I ran in my first 5k race in a year today. I thought I did pretty good given the fact that the course changed from last year and there were a bunch of hills that I wanted to walk but didn't.  Last year my time was 32:22 and this year 27:58. I felt a hundred times better than last year and I beat my wife Smile!!!

Woke up this morning and the wind was howling and the rain was dumping so I decided to go do a spin class this morning.  There's nothing better than sweating a gallon and sucking for air at 7 on a Saturday morning!.....well, sitting in a jacuzzi ranks right up there too!

Good job!  I have a kid headed over the pass from Fresno today...they made it to Colfax so hopefully the weather holds until she is home safe in NV! The wind was crazy yesterday morning!

Hopefully she made it home safe!  The weather held out for us today for a local race in Roseville, but it looks like we've got another big storm heading in tonight. Button down the hatches!!!

Congrats on the improved time in the 5k! 4 minutes seems like a lot to cut.

After my Ravens lost yesterday (and several beers to go with it), it was tough getting up this morning. This is my toughest day today with strength in am, swimming at lunch and running this evening. I got through the strength training and will push through the rest, but it won't be fun for me today. I hope everyone has a great week.

Sorry about the Ravens.  I really like them.  I was out riding my bike when they were playing.  I seemed to time it to even just miss the end of the game.  Looks like the better team may not have won.

Beating the wife was the most important part!  Although reading this makes it sound kind of bad.  But I know what you meant.

I have really got to get back to my strength training.  But with all the new stuff, I really have not figured out when and where to put it.  I think I will also put it in the early morning hours.

Let's not endorse wife beating or to be an equal opportunity group, we won't endorse husband beating either. Ha.  Everyone have a great Monday.

Conversation topic: When you aren't doing multiple daily workouts, do you workout in the morning, lunchtime or the evening? I know I need to work out in the morning, but I have a hard time forcing myself in bed the night before to be ready to get up the next morning.  Who isn't a morning person and still routinely works out in the morning or vice versa? How? Why?

I am a morning person and prefer to do my workouts then.  My wife is exactly the opposite of me and prefers to go to the gym in the evening. She supports me and the training path I'm on but she's not planning on racing next to me so working out isn't as important to her. When my schedule permits, I'll go to the gym with her in the evening but it's not my favorite time to go because we end up eating dinner super late.  Going to bed late isn't a big deal to me as my body has been used to little sleep for years.

The weather was bad this morning so both swim classes were cancelled.  I decided to do back to back spin classes.... LOL, everything was fine until about 20 min after the second class when my legs felt like they weighed a hundred pounds a piece! Oh well, what was I to expect?!  I walked them off for about 15min and then stretched for about 30min.

When I do one workout, I try to do it in the morning (even though I am not a morning person) because I know it is the one time of day that nothing can come up that will make me miss a workout. The other time is later in the evening but 9 PM workouts are tough to get started when that is usually the relaxation time for me. But I do it sometimes especially when I have multiple workouts that I need to space out (like tonight). The only other option is to do it before eating dinner but I am usually pretty hungry by the time I get home from work.

My swim workout was a bit frustrating...after 4 lap warm-up, I had 8 laps (100 yards total each) so I tried to go hard for 100 meters. I made it going all-out for 25 then gradually slowed from there. I shaved 10-15 seconds off my "smooth" swimming for 100 yards but it hardly seemed worth the effort and cardio expenditure. I can't help but think that I will be disappointed in the free-for-all swim during my triathlon. All this swimming, and I will probably just be splashing around trying to get to the bike. I guess it can't hurt for the cardio aspect though.

I am definitely a morning person.  On Saturday, I like to workout in the morning and be done by 7:45 a.m. so then I can start mowing the yard.  We have a huge yard that takes from then until noon to finish.

In one of my more stupid moments, I fired the yard service and bought a riding lawnmower to do it myself.  I very much regret my decision.

I have been swimming at lunch and I have very much enjoyed it so far.  I hope it lasts.

Not so much a morning person.  I leave for work at 6:15 am and get home at 6:30 pm so my workouts are all in the evening.  I could do my bikes in the morning but I am tired as it is.  Then all my swims are on the weekend and the pool I use does not even open until 10 am on Sat and 1:00pm on Sunday.  So I can do my ride early then swim but nothing has to be done at the crack of dawn!

She made it home safe and I had a lovely 2 hour drive from Fallon to Reno this morning with the nice frozen roads!  Reno isn't too bad but the section about 30 miles east of Reno was hideous!

If I'm only doing one workout, I definitely prefer morning. I wasn't always like that, but I found that there were too many other priorities if I waited until evening. Now I tend to wake up at 5:15 whether I'm planning to work out or not (and there's almost always a workout planned).

I slept in on Saturday and at 6 a.m. there was a tapping on my shoulder.  It was our 6 year old daughter.  She told me I needed to get up because we were having a meeting in her room.  I asked her what the meeting was about and she told me it was to discuss her birthday party.  I said, "Is this the same birthday that is in May and it is currently January?"  She said yes.  So at 6 am on Saturday morning I was in my 6 year old daughter's room as she told me everyone responsibilities for her birthday.  I thought it was so cute I could not even go back to bed when the "meeting" was over.

I would appreciate it if anyone can let me know what you think of my weekly workouts and whether I am "about right" or "doing too much" or should adjust anything. I feel like I am on the right path but not having done this before, I want to make sure there isn't a glaring issue with my training.

I am able to see your training log and it looks great.  It makes me think I am not doing enough.  Great job!
