I started the weekend with a nice bike ride.  It was a bit tough towards the end when the winds picked up but it feels good to have it done! Happy Saturday everyone!

Good afternoon! I hope everyone's having a great weekend so far!

Yesterday I took my new clipless shoe/pedal out for a spin, and yeah, I fell 3 times.  The guy at the store had warned me that everyone experiences the "0 miles-per-hour crash" but I didn't think I'd have so many of them!  In my defense, there was a detour on the lake front path, and I stopped to try to figure out where I was and where I was going.  So each time, I was busy looking at the road or reading street signs as I was unclipping & coming to a stop.  I was able to unclip successfully each time, but stopped before I got my unclipped foot firmly on the ground. . . and fell over with only one foot clipped in.  I can't believe I did that THREE times Tongue out

I'd planned on going for a run at this morning, but woke up late.  I'll probably head out for my run soonish, but I was also planning on lifting with a friend this afternoon.  Hopefully he doesn't mind if we don't get started until 4 or something.

Tomorrow, I have a yoga class & a swim in the morning.  Then I'm planning on hitting the lake front path with my bike again in the afternoon.  Hopefully I won't fall over this time!

Quick shoutouts:
Margot - I hope you're more successful with your clipless pedals than I was!
Denise - Good luck with your half marathon!
Erin - You're welcome
Tif - Glad the study session was a success!  I hope you're catching up on some zzz's!
Lisa - That's exciting!!  I love the idea of all that technology!  I'd be interested in getting myself tested one of these days, but then I'd have to go back every few months to monitor my progress. . .
Cheryl - Sounds like a nice, quiet Friday night in

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope your Saturdays are good ones and workouts are kicking butt.

We survived the all night study session last night...Tif did an awesome job and the kids really enjoyed being there.

After a few hours of sleep we are ready to face a new day.  There is a run in the future, but first I have to get some video editing done.  I am hoping to be back on the regular sleep schedule tonight...that is why I did not sleep the entire day away (although I could have.)

Keep working hard and good luck to those who have races this weekend.

Good afternoon everyone!

Woke up this morning to rain in the Bay Area and REI wasn't finished with my bike so I went and did an hour on the spin bike at the gym. I'm bummed that my husband and I didn't get to go for our ride we were planning but next weekend the weather should be nice so we're just pushing it back a week.

It was a great workout, the first time I've really opened up and let myself go all out since I got hurt. I think I'm feeling good enough to try jogging this coming week to see how that feels.

We got back from the gym and had a message from REI that my bike was done. FINALLY! So we braved their yearly sale and went down there to pick it up.

I agree with Barb that bikes need names so let me introduce you to Roxanne.

She's definitely a starter road bike, but considering she's the first bike I've ever had with more than 3 gears I'm super duper excited! I also finally got my patch kit and frame pump so I can learn how to change a tire now. The only other update she needs is a new saddle since she's actually a men's bike (I'm too tall for the women's bikes). They ordered one for me and I should have it in a few more weeks.

Sounds like everyone is having a nice weekend so far! Enjoy!

Hey gang,
Hope all is well.  Nice couple of bikes there ladies.  Sounds like everyone's training is moving forward.

I am in Edmonton, Alberta this weekend to visit my new nephew.  He's adorable that's for sure.  I forgot how much a baby will keep you up at night.

I also found it tough to stay focused on good nutritian and excercise but I did go for a run today.  Tough to get the old engine started but once I did it felt pretty good.  I have not ran here before but I found the people on the bike path here extremely friendly.  And I mean everyone from the bikers to the runners, to the dog walkers, everyone said "hello".  At first I was a little leery but then I began to look forward to the next person I could greet.  It was nice.
Take care,
Alan

My husband and I were joking that during the race instead of singing the chorus in my head "Roxanne (put on the red light)" that I can sing "Roxanne (pedal the red bike)" I love that the bike comes with it's own mantra.

Happy Sunday Smile

I just finished a power yoga class that kicked my butt!  I haven't been going to yoga nearly as much as I would like, and it definitely shows. . . My spine felt like steel, but my upper back & hips are definitely thanking me for going to class!  I'm going to try to go to morning yoga during the week, because it makes me feel so much better after!  I have a swim planned for later on, and then lifting again with a friend (we only got through half our workout yesterday since we started so late).

Margot & Lisa- Nice wheels!!  Margot, I love that your bike already has a theme song Tongue out
Alan - I totally agree that it's harder to keep on track w/nutrition & exercise when you're out of town!  Glad you got a nice, friendly run in!

Greetings!

Just finished Week 15 of training and had a nice swim this afternoon. Today was the perfect day to be in the pool. Both legs from the knees down have been achy and a little crampy in the right calf from standing most of the all-nighter. Something about being in the water is just invigorating. Even though I was hitting 85-100% MHR, it still just felt good to be moving through the water.

I've enjoyed checking out the bike pics. I guess I'm guilty of being a bike porn addict. Laughing Nik and I are very fortunate to have a co-worker whose husband is an avid obsessive cyclist, and he offered to take care of our bikes for us. He's giving both of them a tune-up and getting everything in check. Although there's an empty spot in the garage right now, I know they are both in great hands...and they will look good and ride great come showtime. He and his wife are also making a weekend out of going to watch and help us at our tri next weekend. Our co-worker is even going to be our personal photographer on race day.

Hope the weekend has treated you all well.

Denise- Looking forward to reading about your race recap. Hopefully the weather was kind!

I've had a quiet weekend at home without the family.  Yesterday I got my bike back from the shop and went for a beautiful, hilly 12 mile ride north of town.  My arms and shoulders are sore today from the ride, but not my legs at all.  Now I daydream of a road bike.  Maybe next year.

I just got back from my 13 mile run in the cool, rain.  It was lovely.  But I was pushing my pace faster than I usually do my long runs, and now my whole body feels it.  I find these long runs make me not feel hungry.  But I know I need to eat right away to help with recovery.

The good news is my shin didn't bother me during the run.  I've got some ice on it right now, and I'll get some stretching right after that.

I didn't get any swimming done this week.  But Monday I start my tri training plan and hopefully I can be as good at sticking to it as I have been with my running plans this year.

Sounds like you've had a rewarding weekend, Dena! Good luck when you start your tri plan. How long is the program? I've had some shin issues myself, but they're pretty much in check as long as I am consistent with the ice.

I meant to share my "nightmare" in my last post, but forgot... I had a dream about my upcoming race, and everything went well...except for the fact that after I crossed the finish line I realized I did not have a timing chip. I was so devastated...especially since in my dream I rocked it! Looks like the race anxiety is subconsciously creeping up on me.

Wow, Dena!  I can hardly wrap my mind around the idea of 13 miles as a short run.    5k still feels long to me and my pace is plodding.

I dropped my swim/bike plans to spend the day out with the family.  We went to a butterfly show at the Krohn Conservatory with another family and munched the day away with picnic, snacks, and coffee.

Now we're home and the kids are contentedly stuffed with chips and cookies.  I'm getting ready for a long (for me, anyway) run of 45 minutes around the subdivision.  To hell with the laundry!

G'morning, all!

I'm less than two weeks away from my first race, and I'm already getting pumped!  To get ready for it, I have two brick workouts planned for this week. . . and the first one is tonight Surprised  So on tap for me today is a 30-min swim, followed by a 60-min bike ride.  I'll just use a spin bike at the gym that there's not too much time between getting out of the pool and hopping on the bike.  That way, I can also simulate hills by changing up the resistance on the bike periodically.  I think some of the spin bikes have clipless pedals, so I can practice using my shoes, too, without danger of falling.

I hope everyone's having a great Monday morning so far!! Smile

Yay-  Have fun on your brick tonight!

The trishop guy told me that spin bikes usually are compatible with Shimano-style clipless.  (I'm still not sure I've got the vocabulary right: clips, clipless, cleats, ???)

Good idea to practice T1 wet.  I didn't do that before my first tri.  Running out to my bike soaking wet in 40F weather was educational.  I swam in my bratop and trishorts and rolled up a tech shirt and my tri singlet dry to put on in T1.  I made a mistake, though, and rolled them under so when I pulled them over my head I ended up with a tight shirt roll glued to my armpits and shoulder blades, belly naked to the (cold) wind.  I had at least a 7 minute T1 wrestling my stupid shirt!
---------------------------------------------------
I had a great run last night, nice and cool.  I listened to a suspense novel in one ear and it really distracted me from the usual aches and pains.  I can't believe I'm actually starting to enjoy the running.  I NEVER thought that possible!  I made 3.91 miles in 45 minutes.   Maybe someday I'll even get fast!  This morning I can actually believe that.

I really enjoyed my swim this morning.  My favorite guard helped me get the data I needed for swimplan.com.  My shoulder hardly hurt at all - but I was on naprosyn, so maybe I shouldn't count that...

Monday is usually my rest day, but I'm making up for taking a rest day on Friday.  Tonight I have an hour stuck at my daughter's swim practice, so I'm planning on scoping out the high school for a run.

Oops, my wording might have been ambiguous.  13 miles is DEFINITELY a long run for me.  I was just trying to run it at a faster pace than I usually do my long runs at.  It's only the third time I've run that far.  The next time will be the half marathon in 4 weeks.  Oh, I also tried out the chocolate Gu flavor and it is yummy.  Mmm, almost like dessert.

My sprint training plan is 12 weeks long.  Today's the first day, a rest day.  I know I'll do well with training today. Laughing

Cheryl - Thanks!!  And actually something came up, and I'm lifting tonight instead.  I think I have too many lifting partners, and it's getting hard to schedule things Yell

So my brick will have to wait until Thursday, which was the day I was supposed to lift.  It would be nice to practice outdoors, but then I'd have to recruit someone to watch my stuff. . . And it's uber cold in Lake Michigan right now!  I figure as long as I get the feel for it, I won't have to make too many adjustments on race day Smile

I never thought I'd enjoy running either. . . Even now, the first mile or so is always the hardest, but once I get going, I enjoy being in my head while I'm running.

Good afternoon everyone!

It sounds like everyone got in a nice weekend of training. I'm spinning tonight again, looking forward to going hard now that I'm back to 100%.

I'm even more excited about tomorrow when I'm going to attempt to run again for the first time in almost 6 weeks. I'm going to start out on the treadmill and take it slow and see how I feel. I'm way too stupidly excited about it!

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't checked in yet...it's been a nutty few days with training and getting things taken care of at home.

Work is a bit busy today (hence my absence on this fine Monday)...but I'll be all caught up with you kids soon.

Hey everyone! I've been MIA since friday, sounds like everyone had a good weekend with some good workouts.  I biked 40 minutes on Saturday morning and it went pretty well. That is the farthest I've biked yet so I just tried to keep a steady pace.
On Sunday I ran 20 minutes and that went well, much better than I thought.  I was getting tired at the end and I kept saying positive words to myself and it really helped.  I felt so good after accomplishing my run and pushing myself through the times when I was tired or had a cramp.  I was on a mini-vacation to Kelleys Island and I must admit I had a few too many island drinks each night so I was worried about being motivated to workout much less performing well.  So I was pretty happy.

Today I ran 13 min. and biked 26.  They both went pretty well. I listened to a book while I ran and it made the time go by so fast! I was surprised how much I liked it because I love my workout playlist so much.

Today I got a new swim cap and a knee strap.  I'm hoping that will help with my stiff knee. I think I might have some tendonitis.  I'm icing after every run and that helps a ton.

Does anyone every use those foam rollers for sore muscles? I'm thinking about getting one.  I've used one before when I had bursitis and it worked great.

Happy monday everyone!

Well, After 2 rest days I ran my 8km and was 12 seconds slower than last year. Oh well there is always another run with a time to beat. Missed my swim yesterday and short run so will probably get to the pool tonight (and maybe run there and back).

I also just bought a bike and have dropped her off at the bike shop to get tuned up. I bought it on Craigslist am excited to get out on some long rides. Last year I did a few spints with a mountain bike so I am hoping my times will be less this year with the  new bike.
I would like to introduce you to Betty.

I'm back from TN.  We had a nice trip even though it was hard to go through a second funeral.  It was fun to see my husband's family again.  They are such a hoot.  Southern men really know how to tell stories.  And my son got to have his first sleep over.  Several of his cousins, ages 4-11, had a gathering.  Aunt Jo is a saint.

I love Southern cooking but it will take several days to de-toxify.  It tastes delicious but is so greasy.

I was pleased that I was able to get 2 short runs in while we were there.  The first was fine but a little warm & humid.  The second was cool & humid.  It was cut short though because twice dogs came running out into the road and I quickly turned around.  This was out in the country, no leash laws.

I'm hoping this week will be normal with plenty of training.  I agreed to do a 7.5 mi trail run with my sister-in-law in 2 weeks.  Yikes.

Looks like everyone else is doing pretty good.  Injuries are healing and such.  Let's keep up the good work.
