In for a gentlemans bet? PennState - 2010-08-19 9:09 PM Hey Josh, James, what's the fastest BT bike split at Savageman? (just making conversation) I'll guess that it's not held by the BTer with the fastest overall finish time. Of course I'll still be swimming when you guys hit the wall, so I won't talk too much smack. What wheels are you guys riding? All this time I've been confused!!! Gentleman's bet proposal: - fastest bike split get's a 6 pack of choice from all others in on the gentleman's bet. - fastest bike split must chug 1 of those beers for every three minutes he finishes overall behind each beer purchaser. So if Fred has fastest bike split, beats Tasr overall by 7 minutes, but loses overall to me by 4 minutes, he much chug one beer. No biggie. But if Tasr has the fastest overall bike split but loses to me by 8 minutes (2 beers) and to Fred by 11 minutes (3 beers), he must chug 5 beers. This rewards fastest bike split, but I think recognizes those other 2 parts of the tri that we all know don't matter. Apologies in advance that all my examples had me finishing first overall... I was just trying to be historically accurate. 1. That’s pretty confusing imo! 2. I only drink NA 3. I guess I’ll just have too bet everybody to stay sober. |

Regular 156 Annapolis, MD | Subject: RE: Savageman HIM : Official Thread Just got back from riding the course today. Been two years since I rode it last. First time I got to see my brick in person..pretty cool...can't wait to see how the wall will look in 10 years. Lots of riders out, many more than cars. Initital thoughts are that the descent to Westernport on the new surface is dicey...will not be surprised if there are some crashes there this year. Keep it cool going down this road. Also, even though my fitness is better than it was two years ago, it still hurts...ALOT... you just go faster. Satisfied with the ride however..3:32, almost 45 minutes quicker than the two times I rode it in 2008 using the exact same equipment. Looking forward to the race. |

Nice job Jeff - sorry I couldn't make it... stupid bike shop! The last time I rode the course, this is what happened to me (I'm featured at 25ish seconds in)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MngRxJHRLs4&feature=player_embedded Not featured was the woman lying in a heap on the right side of the wall that forced me to go left (all my successes in practice had been far right). Anyway, I got business to attend to. |

Anyway, I got business to attend to. No worries...plenty of others there to ride with, although as soon as we hit the Wall the group broke up...was like a TDF mountain stage...the Wall, Otto (this road is a stepsister to Killer Miller but IMO should not be taken lightly...its a beast), KM and other climbs separating the sheep from the goats. BTW - I have always gone left up the Wall. Wondering if our respected race director can give his opinion on the best line up this "hill". |

Master 3546 Millersville, MD | Subject: RE: Savageman HIM : Official Thread I, and everyone I've ever talked to except Jeff, have always said bee-line it up the far right side. I do know some others who think that snaking up it is the best technique (if you can corner on a dime). |

Master 2621 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: Savageman HIM : Official Thread 2009 I went straight up the right side about 2 feet from the curb. I did hit one hole and the front end popped up. I think the grade is slightly higher but the condition much better. No wiggle room if someone decides to cut you off. It will probable will be my strategy this year as well. |

First year was most comical when no one knew what was coming.... Luckily I have a sledgehammer to take care of any smooth bits and a hose to keep it slick...... I think the biggest challenge for me is navigating the other riders. My AG when off last in 2009 so there was some traffic on the hill.
It still is fun and will test your bike handling skills. There is much more to it than riding up the right side. |

First year was most comical when no one knew what was coming.... Luckily I have a sledgehammer to take care of any smooth bits and a hose to keep it slick...... The Wall, The Wall, The Westernport Wall... Phooey! That's just a distraction. It's just a quick punch in the gut to distract you from the full on body slam that is to come. Damn! I rode the course yesterday and felt like I was in an Escher drawing; a complete loop that climbs the whole way. You start climbing in the parking lot at the beach and don't stop. Ever. Even the downhills are hard with all that loose gravel and cracked asphalt. It didn't help that my front derailleur decide to not drop down into the smallest of my triple. I dismounted twice to manually move it but spent the majority of my climbs in 42 front and 26 rear. Ouch. I think I'm going with a 34/50 compact and 12-28 cassette on race day. I may want that 34-28 combo for the Wall and the next few miles. |

118 | Subject: RE: Savageman HIM : Official Thread It was a surprise only in that there was no history, so even with warning people were still caught off guard. But, the Wall was well advertised and folks were told they could go around, which in the first year a lot of people did. Nowadays, almost no one goes around. |

Either way I plan to be there for the Oly, either race it or aid station. |

The 30.0 is going to win the which-race-sells-out-first battle and soon. Just 14 to go. Good description of the 30.0 bike course on slowtwitch: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=2961164 |

Veteran 344 | Subject: RE: Savageman HIM : Official Thread Good description of both courses. I'll take issue with the down-play of the Wall and the subsequent climb after. You don't climb the wall w/o rigorous training. Heck, just walking up the Wall would put most average Joe's on a respirator... It does stir up some desire to ride the Oly after the half ....but definite pass on the double...just sayinn |
