I am thinking about signing up for this one.  Would be my first half, and probably my 6th tri.  I plan on doing the KC Triathlon and seeing how things are going for me.

Right now, I'd be just in it to finish.  I only recently started running, so the last leg would be my weak link, but I did knock out a (slow) 10.8 miles yesterday.  Predicted times would be :45, 4:00 and 3:00+ so it would be cutting it close.

I keep hearing how the bike course is pretty hilly, but my stomping grounds around here aren't exactly flat. Elevation profile of some of my training rides seems very similar to the one for the race.

Central Kansas lake water temps have been very slow to warm up this year.   The lake where I train was only 60 degrees on May 4! Still too cold for me even with a full suit.  Am I a wimp or what?!?  Maybe I just need to let fingers, toes and face go numb so I can't feel the icy water. I have yet to swim in brand spanking new full suit.

Ran Wichita half-marathon last Sunday, swam 3,000 yds on Monday, and rode 45 miles on Tuesday.  Rested yesterday. Ran 8 miles on Tmill today with 6x800 fartlek intervals followed by 1600 yard swim @ Y. Planning to ride 50 tomorrow followed by 6-8 mile run @ goal race pace. I have some minor left hip bursitis, but 500mg of Naproxum Sodium twice a day is allowing the training intensity to continue.  Feeling pretty good overall.  Primary goal is to finish. Secondary goal is to finish under 5.5 hours.

It's probably time to register.

Less than 5 weeks.  Over 1200 registrants.

A 40 mile bike ride yesterday, and it was really disappointing.  Nerves are starting to build already.Smile  Now I have to take the bike back to the shop, somethings wrong with the rear wheel.

This week is a recovery week.  I have a 5k scheduled for Saturday and an Oly for May 22 (a prep race for IMKs).  Swim is going well, and the run off the bike is in line with my goals as well.

Did exactly 56 miles yesterday.  I took Mission south to 199th and just headed west.  I passed I-35 and turned around.  Went South on Gardner, ended up going north of 167th street but I wanted to find 175th.  Eventually I found it.   Heading West was tough, right into a headwind coming home.  My longest ride thus far.  Yeah, I"m a little light on the saddle miles heading into this race but I'll just pace myself so I don't blow up on the run.

Hope everyone's training is going well.

Kansas is going to be a tune up race for preparing for Lake Placid so I am really looking forward to it.  I have never been to Kansas before either so the family and I are really ready to get up there and have a good time.  I had a good training block this weekend with 83 miles on the bike and a 16 mile run.

Rode the Austin-to-Shiner (yes, as in Shiner beer!) Saturday. 101 miles of continual headwinds coming out of the SSE. First long ride on the tri bike post-Galveston bike wreck. I definitely got my share of training in the winds, but did manage to finish off my Coke and LOTS of water afterward! With the rollers, this is a good training ride I think for both KS and IMFL. May have to repeat later in the year, assuming I can drag a SAG volunteer into this.

Good work everyone!  Impressive workouts, indeed.

REECEALAN: may I ask how long it took you to complete your 56 mile ride?  I'm looking for some comparison to my rides.  Wind is such a huge factor for me out here on the Central Kansas prairie.  I hit 35 MPH with a 30 mph tailwind (45 mph gusts), then turned into it and slowed to 13 mph in a baby gear. 55 miles took me 3' 2".  Thankfully, there's still 5 weeks left.  It will be a fluke not to have wind on race day. I may be coming to the realization that 20 mph average with wind and Douglas County hills may be a bit of a stretch for this flat lander with an older model aluminum Trek 1200 road bike.

TRIPLEBYPAT: Impressive ride in headwind and rollers!  What mph was headwind? Did it slow you down significantly?

I'm not sure. The "hill" I "climb" is probably 200 ft higher than the rest of the ride and it's approx 1 mile long.  I climb it 4 times on a 13 mile loop route.

MRI back today. I have a bruised bone, a tear on the outside of my foot and a weak tendon on the inside of my foot. Possibly either a cast or surgery. Not really the results I wanted to hear. It's been a rough morning. Needless to say I won't be in Kansas with you all. It was great getting to know you all and I wish I could've met you. I will be popping in from time to time to see how everyone is doing. Good luck in your training and be safe. Debbie

Argh...so sorry to hear.

Do you plan on trying any other races this year.  I'll be doing the Branson one in Sept as well

Well I go to another doctor on Monday. He will tell me more. Today I've just been crying and feeling sorry for myself but when I have moments of clarity I realize that I want to get a 70.3 in this year (depending on what happens with my foot). And my goal for 2012 is to do a full IM. I need to look and see when the rest of the 70.3's are this year. Maybe I can get to one. Thanks for all your support. I am looking forward to meeting you all one day. Especially you pitbullzz.

I don't know what the wind speed was but I slowed to 13-14 mph at times.  I have the data from my Garmin, I think I can attach the file so I'll do so when I figure it out.  I think I had a max. speed in the mid 30's definitely being aided by wind.

I've attached the Garmin file.  Not sure if the data can be exported to Excel format (I don't see it in the Garmin software).

Duh,

I didn't answer your question about how long the ride took me (it's in my logs though).  Took me just over 3 hours.  There was a few miles heading west and the wind was behind me so I was able to average in the low to mid 20's easily.

So sorry to learn of your injury, Debbie. Terribly disappointing. Nurse it to the max so it heals quickly.  I was out 6 weeks with a severed tendon in my ankle after landing wrong on a stick in my path during a run a couple years ago.  I have photos to show the extent of the damage - severe swelling and pretty colors my ankle turned, but it's otherwise a distant memory.  Be patient...there will always be a HIM or IM for you.

Thanks for sharing, REECEALAN.  Now I won't be so ashamed of my 13 mph slog in 30 mph headwind. I'm hoping it helps prep for hills.  Keep up the hard work!

remodelig47 - 2011-05-04 8:12 PM RazorTri I wish you the best of luck.  Great to have you!

Thanks for the welcome!

Starting to get excited. And tired! Definitely some serious training. I logged almost 16 hours last week. Doing my first tri ever on the 22nd in Kansas City. Should be good practice.

Debbie - so sorry to hear about your injury. I know how devastating it can be. Before my hip replacement in 2009 I was a reasonably serious runner, and when I found out I was going to have to have surgery and may never run again I was heart-broken. I was depressed for quite a while but just focused on rehabbing. Find something to occupy your time and your mind will be better for it. Good luck.

Scott

You got it Debbie.  Hopefully you will have a speedy recovery and maybe make Branson or some other 70.3 this year.

FYI...please feel free to come to Kansas and do my Swim portion for me.  I wont mind one bit
