Phat- nice bike! I just no idea what you were saying when you described it.  :D

Still trying to learn all the components about buying a bike...

The last 2 weeks have been 18+ hours each day- so little training and overall exercise. Today, finally got to go to the gym- ran 2 miles (no hills though) and did weights. Won't have a chance to do anything tomorrow. The 3 day weekend will definitely be training time for me.

Last years models,
The photos were taken when I was ready to sell the bikes on E-bay. Unfortunately for my wife, I decided to keep both bikes. The Soloist is back to being a road bike and the Duel has a permanent position on the trainer with a wired PowerTap.

I love Lightspeed and Ti in general but after years of touting the benefit of titanium they sold out and created a carbon model. Would like to hear a little more about the D2.

It takes a lot of watts to move a mountain. I'm not 100% sure my calibration is right but I can't wait to see how I do on the road.

Di2 electric shifters are pretty well reviewed. I love them but they are expensive. I hear an ultegra cheaper version is on the way. For me it's easy and the big payoff is on the hills. Given that I normally train in moderate hilly terrain, they earn their keep. Sure is nice to not have tp ever fumble around when shifting. Look out for pschriver on the tarmac!

Whats everyone doing? I want to read some check ins! Don't slack. This is an endurance sport, and you have to keep going towards the goals even when you are cold, tired, and hungry!

TOTAL bike envy
(those are all gorgeous machines!!!)
upgrades are an interesting topic....
(since i'm a road bike rookie, i just need to get comfortable with what i have!)
but i can't help but wonder what gets you the biggest bang for your buck....

anyway! that aside... i haven't taken a picture of my bike yet (it's pretty sad looking sitting in the garage right now), but this is what i'm working with:

& now i'm feeling TOTALLY guilty... but i'm bailing on my planned spin class at lunch
my legs felt like lead during last night's spin class.
a rest day might do me some good.
& i've decided to blame the snow for how tired my legs are right now!!
we're supposed to get another minor dumping this weekend, which should make Sunday's planned long run feel "interesting"
(i.e. sluggish)
but ah well. hopefully this is a sort of resistance training that will pay off this spring!

here's hoping!
(there HAS to be a point to this madness.... right??)

Yesterday was a highly productive rest day for me.  Got new running shoes, insoles, swimsuit, goggles, met up with a new masters coach...good stuff.

Today I swam 2000 yards with my new masters team.  Kicked my booty  way more than swimming on my own.  I have a lot of progress to make with my swimming before June.  Do you guys think it would help if I swam 5 days a week with the team?  I could make it happen...at least for the next 4-6 weeks until training ramps up.  Opinions, please?  I don't want any sort of overuse injury.

6ish mile run later this afternoon.  I'll check in again then.

Happy Friday everyone!

I am not an expert having completed only 1 IM but for me it was impossible to do kick drills and get my run and bike volume completed. The 2.4 mile swim went very easy for me even without a wetsuit and no kicking. If you need to work on your stroke, now would be the time to do the 5 swims per week with kicking. When you get closer to the IM you could back off on the swim a little and focus on the bike/run.

jealous!
sounds like a great & productive day!!

for my part, i picked up fins & paddles after spin class yesterday
(& then i fell asleep)

ya-- i'm taking a hiatus of the slayer attitude in favour of saving my legs for a snowy long run on Sunday

WOW.... 5 days, eh??
if that's what's in your gut-- go for it!
is that something you have to commit to right away? or can you change up your schedule as the year progresses??
HARDCORE STUFF!
impressive
& enviable!

question for you crazy IM-ers...
how long did you train & compete in the sport before completing your first IM??
(i'm hoping to make the leap within 5-10 yrs...)

Thanks!  It's a monthly fee and I can show up whenever I want.  I was thinking about swimming 4 or 5 mornings and maybe skipping the workout that focuses on kick drills...like pschriver said, I gotta keep my legs fresh for biking and running.

I started running in 2005 (I've always been active and played basketball and volleyball all through middle and high school, though I didn't do much in college), biking in 2006 and did my first tri (a HIM...I know, crazy!) in August 2006.  I've since run 5 marathons, a million half marathons, lots of 100+ mile bike rides and a few tris here and there. I just felt ready for the challenge of an IM...and I had a lifelong goal of finishing one before 30.  I'm 29 now, so it's time.  With a background in running and biking, I know I can do those legs, even if it's hard.  Swimming is a whole 'nother ballgame.  I really have to work to be able to get there. You'll totally be able to do one in 5-10 years if you want to.

I love when the slayer mentor thread gets rocking!

I'm just up from the dungeon for a breather. Strength training kicked my butt. Lots of lunges and squats. Ouch! Also finally got to break out a bit of speed in my trainer intervals. Not much but enough to get the juices flowing. Still have a 10k to run later.

Props to peter for keeping active in the frozen south. Man you gotta get a treadmill for the crib.

nicruns-smoking bike! I love the colors. don't beat yourself up if your body needs a bit of rest. Come back stronger tomorrow to kick some booty! I did an IM on my second full year in the sport but I went ape  in training. However, its totally doable depending on your base work. I had run a full mary in 08 so the run was there and really just needed to get the bike and swim in line. that came from a progression of volume that my coach laid on for me. Im's are totally manageable if you train hard and long and you learn how to control your pacing.

nerdjock-love that you are tearing up the swim! see what you can handle, listen to your body and swim on! Our masters is at 6:15am MWF and I went for a month or so and then said screw it I'd rather sleep in. More benefit in feeling rested. Like Peter said, I used to tell the coach I would pull instead of kick because of run/bike and he was cool about it.

Keep on moving and watching what you eat.

i enjoyed my break....
i actually got my grocery shopping done NOW so that i won't have to brave any weekend crowds.

(confession: i'm a triscuit junkie.)

wow..... that's intense!!
my background is swimming
i've been running for about 5 years (only gearing up for distances since 2008)
i've run several HMs, a couple of 30k events, but my 1st marathon is coming up in May
(EXCITED!!)
i'm aiming to complete my first HIM in 2012 (while continuing to gain comfort with the marathon distance)
but i wont' really know how realistic it is for me (in terms of time frame) to complete IM until after i get that 1st HIM under my belt next year.

so right now.... saying within 10 yrs seems safe (that would put me at finishing my 1st IM before i'm 40, which seems like a reasonable goal to me!)
& yet.... if it's realistic for me to complete one 3-5 years from now... that would be AMAZING!

but ah well!
no rush
the sport will always be there

a long view to the sport is wise. I think trying to do IMs every year may lead to burnout. My friend does short-medium course one year than IM the next year so he can recharge the juice and family. But hell yeah with your background, wise and solid training, and smart pacing you could easily finish an IM with a smile, nicruns.

here is an article that just came to my attention about speed first, endurance second. Check it out:

Thought I'd join in with the pick posting - this is my new-ish bike. I only got it last year so it's still fairly new to me. I love it.

Sorry I've been AWOL this week, I've been working what seems like 20 hour days Mon - Wed. I managed to get a swim and run in Tuesday and some Turbo yesterday then a swim today. I am still dealing with a cold so feeling quite sorry for myself (

Not sure about kicking back the training for a while or just pushing on through. What do you do when you have a cold?

Also I did want to ask a question about shoes. When I first got them I thought they were tight, I asked in the shop if they were supposed to be and the guy said they were. Trouble is they make my feet go numb. So ..... is it the shoes or something I'm doing. Should your bike shoes feel comfortable or am I just a wuss?

Any ideas?

Dang we have some nice bikes here! Do like the custom paint too.

Feet should not be numb; I'm not sure why that is but I would ask about it. It is an obvious signal that something about something is not right. You should not be suffering.

As to the cold, I would try to be sensible and see if you are doing more harm than good.

Ran 6 miles this afternoon.  After weeks of rain and gloom, the sun came out and it's gorgeous here.  60 degrees.  I wore super cute new running pants today and I guess the whole getting fit thing is working because a car full of young men slowed down and yelled Nice Azz when they passed.  Word.

I could tell that today's swim was a kick/pull day because my legs were a bit tired for the run.  I will definitely skip the kick days in the future.

Can't wait to hear what you all are doing this weekend!  Slay 'em!  I can say that cuz I'm part of this group, right?

Won't comment on the Azz but I like the bike. My personal belief is carbon is overrated. Some of my fastest splits were on my aluminum frame. I would be very hesitant if you feel the need to "Upgrade" to carbon.

The main overuse injury I see from swimming is shoulder problems. Inevitably it is from using paddles. I have paddles but rarely use them.

This weekend I am planning a long run and a long bike but have to work around my work schedule. I may be doing the bike inside due to weather. If that is the case I consider 2 hour to be plenty. The long run may not be too long as I don't want to be fatigued for my 5k next weekend.

Harvey,
Funny you would mention the treadmill. I hate running on a treadmill. We had one at home and when I did use it, my wife would complain that I was shaking the whole house. She traded it to the sister of her spinning instructor for an elliptical trainer. The elliptical was fine but my father was going through cardiac rehab and kept pestering my wife about what type of elliptical to buy. She simply gave him the one we had to get him off her back.

We are now in the market for a treadmill but we need a really high quality version.

There simply is nothing hotter than a Slayer babe! Y'all knew that already. The guys are all fine too haha.Get a woodway Peter. Or at least look at it before purchasing. I've tried the others and this is the best hands down. We bought ours used on eBay and had woodway completely refurbish to new specs. It's the sturdiest, most quiet, and best on your feet. Nothing compares...I do love my titanium but it's pretty expensive. Peter is right about carbon.
