TIP OF THE WHEN I THINK OF IT

How to Track Your Swimming Laps

First, definitely find out how long your pool is.  Most will be 25, but rejoice if it is 50!

Next, observe the lane dividers.  They've got those plastic rings that make them up, right?

OK, so I push the rings together away from the wall so that there's space between them and the wall.  My pool is 25, so I swim to the other end (25) and come back to where I started (50).  I then scoot one of those rings away from the pack and move it against the wall.  So, for me, each ring stands for 50.

I hope this makes sense and helps.  It really has worked well for me.

I've never been able to count past the 4 lengths for a 100, I've always got some crazy song going through my head by then!

This is what I use.

Shannon, I'm so glad to hear you were able to go out and just do it.  Congrats on the weight loss, too.  Down is down!

I have trouble getting my HR down, too.  If I cut my speed in half, it only goes down a few beats per minute!  I'm not sure how you're defining your zones, but here is a link on BT from a tri coach that tells us the correct way to do it.  It can be a little overwhelming at first, but I encourage everyone to read and re-read his post carefully.  It's just really great stuff.

I think I could handle the bike for that one, but I am just up to 30min total time of running... I don't think I could run all out for 30 min.

I was looking at this one before you posted and was planning on doing it for the bike at least...

Interesting lap counter thing. I have always done what Lora does, use the platic discs on the lane dividers. What is really needed is a big "easy" button that you can attach or hang over the side of the pool so when I am doing 500's or so I just press and go, no stopping to move plastic things! Maybe I can build my own??

Hi Everyone

Had a great swim last night. 600 yards with only one rest.  I've got to work on my freestyle to breast stroke ratio, though.

I've been dreading the bike for some reason and have been slacking off on it.  I think maybe I'm fixating on my speed(lack thereof) and that's frustrating me. I think today I'm going to ignore the speed and go by heartrate/perceived exertion and time.  Then for Sunday's long bike, I'll take my husband and sister and just go for a fun ride.

Here's one for you - tracks laps and total time swimming.  Its a little expensive though.
http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/5204.htm

I've been thinking about getting one of those small ones.  The rings on my lane dividers aren't movable so that method wouldn't work for me unfortunately (great idea though!).  I can usually keep track of mine by breaking up the workout into sections.  I'll start with a 50m warmup (25m pool), then do 6x50m freestyle, then maybe 100m breaststroke or side kick, then back to 6x50 freestyle.  I found that if I break it up into parts I can keep track easier.  It would be nice to not have to count though.

Hi all -
I am doing a triathlon relay with my sister this Sunday - I'm swimming (375 in a pool), and biking (14.3 mi) and then I hand off to her because she is running the 5K.  I thought it would be a good intro to tri-ing.  I've been doing some swim and bike this week, and tapering a bit so that I have some energy left by the weekend.

2 questions -
1.  I am thinking of wearing my swimsuit (obviously, hah!), then pulling on bike shorts and a tech t-shirt for the bike.  It is supposed to be 80 this weekend, so I shouldn't be too cold.  I will race in a trisuit in July, but I haven't bought it yet.  Since I am not running, I think the swimsuit will provide enough support without a sports bra.  I am worried about chafing though with the swimsuit/bike short combo - does anybody recommend glide stuff?

2.  I expect it will take me 1:15 - 1:30 total and I was thinking of just putting Gatorade on the bike.  It doesn't make me nauseous like I have heard from some on here - for that length of time, do I need more GU or bar?

Wish me luck!  I'm scared silly - I am sure I will finish, just don't know in how long and hope they aren't closing up the transition area by the time I get back!

Very cool, so someone already made one! I love swimoutlet.com. I buy my suites from them and have been able to find some good deals on tri clothing. They are fast shippers and easy to deal with as well.

I'm going to take a rest day today.  I had 2.5 miles scheduled for a lunchtime run, but woke up with tired legs so I'm going to give them a break.  I want them to be as fresh as possible for my 10k on Saturday.  It will also give me a chance to take my bike over to the LBS at lunch so I can have them look at it for me.  Hopefully it's an easy fix - I want to get a long ride in on Sunday.  I think that will help some with my nerves about the bike portion of my tri coming up.

maggiewvu - 2009-04-22 5:44 PM Question, I'm reading about everyone swimming 500's etc...how do you keep track of how far you swim?  I think at the pool that I go to it's 25 yards long.  I think I'll lose count of how many times I go back and forth.

I used to lose track when I just tried to count 1..2..3, so I started keeping track by 50s and 100s.  So I'd swim 4 laps (in a 25 yd pool) and tell myself I'd done 1x100.  I don't actually count 4 laps, I just remember that I have to turn at the side I started on once before I stop.  Then just remember how many hundreds I'd done and figure out my total distance from there.  I think I'll try Lora's trick about moving the rings to keep track of my 100s (in case I ever get past 10!)

When I swim 500s, I update my count at every 50 (when I get back to the side of the pool I started on).  And I talk to myself about how far I've gone while I'm swimming.  "Okay, that was 100, only 4 more of them, now you're at 150....250 is halfway there...you're at 400, so only 100 to go, 100 is easy..."  With that dialog going on all the time I don't forget where I am, and it distracts me from worrying about how fast I'm going, etc.

I do have one of those finger lap counters on my wish list, though, because someday I hope to do longer than 500s and I don't know how much longer I can keep track of.  My brain can only take so much!

I just read the whole article (never mind that I'm supposed to be working).  It's really good, and I got some ideas I can try next time I'm in the pool.  I like that he says not to worry about the kick too much.  I'd been thinking I needed to put more effort into kicking, but I tend to forget about it when I'm in the water.

I too cannot keep track. I bought a simple timex watch that has the counter right on the front and that is what I use for all my timing. It is so fun I find myself timing other things.

http://www.timex.com/gp/product/B000P0VJN2/sr=1-30/qid=1240502311/ref=sr_1_30/183-2178556-1802241?ie=UTF8&m=A1S5XB33AHYRMX&n=267161011&timexBrand=core

I contemplated something fancier, but I felt like this was a good entry level watch. I would like a HR monitor, but maybe in the future.

I really like goswim.tv too. I am a visual learner so seeing things is always better for me than reading articles.

That Bike video was great! I really tried to push forward and then scrape my feet on the way back. I think it would have been a big help if I hadn't chose such a goofy program on the bike today...

That sounds like so much fun!! I would love to hand the run over to someone else!

Maybe you should give your swimsuit/bike short combo a try out on the bike before the race to see if you get any chafing? I know it will be different when it is wet, but at least you could get an idea...

I use BodyGlide on my neck when I swim. I guess I reach a bit too much on my left side and the suit strap gives me a little bite on the neck... looks like a hicky, yuck! It works great for me and I can still feel it after I'm done with my hr. workout. I got it at a local Tri store, but I also got a little stick of it in a goody bag from the mini-tri I did. Maybe you'll get one at packet pick-up.

Good luck!

Glad to hear you're tapering this week.  Smart, smart, smart.

I think what you're planning on wearing sounds perfect.  You may find you don't even need the tech t-shirt.  I haven't needed to use any glides - yet - but I did throw on bike shorts over my swimsuit for my first tri like you're planning on doing and I had zero problems with chaffing.  Make sure you'll be wearing a nice waterproof sunblock, though.

If Gatorade doesn't give you a prob while you've been biking during training, definitely go for it.  You really don't need a GU or a protein bar for this short of distance, but definitely make sure you're plenty hydrated.

Good luck, Mary Sue!  With your anticipated times, I don't think you'll have to worry about them closing Transition on you!    Can't wait to read all about it!

Good luck this weekend!  I'd love to do a relay but I'd be doing the swim and the run - the bike is my weakness right now.  I don't use Body Glide, but I do use Aquaphor to help with chafing on my runs.  I don't always need it, but figure it's better to have and not need, than not have it and have to deal with the consequences (ouch!).

I was wondering about Gatorade/water/GU/etc also.  I think I'm going to do Gatorade on the bike and then just water on my run.  Hopefully I won't be out there for more than about 2 hours total so that should be enough.  Although I'll probably eat everything in sight after I get done!

It's funny you should mention the transitions closing.  My DH asked me the other day if the one I'm doing is "beginner friendly".  I ran a half marathon where I was one of the last to come in and they had already started taking down the course and the aid stations before I reached the 10 mile mark, even though I was under their cut-off time.  He wanted to make sure that didn't happen to me again.  I love my DH Kiss.  But I think we're both going to be fine during our tri's!

Again, good luck and let us know how it went!

Just heard from the LBS.  I took my bike over there on my lunch hour.  He is adjusting both derailleurs and replacing the rusted cables.  I told him I didn't want to spend a lot since I'll be looking at getting a new bike this summer anyway (hopefully) and he said this would be the easiest/cheapest way to go.  After my tri I can decide what I want to do.  Even if I end up not buying a bike this year, this one will get me through for a while although he does recommend a complete tune-up if I decide to keep using it.  So I'll get off fairly cheap (about $35) and I can get it back by tonight so I'll have it for my long ride on Sunday.

***Maybe you should give your swimsuit/bike short combo a try out on the bike before the race to see if you get any chafing? ****

OK, I did my trial run this afternoon.  Biked 2 mi to the Y, swam the race distance (375), biked 3 miles home in wet swimsuit and bike shorts.  No chafing, it seemed OK.  Not comfortable (who wants to ride in a wet swimsuit?), but absolutely fine.  Funny thing was I didn't feel like I was pushing the swim at all, and I think I swam a PB of 10:30.  I know not fast for strong swimmers, but much faster than the 12 min I was expecting!

Thanks for all the encouragement, and look for my race report this Sunday!
