But, 11 year old saddle could be a pain in the butt. Silver Bullet - 2010-01-12 9:05 PM I think I need a new seat on my bike. It's an 11-year-old bike, the seat is original, and it doesn't adjust. At all. I got tools and tried. It comes off the bike, and it goes back on the bike. That's it. Time to start saving up. I shouldn't have to pick between my bike and my sex life. |

Art: glad plumbing etc is all over, welcome back I've had a bit of a setback too actually, well a collection of them. I'm still at home with poxy son, so thought I'd clean the carpets (because I'm selling my house, I hate cleaning), and unfortunately I slightly prolapsed a disc in my back while doing this. Have done this before quite a few too many times (3 caesarians not so good for backs) so hoping it will only put me out for a little bit, but it really makes time on the bike difficult. I've also developed some pain in my foot and ankle after yesterday's run and cut and bruised my foot also... oh well, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger and all that.. Anyway... tomorrow I'm going to work!!! (Have been mostly at home since 19 December and sooo need some adult company).. I hope everyone's training and lives are going a little more productively than mine Melyssa |

Thanks! Another late work day. Looks like I'm going to have to rearrange my schedule.... Sounds like we're all struggling to get workouts in for one reason or another. I shouldn't have to pick between my bike and my sex life. But ... you ARE picking your bike, right ... right? There are a few ways to get saddles on the cheap. Find a bike shop that has a saddle return policy. Try a likely one out. Straight up good but cheap is the Serfas Rx Women's Saddle at $45. If that doesn't work, try a more expensive likely one. Then get the same one used or cheap one off Ebay, or ask me for cheap bike/tri websites where you're likely to find a discount. I'm willing to bet that nobody, at least in their first year, managed to do triathlon more cheaply than me. Well--almost no one. There's always one guy out there with a $10 mountain bike! |

I hope it was good going back to work--being cooped up with sick kids is no fun! Also, you helped me remember something when you mentioned foot pain ... Everybody has proper running shoes, right? Not cross-trainers from a few years back that you dusted off and brought out again? I mean, running shoes that you bought from a running store where one of the people carefully watched you walk or better yet run, and then brought out several different pairs for you to try, which you did? And actually ran in? |

Extreme Veteran 552 Wesley Chapel, Florida | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's 2010 Manatees--Closed Missy, that stinks! Maybe focus on swim while you rehab your back? I really hope you cut a break soon! I was supposed to meet my BT swim buddy this morning, but once again, it was too cold for the pool to open. I did, however, go for a 3 mile run instead. Really glad for that. I've decided that as an interim training goal, I am going to run a 10K in February. I am thinking/hoping that increasing my run volume will help me with general endurance as well as eventually help with my 5K speed, both of which should help when I do my first sprint Tri in May. So far, my longest run is around 4 miles. I am really antsy to get in the pool now -- I have a lot of work to be able to conquer swim, and I need to get cracking. |

Grrr on the brrr for the pool. Excellent goal. Make sure to increase your run volume SLOOOWLY. I'm in a real pickle as far as training goes. Monsoon season is here in the tropics and it rains, like blinding rain, for hours. Now, I'm crazy. I'll run (not bike--traffic too dangerous) in that ... but not when there's lightning, which there almost always is. No indoor pools here. Ha, that's a funny thought. There can't be an indoor pool in all of Indonesia ... and the oceans are perpetually disgusting from all the runoff and sewage washed out in the rain. There's a gym nearby, but it's ridiculously expensive. Like, prohibitively expensive. Well, where there's a will, there's a way. I keep trying to think! |

You may want to occasionally take a short part of a run on sand to build up the ankle stability and get used to the feeling. - A mile in SAND? Really? You guys are tough! |

Extreme Veteran 552 Wesley Chapel, Florida | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's 2010 Manatees--Closed Yanti, are there pools at all, or are all of your swims open water? Do you have any access to a treadmill at all? I guess it just goes to show that even living in paradise has its ups and downs. So question, Manatees. is it crazy for me to attempt to go from running 5Ks (my longest run so far has been 4 miles) to running a 15K by the end of February? There's a popular local race that I would love to be a part of, but it's 5K or 15K, and I really want to go for the longer one if I can just because I think that adding run volume will help with both speed and endurance for my tri/5K time. Recall my sprint Tri that I am aiming for is the first weekend of May. My tentative training plan starting next week is to swim T/Th, run W/F/Sun and Bike Sat/Mon. My goal for the 15K would just be to run the whole thing without stopping, no matter how slow. I figure I could add a mile a week to my long runs and be at 9 miles by the weekend before the race, if I am counting right. |

Going to "work" was blissful... dropped off all the kids, bought myself some goggles, went to the outdoor heated salt water pool by the ocean, swam a km, ran down the beach and back for half an hour, then kicked back with a coffee... THEN went to work!! Checked my email then went to my favourite clothing shop which had a massive sale and I had a gift voucher to find I'd dropped two sizes since i was last there. HEAVEN!! trust me I needed this day And my back is improving already yay!! Yanti, yes I did get fitted with proper running shoes when i started, but my right ankle hurts, probably because I'm still ten pounds over what I consider running weight. Is running on sand better or worse for that? Lynne, sorry you are still feeling rotten, sending healing thoughts your way. Dineen, glad your running at least is going well. Ive been working out this week, some cardio work out and walk/run thing too. Running is tough. Its just hard to believe that I could get better at running when it can be so discouraging! You guys are all much more experienced than me. Also I had to drop out fat rabbit sprint tri because it conflicted another commitment (going out of state) So I signed up for one earlier in June instead of end of June. But this time I signed up for a duathlon. I thought maybe I could just focus on running and biking for now and then if I can do it! I will sign up for Tri afterwards and focus on swimming as well. What do you guys think? Do you think a spinning class would help or regular excercise bike will work fine? Anyone here experienced the duathlon? This one is just a sprint, 3.11 mi run and 12 some mi biking and 3.11 mi run. Its nothing BIG but I am concerned how my legs may feel like lead?! its already feeling lead and I havent gone 1 min running nonstop! haha. I am going out for walk/run today at lunch. My goal is to try everyday during lunch if I can. Thanks! Marcea |

You still need to ride, too, but I would recommend spinning once a week or so. |

IMO - You might be able to do it but that's a big jump in running in 6 weeks on top of the rest of your training. You're really going to need to listen to your body as you increase the volume. You don't want to sacrifice your race in May for that 15K. Don't let me discourage you though, you can do it if you're careful. Art |

Its just hard to believe that I could get better at running when it can be so discouraging! You guys are all much more experienced than me. Marcea, not that much more experienced! I started from nothing in September, at least 25lb overweight after third baby, couldn't run at all! Greenpeace probably would've tried to rescue me if I swam... I started on the treadmill in the gym just jogging one minute at a time, walking in between. People actually laughed when I told them i was going to do a triathlon. (okay admittedly i don't have a bike or swimwear..) But each time I trained I just got a little better and a little fitter, and did my first tri in December, finished middle of the pack, ie not last where I expected to be! Compare with today, when I went for a run with a (beginner obviously) tri training group, and we ran for almost an hour, in sand, little hills etc and I was quite comfortable... never would've believed I could come so far in 4 months. I just fitted in what training I could when I could, even if it was just a twenty minute run or ride. you can do it! and it does get easier it even gets, believe it or not, enjoyable in a kind of addictive way. Extreme Veteran 552 Wesley Chapel, Florida | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's 2010 Manatees--Closed MArcea, I agree with Missy -- I am not that far ahead of you at all! I started running in September too, and that first time I went out I could barely, barely manage to run for 60 second intervals with a 90 second walk break in between. BARELY. I am basically starting at ground zero for the swim, and I started spinning a few weeks ago, 1x per week, and still can't do all of the standing climbs, though there is improvement. Also, I've lost 14 pounds since Sept (w00t!) but I still have about 35-40 to go to be at a decent weight, and then I will still be Athena. In fact, it will take me 23 pounds to get out of Clyde range. So I am very much a beginner! At this early stage, ask questions and take pleasure in the incrimental changes. Art, thanks for your advice. I posed the question a couple of other places, too, and my darling husband's faith in me aside (he just ran his first Marathon last weekend and is on a runner's high, methinks!), I have come to a better conclusion that running the 5K at that race, but training like I am going to run a 10K, would be better for me - double instead of triple my volume, and hopefully add some speed in the process. Much saner. |

Extreme Veteran 396 Eastern Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's 2010 Manatees--Closed I had a nice run this morning. The weather was a little cloudy and temps. in the low 30's with no wind, so it was mild for this time of year. I was playing with my ipod and missed a turn. No, I didn't stop for directions (I'm the guy, remember). I wasn't sure where the next road was or where it would take me but decided I would find out. If it was too far, I'd just turn around. Turns out it was only another half mile and it brought me to the road that put me back on course. At about 4-1/2 miles I realized I was going at a good pace (for me anyway), with good form (for me anyway) and had that "I love running" moment that doesn't happen very often for me. I got home tired but happy. It reminded me why I do this stuff. Have a great weekend! Art |

Glad the route worked out and especially that you got that feeling....that runner's high, I guess we call it. That's what gets me out of the house for a run everytime. I love just being with my footsteps and my breathing and my music or podcasts. Just wanted to check in with everyone. Seems like a lot of you are starting this for the first time. Congratulations. It really can and does become a lifestyle. Stick with it, you won't regret it. Or, at least I don't think you will. |
