croixfan - 2010-04-14 5:54 PM Hey guys, John mentioned that he does yoga on a regular basis.  I do some yoga based stretching as well.  What do the rest of you do to keep the muscles loose?

I really like Yoga.  I usually do the P90x version at home.  I really want to do some classes.  Ryan Leech will be leading classes in the morning at the Sea Otter.

ART.  Active Release Technique performed by a chiropractor.  Very helpful post ITBS-Piriformisis.

Stretching.

Foam Roller.  Highly recommend the foam roller.

I may have mentioned this before... but I do a 'Couples Yoga' class once a month with Wifey.  It's kind of a date afternoon/night thingy.  Although I really dig the results, I have to honestly say the only reason I do it is to win extra 'kitchen passes' for more training and time out with the boyz.  Also, out here... the SDFD Wellness Group has been endorsing PX90 & YogaX.  We have been playing with both as well as CrossFit.  My feeling is the more I stretch the better... and not cuz' I'm a little older.

I don't do any yoga, or any kind of stretching at all, aside from a few minutes of static stretching right after a run.

Here's a few pictures of my road bike.  Well, as road as I get right now anyway.  My parents gave me this bike when I went to college in 1988...  Those panniers can carry a LOT of gel Tongue out

First pic is where I had the rollers setup when I was learning how to use them, in between a wall and our bed.  Wife didn't think that was a good spot...

Second pic is me on the rollers in the backyard.

Interesting... Both of you reference the P90X program.  Do you use the entire program or just the yoga?  If you use, how / how often?  My understanding is that it alone is an hour a day.  Would find it difficult to mix this in with the swim/bike/run.

AOTD:  I use an HRM religiously.  I have a garmin 705 for my bikes and I also have a Polar Cs200 that I put in my pocket while I run and use at the gym on any compatible gym equipment.

I struggle with this a lot.  I ride with a friend who happens to race elite in WORS MTB series.  He's always giving me trouble because my HR doesn't get high enough before I give out.  My max HR is 201.  I can get there when I run pretty easy and can easily run at 180+.  For some reason, on the bike I have a lot of trouble getting over 170.  I've been as high as 187 but most of the time I need REALLY fresh legs and huge amount of time to build to 170+.  Last night I road 33 miles of hills and couldn't get over 163.  I tend to throw in the towel before I can get to my max.  Some people seem to just get there so quick it makes me sick.  I'm afraid I may be leaving some performance un tapped by not being able to do this.  Anything, you can think of to suggest getting me to train my body to use the rest of my HR would be much appreciated.

As long as we're sharing bike pics, here are some of mine:

Trek Fuel 70:  completely rebuilt this winter.  This is my trail ride.  I'm hoping to build a dedicated race bike next winter, but in the mean time this does double duty.

Fuji Bordeux pro series

and I also have a Cervelo P4 on order.  Should be here next month!!  My wife has a Kuota Kharma and a Giant cypress that I just realized I don't have any pics of. LOL

Croix-  I agree with you... PX90 is a total lifestyle adaptation.  I only dabble with my Bros' on the side.  Our City’s Arson Investigators and Bomb Squad are totally hooked on it so I drop in on the occasional class.  Also, lots of our Technical Rescue guys do CrossFit and I drop in on classes with them as well.

My commitment is to the Triathlon and Race Season is here so that’s where my focus is.  The add-on stuff I do is more from a (healthy) social perspective since I can’t really be out at the Pub with the boys hammering Guinness and Jameson these days. Cry

these are all the parts I put on my MTB this winter except for The Mavic Crossmax wheels, the Shimano SLX crankset, Shimano XT front deraileur, and Nokom cables.  Those I did during the season last year.

The stretching question:  I stay pretty flexible doing basic stretches every day right before I workout.  Sometimes I take yoga with my wife, but not often.  Yoga is just something I hate soooooo much.  I'd rather get my teeth pulled than spend an hour stretching.  LOL

Alright guys, I'm out of here in the morning.  I won't be back until Saturday evening.  Richard (GoGoGo) should be making an appearance Saturday too.

Keep up the chatter and keep the QOTD going.  Train safe and have fun.

ok guys today's QOTD: What are you most afraid of in your next event and how do you plan to overcome it?

For me, as I believe it is for most beginners, is definitely the OW swim as I've always had a bodyboard to hang onto in the ocean and I'm not a "swimmer".  I can keep myself from drowning and move from A to B easily, but not efficiently.  I plan to overcome this by doing a couple super sprint races and aggressively attacking my swim training.

For me that would be getting a training injury that sets me back especialy in running.  Neither of the other 2 sports take as much time for the body to adapt to as running so I'm always worried about that.

What I do is I have been following Jeff Galloways training methods and schedules and now I'm adding my old habbit of 3 days a week of weight training that includes legs.

I cant swim formally either but it doesn't scare me at all I'll just be slow.

I'm mostly worried about getting sleep the night before.  This is a problem for me, and it sucks to be on 4 hours sleep the day of a big event.  Not sure what to do about it, other than be well rested so that one night of little sleep won't matter much.

^^ i actually read a few articles that said sleep the night prior won't affect your performance per se, it's more important to get a good nights sleep 2 days out.  i've slept much better the night prior to any sort of race ever since

QOTD Answer:  Biggest fear is getting out in the OWS and panicing / not being able to complete the 500 yards.  Plan is to work my way up in the pool and then go for it!
