Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Snow in April...that sounds nice! The best thing about spring snow is that it melts quickly...hopefully that'll be your last snow storm until next winter. And just to follow-up on my a-ha moment in the pool yesterday, I went out for a run today and set a pr on the 6.3 mile course around my town. I guess I was inspired from yesterday's success. Ok, I'm sure a good night's sleep, cool 50s temps, and a good breakfast helped too, but in any case, it's been two great days of training! Hope everyone has a great weekend! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, I've made a valiant effort to get my MLR in this morning. But the rain hasn't helped. I started out running with the local running club, with plans for 10 miles or so. But about 4 miles in the skies opened up with lightning. I don't mind running in rain but lightning is another matter. We got an unplanned tempo mile in as we headed back to the parking lot. 5 miles total there. Drove home and it had stopped. So I headed out shooting for the other 5 miles. Got about 1.25 miles in and the skies opened up again. Scampered back home. 2.5 miles there. Got drenched twice. Wrung out my stuff and headed to the shower. I'm hoping to be able to get 3 or 4 miles in later today to make the planned mileage. I have an HM in a month and I'm woefully not ready for it. What a difference a few months makes. In January I ran a PR HM. Now I'll be doing well to be within 5 or 10 minutes of that time. Bill Edited by breger1 2012-04-28 7:08 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got up at 5:00 this morning and dragged my butt to the gym to swim laps (1000M). Then came home and did 1hr on the bike trainer (3x15' intervals at 80-85% FTP). Legs felt heavy from yesterday's running intervals. It will be interesting to see how they feel tomorrow during my long run. Also mowed the lawn, fertilized the lawn, and got a haircut. Still have to coach a soccer game and then collectively figure out what the family will eat for dinner. I thought weekends were for relaxing? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rainy weekend here. Lots of wind and alternating downpour with drizzle. Cancelled my race so I spent 45 minutes on the treadmill alternating 8:30 pace with 9 min pace. Finished up with another half hour of strength training. Also planned to clean and muck out the garage, but that too was cancelled by the weather. Executive decision!Mitch - great dedication to serious workouts even in the face of lots of commitments, but you probably already know that a busy life is a blessed life!Bill - ditto on the lightning. Triathletes may be nuts but we aren't stupid, right.Heather - you must be a stud soccer player. Great cross training opportunity for you and good to keep your competitive spirit fed.TTFN. Janette |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice day here with my family. Great weather, so no complaints. Did a 40 minute interval session on my treadmill after my daughter went to bed. I would've rather run outside, but no biggie...I did something and that's the important part. Tonight's film while on my treadmill was Rocky IV...note to self, either get to the public library earlier for a better selection of films, or get my Netflix list better sorted. Oh well. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jenny, I like the top left one with or without the TRI portion. The one suggestion I would give for any of them would be to put a red heart on the inside of the person. I think this would help in two ways, 1. the red would really pop in the logo, 2. it hits at the whole inner drive concept (you gotta have heart) Just my .02. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Stayed up way too late last night but managed to get up to do my long run. 11.25 miles in beautiful 32 degree weather. Saw a redfox cross my path early in my run. Ran too fast but just couldn't "settle" into a slower pace. That being said, HR was top of zone 2, bottom of 3 most of the run. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Lazy Sunday morning for me. I finally pulled on some running clothes and went for a 45 minute run around town with my scooter buddy son. It was varying pace out of necessity. Then I drove over to the lap pool and spent 45 minutes swimming. Each swimming session gets a little better. Still no fish, but I am feeling more comfortable. Now back home and looking at the bike and trainer for the last 45 minute session. I am thinking it will have to be after supper as there is a crew of hungry faces lurking around the kitchen!Janette |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi guys! Busy week & weekend for me last week! Just a lot going on with kids, etc.... Ran a small 5K race yesterday - felt sluggish and couldn't quite push the pace like I wanted to, but I actually wound up winning my age group with an un-remarkable time of 25:xx -- like I said - small race!! Woke up this morning feeling kinda crappy - stuffy nose, sore throat - not sure if it's a spring cold or spring allergies, but either way it's kinda a bummer. Hope you all had a great weekend! |

Woke up this morning feeling kinda crappy - stuffy nose, sore throat - not sure if it's a spring cold or spring allergies, but either way it's kinda a bummer. Hope you all had a great weekend! My wife and I are both dealing with what we think are allergies. The weather here in Michigan has been crazy...high in the 40's on Saturday and expected high in the 80's on Thursday. Don't know if its molds or pollens but I'm all congested this morning after spending a lot of the weekend outside. On other matters - I was too sore and tired this morning to get out of bed. Hopefully will have time to get my trainer ride in this evening otherwise will move it to the morning. I think my soccer team has a clinic tomorrow evening affording me the opportunity to run on a track while they get put through the paces. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning everyone! Hope y'all having a good start to the week. Didn't get any training done yesterday...decided to take the day off for a number of reasons, but mostly because my wife was participating in her first ever 5k race. It was sponsored by the local YMCA, and she had been talking about doing a 5k for a while now. So, she signed-up on Saturday for the Sunday morning race. My wife is mostly an indoor treadmill runner, so her biggest concern was the hardness of the pavement vs. the treadmill deck. Long story short, she finished inside her goal time and is already talking about her next one! We took our 5yo daughter to the race to see Mommy run and now she is talking about running a race too. BTW, as my wife was coming down the final 20ish yards towards the finishing chute, my daughter didn't cheer per se, she was 'throwing kisses' to Mommy as she passed. It was so cute! In any case, that was my Sunday. Today, my plan is to buy new running shoes and also to get on my indoor bike for 2:30-3:00 later tonight. Last of the Mohicans is slated to be tonight's feature film, and then for the final 30-60 mins...not sure yet.

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi GPs,Hope everyone had a great weekend! I did my first swim yesterday and it was great! I found a pool in my new neighbourhood that's about a 15 min walk from my home and.... When we got there, we realized it was free!! Typically our city pools are about 3.50/swim or you can buy monthly passes so it was a pleasant surprise! Met some other triathletes at the pool too. I wanted to try out water jogging but looks like I need to find some sort of flotation device first. Jenny, can I use a noodle as flotation or should I try to find some sort of belt? Also, I think I need to get my bike refitted since the pain in my knee hasnt really subsided |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() New week, new adventures! Larchmont - what a precious picture of the 5 yo cheering Mommy on! Your wife can be doubly proud that she finished and set a good example for your daughter. Also, I am major impressed that you can do 3 hours on a trainer. Daniel Dey Lewis or not - that gets dull. Good for you. JayCee - I envy you having a pool close by. I travel a distance to mine, but I am spoiled that I don't have to fight any crowds and always have my own lane. Although, yesterday when I swam I was late and had to finish the last of my laps during the kids open swim time. I had to duck under the cross rope and weave around jumping kids. I treated it like choppy open water swim! I looked back at my April training log. I am only averaging 8 hours per week of actual swim, bike, run. I am not keeping track of other things like yoga, stretching, or weights which I do throughout the week. I am thinking I need to amp up some more time. Finally, I want to make a book and/or magazine purchase. Are there any special favorites - books or magazines - for you guys? I see the Triathletes Bible advertised on this site and my sister is a big fan of Runner's World. I know, I still have to find time to read and apply it, but I like to have a little reading material that I carry with me to glance at when I am stuck waiting. Janette |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got up early to run but got rained out again - 2nd day in a row. Then when I was getting ready for work I somehow tweaked my back a little. It's pretty tight right now (at work) and I'm walking funny (and slowly) so I think I'll probably bag the planned swim tonight to see if it'll loosen up overnight. Hopefully this is a temporary thing. Bill |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bill - sorry to hear about the back. I have done that before - it seems like just the littlest movement in the wrong direction - twinge .... Anyway, for what its worth, I am a big fan of my hot/cold wrap - it is a cheap fabric pocket with elastic and velcro that you wrap around yourself like a cummerbund and it has a pocket to hold a large gel insert that you either freeze or heat in the microwave. I just alternate all day. I can wear it at the office or move around at home and am not tied to sitting still with a heating pad or bag of frozen peas. I think I got it at Walmart. Good luck. J. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had a good swim on Friday as I rushed to daughters soccer practice. Sat.-between soccer, lacrosse andf dad duties; I didn't do anything. But I had a great day with the kiddos. Sun.-ran for 20 before my first Pilates Mat class. OMG-I think I broke my pelvis bone. Monday-weather permitting, long run. Weather blows?/swim. |

You can pick up a pretty inexpensive one at swimoutlet.com. |

![]() | ![]() Any chance you would consider taking one more? I would like a female mentor. I have participated in two sprint triathlons. My last one was on Sunday. I nearly drowned in the open water for fear of????? I hyperventilated and had to be rescued on 3 occasions. Otherwise, my race was excellent. I need help overcoming my fear of open water. I just signed up for another race in 3 weeks. Thanks,

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi folks, I had a GREAT run yesterday. One of those where it all feels effortless (even though I ran an out and back that was downhill on the out and uphill on the way back). Might have been the (unintentional) rest day on Saturday - the soccer practice didn't happen, but I didn't find out until AFTER I got to the field. @LarchmontTri - awesome about your daughter wanted to follow in her parents' footsteps and race! are there good kid-friendly races in your area? @ janette - re: soccer stud comment - I don't know about that, but I suppose it depends who I'm being compared to. @ Jenny - I'm going to be sending you a PM in the next few days with some replacement ideas for the May 10k; also, I may need to change my program a bit to reflect the fact that I'm not running.. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It looked like my back was going to let me run after a good night's sleep. Got all my running clothes on, put the first running shoe on, went to put the 2nd running shoe on ... Ouch *that* hurt. So, on the DL for a bit. Running and biking is out for now. Hoepfully swimming will be OK. I need to be focusing on that anyway. We'll see. Bill |

Yesterday I was convinced it was allergies, but now I'm pretty sure it's some kind of bug. But hopefully if I take it easy I can shake it off quickly and get back to work.... |

Also, I think I need to get my bike refitted since the pain in my knee hasnt really subsided Wow, those are a great deal! Do you have one in particular that you'd recommend? So I've been pretty discouraged with my knee situation given these past couple of weeks. I think I'm going to lay off the biking until I can schedule a bike refit and focus on swimming and water-jogging. I think I might need to reevaluate my goals a little bit for this season just because I don't want to put too much pressure on myself and get reinjured. I'm hoping by not putting too much (any) strain on my knee for the next week or two will help it heal. Went to the PT yesterday and it's still swollen (which I can feel myself) and it's just frustrating to hear. Also, Jenny, I never got back to you about your logo, I also liked the left-bottom one but i liked the font from the top right. Let us know which one you end up settling on! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Must be a baaaad week for backs! I went to a Pilates 'mat' class on Sunday morn, and by noon is was almost crippled in pain. However, a couple hot tub sessions and some easy pool work has it almost back to normal. Nice, brisk swim this AM and I've got a club ride scheduled for tonight. I think the pilates class woke up some core muscles that have always been a problem waiting to flair. I'm gonna keep at it for awhile and see if the back thing clears up. Hope everyone is doing well. Stay Healthy. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey GP's, Good workout for me this morning. I did a 55 minute spinning class and then as soon as class was over I hit the treadmill for 35 minutes. There was probably only 5 minutes between moving the legs on the spinning bike and running. I definitely had a different sensation in my legs, but I had good air. I did notice more peaks and valleys in my heart rate on the treadmill after the spinning class. Mitch, when you post the mile splits with HR info - do you keep track of that on a lap watch or do you use a Garmin device? I am interested in doing a little analysis of my HR zones over the course of a workout, but I use a Polar HR monitor and watch and have to figure out how to keep track of the info. I hate reading device manuals! Good luck to you guys trying to get healthy. My grandmother used to tell me "send out the white soldiers in your mind" which was her visualization of good blood cells going to the source of the illness/injury and working on a repair. She lived to be 92 and we always thought she was ahead of her time with the white soldiers. So ... march on white soldiers! Janette |

I am interested in doing a little analysis of my HR zones over the course of a workout, but I use a Polar HR monitor and watch and have to figure out how to keep track of the info. I hate reading device manuals! Janette Janette: I have my Garmin set to Autolap most of the time at 1 mile. Otherwise I use the lap button to mark intervals. I used a Polar until recently (RS400) and it had an autolap feature as well or you could also hit the lap button. So on my Polar I could go on the desktop software and I believe the new online software had the same capability and look at my splits. I do have to say that the Garmin Connect online portal for Garmin watches is very nice (you can check it out by following links to workouts on my training log). Also, as far as integration with BT.com I find the Garmin better. But, I was very happy with my Polar for many years. Really only reason I got the Garmin was for the swim features. I know...much more than you asked. |
