Hi everybody.  My name is Scott, I'm new to BT, new to tri and new to this group.  Thanks Phil for letting me in.   I guess this is my short newbie bio.  I love to cycle and swim and just started running two months.  I watched my first Ironman on ABC when I was around 12-years-old, 1980 or so.  To say the least, I was awestruck.  I spent 7 years in the USMC as a scout swimmer, earning the Combat Action Ribbon in Somolia during the Battle of Mogandishu (Blackhawk Down).  I used my GI Bill and studied photojournalism at the University of Arizona in Tucson.  I interned with the Chicago Sun-Times Newsgroup and made my way back to Arizona  2 years ago.  I now work for a local paper here in southern Arizona.  I love my career, so much that I have dedicated the last 15 years of my life to it.  I have been cycling for 10 years, daily for the last 2 years.  Tucson is a great place to live and train and a very bicycle friendly community.  I love to exercise, it's a long story, but I believe it keeps my head on straight.  I'm doing my first sprint tri on March 21st at the UofA in Tucson.  Since joining BT I have met so may nice people, people willing to help and get me started.  Even Phil, he didn't have to let me in this mentor group.  Thanks Phil.   I'm looking forward to this group and learning all  can.  I'm new and have no idea what I'm doing.  I just cycle, swim and run.
Thanks everybody,
Scott

Thanks so much, and thanks for sharing.  I can't remember the last time I met so many people who were all so kind.  It's a great feeling to share a common intrest with a whole sub-culture.  Nice meeting you.

Hi everyone sorry I haven't posted in a bit.

Monday flew to Pittsburgh from Cortez, CO for work. So I didn't get a workout in did jog on the hotel dreadmill Tuesday night 4 miles and road there exercycle Wed. morning for 21.  I have  really don't like jogging on the treadmill as I cann't relax and just jog but I feel crappy when I go more than a day without doing something.  Got home last night and it should have been a run day but riding my trainer at home was way easier than driving back into town so it was the trainer or nothing.  Ran 4 miles on the indoor track at the rec center this morning (hard to keep track of the laps 16/per mile and I can only count to 3 j/k).

Did spend several minutes catching up on the post and glad to see all the activitySmile.

Oh I did sign up for the Desert Classic Duathlon so my swimming has temporarily taken a set back as I want to try to make sure I can at least my first attempt at a race.

momtolucylilly - 2010-01-14 9:47 PM Brentrolf - WAY TO GO!!! Those food battles are way harder for me too. I say announce every victory! Like for instance...this lovely woman at my church made me a 3-layer, made from scratch red velvet cake with cream cheese icing for my birthday on Tuesday.....I immediately cut it in half and sent it with my husband to a meeting. I had one piece every day (with my husband and kids munching on it also), invited a friend over and shared some with her....and now it's gone...finally!  You may be thinking "one piece every day?! PIGGY!!!"  But 6 mos ago I would have REFUSED to send it with my husband and ate that thing for breakfast, lunch, dinner AND snacks...lol.  Needless to say, I was pretty proud of myself. So I say, celebrate the food victories right along with the training victories...they go hand in hand Laughing

YEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Taking control of the diet is one of the biggest battles.......we have to make choices everyday..the GOOD NEWS is that WE control those choices....no one forces us. So proud of you!

Hey everyone...sad news here in Philadelphia. I just learned that the race director for the 'Tri for our Veterans' race (http://seaisletriathlon.blogspot.com/) has died. This is a sprint tri in Sea Isle City, NJ and was the first tri I ever completed back in 2008.  It was a life changing moment for me and I will never forget it.

Unfortunately, Matt, the race director decided to take his own life in a selfish act of suicide. I was not friends with Matt but I did meet him twice at the race in 2008 and 2009. He leaves behind a wife and 3 young children. I understand he was having some marital strife and decided that it couldn't be repaired.

Matt created a race that supports injured Veterans. I couldn't agree more with his cause and it was truly inspirational watching the injured Marines of Semper Fi race beside us. I recall during the first race there was a Marine missing his legs below the knee and was running down the beach with his Marine 'escorts'...the determination and dedication to finishing have stuck with me to this day and it brings tears to my eyes as I write this thinking of this young man's sacrifice. I promised myself that day that I will NEVER take my health for granted and that I can overcome obstacles. This young man overcame so much more that nothing I could worry about now could match up.

From Matt's blog:

We raised $35,000 this year at Tri for Our Veterans II. THANK YOU! I sent off a check for $17,000 to The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, The VFW took the other $17,000 for the new Veterans' Memorial in Sea Isle, and we left $1,000 in the fund for start up capital-- afterall, Tri for Our Veterans' III is only 10 months away!

See you soon and thank you for all of your help. Through racing, you have helped our brave men and women of the US Armer Forces.

Suicide is a selfish act and all my prayers and thoughts go to Matt's family. I wish it could be different. I am registered for the race this year and hope that it's not the last because even though Matt struggled and ultimately took his life, he has touched others in ways he probably never imagined. I wish I could have talked to him and said "Hey, man, things get better. There's more to life and this too shall pass. You've changed my life for the better along with so many others. Think of that, your daughters and your family. We need you to stick around and help all of us change our lives and touch others."

I didn't get the chance.

I share this because I want to remind myself  (and everyone here) that 99% of life is small stuff...the good stuff is family, friends and doing something you love. Find your 'muse' and follow it. Kiss the wife/husband/spouse..kiss the kids...kiss the dog/cat/fish...remember our time here is short and fragile. Tell everyone how much you care and be a friend to all, even when they don't return the favor.

Have a good weekend everyone and remember, life is good.

Phil

To everyone struggling with weight & eating issues...we all have this to some degree. I exercise so I can have the food I like, but still in moderation.

Have a birthday in a couple days, so we are going to ah "birthday dinner" tonite. Having lamb, risotto, red wine (probably too much!). I will be up in the morning for my long to burn it off!

All that being said, when i was at Costco picking up the lamb, briefly looked at the cheesecake & thought that might be nice for dessert, but reconsidered! I have worked too hard & am not going back to that.

As Phil said, we all make choices. I try make mine to suit my desires, but it is always in the back of my mind!

I'm sorry to hear about Matt.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, especially his children.  Here I am all concerned about my 5k this morning, I log on and read about Matt.  I cannot help but to think of his children.   My thoughts and prayers are with them.  I did the 5K this morning.  Medaled in my age group 40-44, 3rd place @ 29:30.   My running is horrible, I need to improve on this.  Then I think about Matt's children......Running is not important, Tri in not important, it means nothing.  I will hold my 5-year-old daughter tonight and tell her how very much I love her.

GoGoGo and all you guys up north are just HARDCORE.  I HATE the cold with a passion. I'll take a 95 degree 70% humidity day over a 30 deg day any time..  I'd never make it up there with you guys winter would drive me nuts... Hell its drizzling rain and 40 here today and I wont go outside to run LOL!!!

I did a 5 mile Treadmill run yesterday afternoon and plan to go to the Y and check out swimming this afternoon.  The rain shoud be gone tomorrow and I'll go for a long run bout noon.

That is great man Congrats!!!   If it makes you feel better I have been working through some Medical issues.  Last year I found out i had asthma and last week finaly got a long term inhailer that seems to be helping.  Anyway im 41 and back in 2006 I ran a 5k in 21:30 today It is a strugle to break under 35 minutes.  I always took it for granit that I could run pretty fast even out of shape I could get my speed  back really quick if I ran for a few weeks.  Not so anymore I'm working for every second now and am in constant disblief of how slow I am now.  If I ever manage to get my fitness back in the zone of 7 minute miles again I'll never take it for granit again.  Of course if I don't I'll just be happy that I can run on my own no matter how fast it is....  More to life than being fast...

Thanks William.  I'm with you.  In the Corps (20-27 yr. old) I was running average 21:00-22:00.  Wow, how things change!   All those years of smoking and drinking (hellraisin') finally caught me.  I'm done though, been clean a few years now.  Really need to work on my running and dropping some more weight.  There was no Clydsdale group today, but I could have been in it.  Thanks for sharing.

Phil,

Just read last two pages of the forum to catch up.  When I hit the story about Matt, I stopped cold.  Heart aches when I hear something like.  I was considering doing the Sea Isle City race this year but it didn't work with my schedule.

On a training note I have passed several tests on the diet front.  Had a business dinner with many bottles of wine and a lot of steak and desert.  Now I did partake in a filet, but I also stayed away from the dessert and all the wine that was served.  On the flip side of that.  I went out with my wife, friend and his wife.  Both are very pregnant.  I didn partake in a bit of vino last night but not a lot.  Overall I've been good in staying away from carbs unless they are low glycemic one's.  I'm a carb addict and use to just eat a ould of pasta for dinner.

In any event, my workouts are still focused on wight trainging and cardio.  I do my back to back Spin Class follow by WP&G tomorrow morning.  Pool on Monday.  As of last week, I'm officially tipping the scales now at 262.  Slow and steady wins the race.  I'm sure things are moving slowly due to the amount of lifting I've been doing.  I'm trying to creat a strong build on my rather large frame.  Then plow throught the SBR with more high repetition driven lifting sessions and circuits.

Even though I have a sprint and olympic distrance try this summer. I still have my eye on the prize which is the Half IM in Austin on October 17th.  I can see the plan in my head over the mext 9 months.  I'm so looking forward to crossing that finish line.  THat will make for a great 40th birthday.

And Phil,  I beleive you told me that your BDay is the day after the NJ Olympic.  I will have to make sure we meet at some point and especially toast the end of the race at the beer garden they have post race.

Best to all.

Phil B

Well everyone I regestered for 5k on February 20.. so, wish me luck..... But, Best part is they have a 1 mile kids division so I registered my son also, He is 6.  Best part is I get to cheer him on.
I know I can finish the race no problem but not sure if I should set a time goal or just do my best.  Tonight at the track I set a new PR of 32.24 5k back in September I couldn't even run the whole 5k distance and when I could My first times were in the 40 minute range.   SOOOO do you guys think if I work these next 3 weeks hard and taper the last week I can break 30:00 or should I just go run without a time goal???

Want an honest opinion?

I would not for time, I would just run. 2.5 mins faster in a 5k, is a lot. For me, half a minute in a 5k is a lot. If you don't achieve, you disappoint yourself.

I would just run, give it a good effort & see what happens... If you do break it, great. Have fun, cheer your son on, celebrate the finishing of your first race in a long time. Finish upright, smiling & proud & head high. Not disappointed with some preconcieved time. When you do a few more races, there will be plenty of time, for worrying about PR's.

Just my opinion, but I'm afraid, not what you want to hear!

Anyway Good Luck & be sure to report back!

R

PS. I did one of these races with my son, when he was 5. He still has a little finishers medal & was very proud. He ran 1km. He had no idea how far the run was. For his next, I would try & give him a concept of the distance, so he doesn't sprint, thinking it is 100yd dash. It is hard to explain to someone that young, but might be useful.

PPS. You will not need much taper for a 5k. I would keep running until a day or 2 prior. Many don't taper for 5's at all.

Good run Scott. Thats not bad. If you want to go faster, you will. Don't be down on yourself....

Phil, hate to hear about your friend. I can relate to this as I had a similar situation 5 years ago with a friend of the family. I would like to pull him out of that hole and slap the crap out of him for doing what he did....

Broonsky, keep it up. Nice job on the weight loss. I KNOW it is not an easy thing. I have spent the past 18 months working on mine. I was almost 300 pounds early last year. Unreal.

I was up early this Sunday morning. Couldn't sleep so I headed down to the basement at 4:30 for an 80 mid ride on the bike. Keep a very consistent pace for today. Just a few sprints. Still working on my base obviously. I only started my actual "triathlon training" program a few weeks ago but I have been on a major weight loss plan for 18 months and have been doing a ton of cardio exercises. My heart rate on the bike is low. It takes a good amount of power for me to get my heart rate up to 140. I know thats a good thing so now I need to get that problem with my run. Haha.....Of all three of the disciplines, I hate the run. I dont know why but I have always loved to ride and swim but always hated to run... I am starting to enjoy it more but It is still my least favorite...

I have a "Core" strength training workout planned for this afternoon. I have one hour per week planed for Core, one hour for strength training and 1.5 hours per week scheduled for Yoga. I think I am broke in now and this week, I will start my actual training bricks instead of just riding and running. Wish me luck.

I am also considering the "IMG" Half marathon in late March. This event is local here and is almost two solid months before my HIM. I think it will be a good thing to get me ready for my HIM. I have a friend who I work with that is doing it and I will start running with him some this week. We are close on times and I would like to complete it. No time goals...

You guys have a great Sunday

Ryan

Well got my long run in today. 24k in the books. Toughest run in a while...-10c, blowing snow, generally miserable. Hilly course & traction poor, despite it all, got it done. Still trying to warm up! Oh well, that's a Canadian winter.

LanierSpots - 2010-01-17 8:29 AM[QI am also considering the "IMG" Half marathon in late March. This event is local here and is almost two solid months before my HIM. I think it will be a good thing to get me ready for my HIM. I have a friend who I work with that is doing it and I will start running with him some this week. We are close on times and I would like to complete it. No time goals...

You guys have a great Sunday

This is a great idea. This is the distance you will need to run for a half iron. Will give you a good idea of your fitness.

Ryan - you know that your max hr/LT on the bike is different from the run right?  So 140 bpm on the bike is not the same as 140 bpm on the run.  Now, I don't know how they relate beyond the fact that max hr/LT is usually lower on the bike.

One of my subgoals for the spring is to do a LT heart rate test for the run so that I can set my goals up correctly.  Right now I have a "best guess" which is another word for "wrong"
