shawn barr - 2011-01-03 3:38 PM Sugar is staying in my coffee. It's not the couple of teaspoons of sugar i use each day that's killing me - it's the bacon, second hamburger, handfuls of chips, etc. I'll give up that point and make it up in more minutes or some extra fruit and vegetables.
wplummer - 2011-01-03 12:56 PM hey a quick question-i am a coffee drinker does anyone have a good alternative to splenda or equal. i'd like to think that i can get maybe one point for being sugar free. and sorry i am not giving up my coffee. thanks.

Shawn - I LOVE your commitment to sugar and the reasons why!
I'm not a sugar adder - but I am a big fan of BEER - my personal challenge was to not drink during the week but I just got Celtics tickets so that plan has gone straight out the window.  Tonight I'll forgo the fried greasy salty goodness at the food windows and just drink my dinner Don't worry I've already flooded my system with 64oz of cool clean water so I won't be sneaking a point under that column.

I'm in the same boat RedSoxChick -- I don't drink soda and can usually stay away from sugar (until this challenge began, anyway) but like my evening cocktail/wine/beer so I think I'll add alcohol to the soda/sugar/junk food category.

but wine is a fruit!!!!

i would think wine is not a 'junk' food unless it really is adding calories that you don't want. i'd have a hard time making the same health claims for a cocktail or beer, though.

I think the wine also lowers my willpower to avoid the junk in the house left over from NYE.  I think I'll send the alcohol, cookies, etc. w/ my daughter when she goes back to school (she's 22 so I'm not contributing to the delinquency of a minor!).

Emmanem - 2011-01-05 12:24 PM This whole no junk food/sugar is harder than i thought it would be!  Haven't had any soda though

It really is! I can do no soda, I can even do no cake if required but I really can't do without a sugar in my morning coffee. Having said that I'm heading off to make a cup of tea, with another sugar in it

It is tough...I made it thru almost all day yesterday till there were homemade chocolate chip cookies sitting on my counter last night. Can not say no.

We had tollhouse cookies w/ whipped cream on top last night -- so bad but sooooo good!

This challenge is EXACTLY what I needed to get my butt in gear!  It's quite an eye-opener with regard to the sugar, junk food, water consumption, etc.  Can we just run this challenge for the next 20-30 years?  I had 45 minutes of "other" (racquetball) at lunch time.  I've been slugging down water all day and have avoided my afternoon diet coke for 2 straight days now (ZZZZZZZZZZ!).

Good morning all,

The next few days could make or break me on this challenge, the wife and kids headed off this morning down to a friends beach house so I'm a batchelor again for a few days.

billsorg - 2011-01-05 11:13 PM My training log finally has a blue marble with a little running man on it!!!  My first run since mid September.  Hit the treadmill for 40 minutes this morning.  It t'warnt pretty, but it's in the books.  No looking back now... the training season has begun!  Now I just need to get a few races on my calendar.  I avoided the temptation of sugar/junk food last night by watching TV up in my bedroom.  I didn't much care to join my wife and daughters watching the new Paula Abdul dance show (blech).  So I watched Biggest Loser.

Does anyone have any races coming up?

Congrats on getting back to running!
I would be with you on BL over Paula Abdul. We have a new season of BL starting here in a few weeks, I can't wait!

Oh, I replied because I have a race coming up, a sprint on Jan 16th

Woo hoo...  Updated the spreadsheet, I really need to eat more fruit and veggies...

i need to update too! it's past midnight here now, another day.

am i the only one surprised by how many fruits and veggies i do eat and how easy it is to eat more?

I'm surprised by how little I ate but it has been pretty easy to eat more.

i will admit living in tropical paradise and indonesia particularly, people here just naturally have fruits and veggies as a huge part of their diet. it's a lot easier to get fresh fruit or fresh cut fruit than something processed, every roadside corner has a fruit vendor.

I'm quite jealous and it reminds me of Nairobi. I walked to work past George the fruit guy. I would take a tupperware container everyday and pick 3/4 fruits for him to chop up amazingly fast and make me a fruit salad to take away which cost me next to nothing My favourite was mango, watermelon, pineapple and banana. He also always had the largest avocados I have ever seen to pick up for dinner on the way home.

That whole waiting for the rain to go away thing backfired on me.  Got back from grocery shopping with mom and it was barely drizzling so out I went to get my run in before it got dark.  30 seconds in it starts pouring... cut the run short due to the down pour and it was getting darker but managed to get just over a mile in.

That sucks...at least you got a mile in....?
My tolerance for running in pouring rain has pretty much disappeared. In the UK I used to go whatever the weather but I have turned into a complete sook living in the sunshine state of Queensland.

The past couple days I've been having 2 servings of veggies with my lunch.  Today I had peas and corn, Dad walks out of his office/my sister's room looks at my plate and comments on how impressed he is that I've been eating so much more fruit and vegetables.  He then went to get his food and got himself peas and corn as well and so did my mom.  So not only am I eating better because of this challenge my parents are making small changes as well

This time last year I wouldn't run in the rain let alone the cold so a mile in the rain and cold is a major step up for me so yeah at least I got a mile in and it's supposed to be (fingers crossed) sunny the rest of the week so that'll be nice for my next run.

I am assuming that it's OK to just update the spreadsheet once per week?

I'm still on board with the challenge and realized a few things this week:

1. I will never get the "no junk food" point. In fact, I really should penalize myself for the amount of sugar that I eat.

2. I actually do drink over 64oz of water per day, even though it sounds like a lot.

3. I only eat 3-4 servings of fruit/veggies which is disgraceful for a vegetarian. My hope is that if I work on getting over 6 servings, then maybe point number 1 can be resolved!

I did really well until I got home too. My wife sliced up some apples (yeah fruit!) and then made some apple dip with heath bits in it. I couldn't say no once she had gone through the effort.

Sigh...  I'm sitting here at my kids computer instead of running...  It's #2's dance class day, which means I leave work early, which means no day time run.  Hubby came home late from work but just in time to leave for hockey.  So now, I'm trying to fix their computer while I wait for #2 to fall asleep.  Otherwise, I know as soon as I get on the dreadmill, she will start screaming.  Yell

If I don't get some exercise points in soon I'm in big trouble...  And all this reading about wine is just making me thirsty!!  And not for water, since I already feel like I'm floating away...

wgraves7582 - 2011-01-05 10:43 AM Well the wife passed her lovely stomach virus onto me yesterday so I have been lazy and recovering since then.

I might try and sneak a workout in later on tonight depending on how I feel after I get some food in me.  It has been fun eating fruits and veggies for a purpose.  I know I will miss out on 31 points of the sugar aspect at the end of the month but I am good with it!  Kudos to you that win that battle!!!

Have a great day everyone!  Off for a nap!

Grab the remote, some good movies and take it easy so you can get better. You don't want all us CWWC slackers to catch up with you.
