.

A tri next weekend "Tri for Humanity" sprint

I have not attempted the flip flop roll thing, Im afraid I might get stuck halfway through it and then the lifeguard will have to save me.

Doing a bike rally tour thing, its not a race but a ride and it should be about 68 miles.  It should be fun there are alot of folks from the tri group I joined today riding in it.

Is anyone having the Ride of Silence in their town in May?  On May 18th in Mobile all cyclists are getting together for a 6.5 silent bike ride to commemorate cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling.  What I have been told this is an international thing.  I really look forward to this ride, since I know someone that was involved on a hit and run last week.  Also that is why I gave up cycling a very long time ago because the folks down here just dont care.
