Take a look at this video.  I realize there are prob 1,000+ swimmers, but notice how they all keep their head above water for a while.  I am assuming it is because it is so congested.  Is this what I should expect for a swim start in any event, and at what point do you settle in and start your normal swimming/head turning?  This is crazy!!!!

You're going to psyche yourself out watching vids like that.  One, look at those concrete pilings.  I'd have my head up until I was past those bad boys too.  Two that's a mass start.  You probably won't run into one of those your first time out the box.  Waved starts are much easier.  Takes me 200ish meters to settle in.

I agree with Scott.  Don't stress yourself out, you'll be fine.  Just be prepared for contact, but hold your space and it will thin out pretty quickly.  Maybe start to the outside, will add a little distance but you'll have more space.  I think the fact that you know there will be contact is good.  It's the people that go in not having any idea that freak out when hands start touching them.

When you do Niantic there are only 100 people per wave and there is plenty of room to spread out.  You'll have plenty of space.

Good morning, all!

We had a heat index of 115 yesterday.  It was HOT.  So, our power went out at 11:00 pm.  It woke me up.  Didn't come back on until around 4, so I slept very, very little last night.  I lay in a pool of sweat for about 5 hours.  EWWW.  I feel like complete dog crap today.  I did a short spin around the hood to loosen up the legs, and then I followed that up with a short recovery run.  I'm not doing anything tomorrow.  Birthday parties and guests.  Race on Sunday morning (ought to be interesting getting everyone out of here for it!!!!).  Mom, sister #3, and sister #3's best friend will be here this evening.  Sister #1, Sister #2, and my niece will be here tomorrow.  Full house!!!

I've really let my swim training slip lately.  I need to get focused again.  I've just had little time to get over to the pool and all OWS is at least a 45 minute drive.  Plus, honestly, I've just been dreading it lately.  I hope my love of swimming is rekindled once I take some time off.

Anyway, have a great weekend, friends!  Stay cool

. . . and if all else fails and you are nervous or a little freaked in the beginning, start at the back of your wave and maybe ever start out slow to give everyone time to get ahead of you so you can do your own race without worries.  Good luck!  You will do great.

I am sure I am psyching myself out for only a sprint, but it's my first.  I've done a few mountain bike races (only at a novice level), so the nervousness of stepping up to the line doesn't affect me all that much.  That's not to say I don't get a pit in my stomach, but I know what to expect, and know there will be some congestion. I think I have too much competitiveness in me to hold back and wait for people to take off.  But I may need to let that competitveness go for the swim portion. Or maybe not. I'm happy with my progress on the bike and run, especially for being at this for only 6 months or so.

I'm def getting excited for my first event

Good luck to those racing this weekend.

Long run for me this morning.  Good thing about the heat, lots of folks in skimpy clothes.  Bad thing about the heat, lots of folks in skimpy clothes.

I could use some quick advice please - my first tri is tmrw - sprint distance. The high is supposed to be 99 with a heat index of 115 - really high humidity. The team I race with is recommending that we don't race at all - too dangerous. This morning it was 86 degrees at 7am. My wave doesn't go off until 8:20. I really want to race - maybe not at race speeds, but I want to try. The company putting on the tri has added extra water stations and a second misting tent for the run. I am hydrating today and will listen to my body tomorrow. My plan is to only run in the Z2/low Z3 and if it goes higher to walk.I know that this race is not going to be any indicator of what I can really do.

What would everyone here do?

I'd race, but I've grown up in those types of conditions so I think they're pretty normal.  It would hit my radar if we were talking an Oly, and consider dropping out of a HIM, but a sprint wouldn't bother me at all honestly.

I think you can race but you need to be careful.  Make sure to watch your HR (its a really good indicator of how well you're dealing with the heat).  Drink lots of fluids (with electrolytes) and remember its better to DNF than to get a heat related illness.  When I did IMKY at the run start it was 104 and humid.  Not fun, but do-able if you're smart about it.

Also Beth always has a first timers wave.  You can request to start there and the swim should be a little less hostile.

Excellent TdF today (not a Mark Cavendish stage but a good one nonetheless).  I highly recommend watching.

My first sprint is now in the books - It was SOOO HOT and the team I race with was highly recommending not racing. We decided to take it one transistion at a time and not race hard - no PR was planned. It was about 93 degrees at 8:00 when I started. Swim was good - I started at the back of the pack but soon found myself in the middle of the pack getting kicked and hit. Bike was a great course and the run was HOT. I just watched my HR and when it got too high I would walk a minute to get it down again to prevent overheating. I wished I could have really tested my training to see how fast I could go, but today was not the day. It was fun though!! Looking for my next one already! Thanks everyone for all your support!!
