Cozmo--sweet ride. I've got an Orbea Orca. I really wanted an Ordu when I was shopping for TT bikes, but couldn't afford it. Let me know how you like the Ora.

Great Bike Cozmo!  I bet you can't wait for nice weather.  I have been trying to hit the trainer on my new bike but am chomping at the bit for the ice mess to go away.

As for wetsuits, last year I bought a Zoot full and they feel a little tight when their dry on you but once you are in the water, they feel very natural.  I also like the buoyancy.

Went for a ride on the Orbea today. I still need to get fitted but it seems to feel really good. I took wrenches and adjusted things along the ride. It felt like I didn't even do anything after 21 miles! The weather here is pretty good. The high today was around 80 but rain is coming so maybe no ride tomorrow.

Justin, here is the picture of my new tri bike you asked about.  Unfortunately, I only have trainer miles on it so far.

Has anybody tried the retul bike fitting system? It seems neat but I wonder if the fitter will focus too much on data and less on what the rider needs.

Bret's (bmason) master's swim coach has him playing golf in the pool.  I think this is a great idea for us to challenge each other a bit.  We will have to find out how to average out everyone's pool lengths (some are 25 yards and others are 25 meters) but it can be done.

Here is the challenge for this week.  The lowest score for 500 meters.  Rules:

  • Swim 10 X 50 meters/yards
  • keep track of time for each 50
  • count strokes both directions
  • add all time and all strokes together for a final score

Anybody in?  Report results next Friday or as you complete your swim.

I can usually multi-task with the best of them....until it comes down to the pool......I can either count laps or I count strokes.  I lack the ability to do both.

Seriously!  I'm an engineer, and I don't think I could do that!  Haha!  I might try, but my swims are Tue and Wed.

I'll try to get our swim coach to do 10x50 golf. Last time he did 7x50. In the middle of our workout. I was running between 26-27 strokes per 50 and total score of 78-79 per 50 concentrating on glide more than speed. It is a great drill.

Well... I feel kind of bad skipping today BUT I did go get a mount for my bike computer and installed it for a big ride tomorrow.

I also found this guy with dinner! Sorry for being a little off-tri topic!

What do most guys here wear in the pool? I was talking to somebody at the bike shop and he said he wore his tri shorts but just rinsed them afterwards everytime. I guess the chlorine will not hurt them? I always see "don't wear these in a chlorine pool" on alot of gear. I really need to build up my swimming chops!!!!!!

Just wanted to share that today I did my first 50 miler on the bike.  Probably not the best day to do it, since the wind was in my face (and strong) on all the up-hill sections, which equates to about 30 of the 50 miles.  Anyway, it was pretty hard for me.

I learned a lot about fuel and hydration.  I didn't have quite enough of that stuff with me, and I figured I could just tough through it, but....when the fuel ran out, I felt it big time.  The last 8 to 10 miles were pretty rough.

So, now I'm a little scared of the HIM.  I can tell you that today there was NO WAY I could have run 13.1 following that ride.  I'm hoping that on the day of the race there's less wind and I have figured out the fuel and hydration discipline....because if not, I won't finish.

The memories of today's ride will help me stay motivated to get out of bed in the mornings.  Fear is the best motivator, I hear.

clewis38,

On fuel / hydro do you plan on doing the whole 50 miles with what you start with on the bike or stopping at aid stations for the HIM?

I haven't made up my mind yet on that.  Some people have told me to take all my own fuel so that I know it'll work for me.  Others have said that most races have the most common items - such as Gatorade, Gu, Hammer Gels, etc - so you can use theirs.  I guess I need to find out from the race organizers what they will be using and try those products out.  What has your experience taught you on that?

Today was just an example of doing it wrong.  I had only one Hammer Gel with me.  I was hoping that two granola bars would make up the difference, but obviously they don't have the same engineering as those power shots.  I think I also need to have more Gatorade with me.  I had two bottles, and they ran out before I was done.  Cold day, but still, I needed more.

Can't wait to try it again with more fuel on board.

An event should show what they have at the different aid stations on its website. I think Ironman uses gatorade and powerbar products so I doubt I will use any of that. The Thrive diet book I have actually has recipes for making gels and bars using whole foods. I have not made any yet but they seem to look very good.

As for drinks on the bike / run I think some races give you bottles and they have a 'drop area' to throw them in and you call out what you want entering the station. I don't know because I have only done bike races and they just had stops to fill up water bottles.

I wonder if you could even be having a sugar crash with gatorade. I have been trying heed from using gatorade for a bit and I don't get that super sweet taste / high and it lasts longer.

IM branded races will have Gatorade and PowerBar/PowerGel.

As for how to fuel, even if you use your own stuff, you can at least get water from the aid stations.  I have raced with my own fuel and what is provided on the course.  Gatorade works for me, which makes it much easier for HIM/IM races.  On the bike I tend to bring my own Honey Stinger Chews (YUM!) along with Fig Newtons and then live off the course for the run.

Practice and figure out what works for you.  If you can live off what the course offers, it's just one less thing to have to think about.  Just keep in mind that if you only like 1 flavor of PowerGel or GU, chances are that won't be the flavor of choice on the course

Nice eagle picture, Cozmo!

I like to be prepared for what's out on the course.  I typically drink water or a water/gatorade mix.  I stopped to grab 'gatorade' during the run section of my first tri, and almost threw the stuff back up.  It wasn't gatorade, it was Heed.  Bleh.

Cozmo--nice photo. The eagle has a coot in its talons.

I wear just the run of the mill swimming suit. It creates a lot of drag but makes me feel fast when I do wear my tri shorts or suit.

I am wondering here. What do people like better... Gatorade, Powerade, Heed, or something else and why do you like it?

I have been through a few buckets of gatorade but I just feel better with Heed now. No over sweet robust flavor and I always feel good.

Heed is also great for hangovers with me!
