I joined my local Y today so I could swim. My first lap swim in about 11 years. My theory that I could always jump in a pool and swim 20 laps remains true. I guess swimming is easy for me, I'm pretty floaty. Running on the other hand is harder for me now but I'm working on it though I am afraid of injuries with running and am currently doing most of it on my elliptical.

The White Plains YMCA or YWCA?

I used to swim at both. LOL

(Although, I'm SURE they've been remodeled since I've been there. I was in high school then.)

You should see my 'running' its a slow stumble or a walk...

LOL, I bet it's still not slower than my pace!!!

While I was out there today, I kept repeating "shuffle, shuffle, shuffle."

I found the same. I can get into the pool and swim.

My problem (for the last year or so) is that my shoulder has been bothering me. It never did before though. I can't figure out if it's a stroke issue, or if I'm just getting old, or if I messed up the rotator cuff.

(Yes Cat, I know --- I need to see a doctor! But when I don't swim, it's not a problem. So I keep putting it off.)

If you really dont want to see a medical professional - how about a swim coach?

We have the Aussie version on here at the moment... I havent really engaged with it this time around like I have in the past...

Will probaly watch the finale though in a few weeks as I always like seeing the transformations... even if I dont really know the characters... well assuming its not on during a workout!

My left knee is bothering me. I will run as part of my training but I am trying to lose weight and build up strength before I start pounding on the knee.

Back in my old days of running 50 + a week when I was in my 20's it was my knee problems that eventually led to me giving it up. I plan on seeing a sports med doctor about it soon. I plan on running 2 -3 miles by about 10 weeks to go in my tri countdown which would be late May.
kaqphin - 2009-04-21 9:48 PM

Way to go on the swim - Im kind of like that too!!! The thing is if you keep it up you will be surprised at the improvements you see (plus its awesome recovery from the other workouts!)

Do you have any existing injuries that might be a problem running? The elliptical is great for general fitness and mainitaining it but unfortunatley will not really help your body adjust to the pressures of running - walking is actually probably a better option!

I watched it a bit of Biggest Loser once. While it is inspiring to see the changes, it is so unrealistic. The people are in such a bootcamp mode, I don't see how any of them could integrate their training into long term real life when the show is over.

Sorry Im back with you now - with all our injuries Im struggling a bit to still kep everyone straight!!

Yes elliptical will maintain some run fitness and time on your feet is good. HAve you looked at water running or walking as well? Does walking affect your knee?

FWIW if in doubt dont change a thing!!! Loosing weight is SO SO key with joints... less stress on the joints from weight the better... Im hoping dropping the rest of the weight will really help me with the niggly things too!!!

How are you going with the nutrition/weightloss at the moemnt?

I think I am doing well. I am trying to eat one good meal a day and two meals of 200-220 calorie bars most days. Sometimes I may have two meals. I don't weigh myself but my clothes are feeling looser and I think I will drop a size in a week or so as long as I keep it up.

Is there anything specific that you would like to focus on?

Have you ever done a food diary? Thats a great place to start... for 3-5 days or even a week just write down EVERYTHING yuo eat... by everything I mean the butter on your sandwiches, the 5 M&Ms out of a co-workers packet, the sugar and milk in your coffee...

If we know what you are eating Im sure we can make some small manageable suggestions!

We just finished that season here! I always go nuts

Fruit and yoghurt, plain fruit, grilled fruit  with yoghurt, snacks of fruit!!!

Seriously if we all just ate more fruit and less otherstuff we would all be SO much better off!!!

Also its a high GI carb so a great pre and post workout snack if yuo need it! (for the most part)

OK Dee, that's like not fixing your leaky roof when it's sunny out because you're not getting wet...  See a doctor!!  Brought to you by the guy that used to go about 5 years between doctor visits, and now gets to go to physical therapy twice a week.

I know... I cannot wait. I look at the fruit in the market, and none of it looks appealing to me. Well, maybe the mangos. The rest are either from cold storage or South America. But I know that pit-fruit season is just around the corner. We get a wide variety of plums around here, because one of the town's founding fathers was a botanist who specialized in plums and prunes. So, older homes in the area usually have at least one plum tree.  The house I used to live in had several.

Peaches are my all-time favorite fruit. I hope they're good this year. They should be, since we didn't get too much rain.

OK, enough about fruit. I went for a slow 3 mile run this evening. It really helped work out the soreness from yesterday's run and Sunday's race.

I'm desperately trying to talk myself up about my long run tomorrow. I might need some help with that one. I'm a little worried that it will be long, and hot, and more like my last long run. I know I should be spending my energy on visualizing it being pleasant and successful. I'll work on that for the rest of the evening.

Fortunately, I'm working from home tomorrow, so I can pretty much go out whenever I want.  That'll help take the pressure off.  Maybe I'll get up and automatically get dressed in my running clothes. That way, I'll feel silly just sitting around in them.

Way to go on the run today! I like the idea of getting up and putting your workout gear on... I do that on the weekends... hop straight into my lycra so even when Im not meeting anyone and Im really procrastinating... I knwo I will go or its a waste of my gear... yes a bit silly but it works!
