Here is a link to the workout on my Virtual Trainer site if you're interested:

http://www.virtualtraining.cycleops.com/en/sundevil87/workout/88411...

Chose the one from the 9th. You can compare to the ride on the 3rd.

sundevil87 - 2013-03-10 9:51 AM So, I learned a little something about myself and how I respond to certain training events. It seems intuitive, and it probably is, but there is an interesting observation. I've posted my Napa hits cycle trainer workouts. The first time I did the course it took me a little over 2:30 hours. I did that workout on essentially fresh legs. The next time I did it (last week) it was the day after I did a hard 2 hour run. It took me just over 3 hours to do the same ride. Yesterday I did the ride again. Only this time it took me 3:30 hours. That is ok, because I wanted to spend 3 1/2 hours riding. I had thought, based on my other two rides that I would be into my second lap by 3:00. Only it didn't work out that way. On Friday, I did a good 1 hour bike workout at just under threshold power. I can only surmise that the bike workout on Friday sapped energy from me and affecting my ride yesterday. That is my story - and I'm sticking to it. I'll tell you - I was whooped. My quads were smoked. I could not have run if I had to. I pray that the trainer workout is much more challenging than the actual ride otherwise it could be a very long day in Napa indeed.

Man good ride but yeah I gotta think you are probably right. Are you going to try a few more like that before Napa to help evaluate what your goal pace is on the bike?

It was a decent week for me. Although my run mileage was slightly down, I think I made up for that with some speed quality stuff which went quite well. I am beginning to plan on what type of pace simulation workouts I want to do in the next 6-8 weeks, what type of taper I want to do and the most important part, transition training. I have watched a few youtube videos and even tried a mini transition simulation off the bike to the run today on my brick workout. I need to gather a few more necessities for the bike and misc. stuff before race day.

I realized the other day that I have about 10 weeks before Longmont. This will be my first ever triathlon ever and I am excited but yet sometimes nervous when I think deeply about what it will be like. I believe my training is going well but I still have work to do. I made the wetsuit purchase and also joined the Rocky Mtn Triathlon Club. My hope is that I might get a chance to do an open water swim with the team before then. If I dont that will be my biggest worry. Also ordered my club tri kit!

Other things I need to do are to decide what sort of pace I want to set on the bike and swim. The run I will just go off of feel since that is the discipline I have the most experience in. I need to get outside on the bike some more to decide effort vs. pace but I think the time will come soon enough.

I found this helpful and thought I would share. A good video of how to set up transition.

Today I celebrated the start of daylight saving time by taking my bike out of the shed where it was locked for the winter and doing my first bike workout.  25 miles mostly on trail, first half downhill, but going back was uphill plus decent headwind. Took me 2h and left me completely exhausted. Oh well, at least I know where I stand, but I'm aiming for 1:30 in Oly, still lots of work to do.

Does any of you know where I could get good prescription sunglasses for biking and running?

Have a good week!

Decent week for me as well, focusing on the bike and some running.   I have not been to the pool in 2 weeks but that will change this week.  Yesterday I got in 4hrs on the bike, somewhat hilly terrain and did not push as I am still working on building time in the saddle.  Neck felt a little better.  I also made some minor adjustments to the seat position which seemed to help.  Had the opportunity to test the cages I mounted on the rear of my seat and found that I am much better at pulling the bottles with my right hand vs left.   Anyway, need to continue practicing nutrition while on the bike.

Run-wise, I got in 7 miles today, 45 minutes of speed work - 1/4 mile uphill with 1 min rest in between.  Given yesterday's ride, I am happy with how I felt running today.  Time is closing in and luckily, the weather seems to making a turn.  Which is good because I have 10 weeks left to IM Texas.  Take 2 weeks off for taper and that leaves me with 8 weeks to step it up.   At this point, I am just focusing on being able to finish under my own power.

Have a great week everyone.

Yes it has been quiet in here! I'm still trying to get on a regular schedule of training, I start my HIM training next month! I am really hoping my work schedule stays the way it looks going forward, maybe I'll have some to actually train the way I need?

Must be nice to have weather nice enough to ride outside? 32 and breezy in Maine today.

Hi Dan! That sounds exciting. Yeah work is always sort of an unknown it seems like. I did the ride on the trainer but the run was outside. It was sort of breezy yesterday and I got caught in a little bit of rain but I am used to running in the rain from living in Seattle for so many years.

Off to the pool at 10 and then a short bike and run today but very easy as I can feel some fatigue today in my legs. I have been taking advantage of a totally quiet and empty house the past two weekends as the wife is attending workshops on both Saturday and Sundays over in Boulder. I have been a training monger!

Hey guys,

It's been a crazy week - I was swamped.

I trust all are getting in the work they need/can. As for me, I had a good Monday - I was able to do a 4000 meter swim which is what I need to do for Napa. It was without wetsuit so I am comfortable that I'll be able to manage the swim - assuming that water conditions are good. I am hoping for nice, calm waters.

Yesterday I knocked out a 19.25 mile run in just over 3 hours. I'm feeling the tightness today. I took it easy on the run since my objective was to have more time on the legs vice running hard and fast. I feel good about where I am for the run as well.

Now, I need to put it all together. My volume is way down, so this race will be about getting to the finish and improving over AZ because I am more experienced athlete and have better base and fundamentals rather than because of quality training.

Such is the life of a busy age group athlete.

Hopefully, today I can get several hours on the trainer.

Next week is going to suck training wise as I'll be traveling to New Jersey. I hope to get some workouts in during the week. I'll be in Atlantic City. I hope that I'll have a good fitness center or decent weather to get some runs in.

Also - just for the fun of it - me a couple of guys from the Ragnar Del Sol team signed on with a group of guys that needed runners to fill out their Ragnar Wasatch Back team in June. Fun stuff.

Here in Colorado we're in the midst of our "great weather bookended by blizzards" season. No telling what is going to happen. Need the weather to be nice on the weekends so we can get out on the road vice on the trainer. My run yesterday was all into the wind. I did a straight run from point A to point B - had my wife pick me up at the end. I tend to prefer those kinds of long runs vice out and backs. It is a mental thing I know. But I like to strap on the shoes and just start running and end where ever I end. Maybe one of these runs will be like Forrest Gump and I'll just keep going, and going and then a few years later, stop!

Good thing though was that it was basically down hill. That equals out the into the wind part.

I hear ya. I'm in Atlantic City at the Taj and in a quandary. I dont want to pay the 20 bucks a day to use the gym and feom what my NJ NG guys tell me it is best to not wander / run outdoors not in a group. I'm hoping I will finish early and get to head back a day sooner than planned. thismtime of year is not the best.

I guess you will have to just run the stairs? that should give you a good work out.  I can't believe they charge $20 a day for the gym?

It has to be really tough to train for an IM when your traveling!

Good luck!

Been busy with work and taking care of an elderly dad while trying to work in a little training haven't had much time to post.  The weather here hasn't been cooperating much lately either.  Usually Eastern NC this time of the year the weather improves almost daily, but this year we're stuck in a pattern of abnormally cold temps (20 below normal) and cold rainy days. Hope it ends soon.  Finally got the bronchitis behind me and been hitting the pool. Yesterday was nice and I got home early from work decided to take the bike out for a ride, haven't been able to ride much lately.   I managed to get in 36 miles. I've been hitting the pool every other day on my way to work in the mornings and try to get anywhere between 30 minutes and  1 hour in.   Looking forward to my first Tri this Saturday and of course, the forecast for Saturday morning is temps in the 30's with a chance of drizzle. Oh joy!

Good luck Bull! Sounds like you have a good base in and will do just fine! Hopefully the weathermen are wrong and the temps will be a little higher? Is the swim outside?

Hello,

glad to know that all you are keeping on track with your training.  Weather here in Ohio is nasty too, most of my training is still inside,  last week only one evening had courage to do hill repeats outside. On my way home heard barking and saw big bulldog charging at me. Started shouting and miraculously it worked - dog stopped, turned around and walked away.  On weekend had a muddy bike ride 20mi on trail. Saw a red tail hawk so close, I could have touched it. Oh, and my birthday present stationary bike is here, now it is being unpacked and assembled, so if no parts are missing I'm going to watch movie and pedal tonight. Sweet

Nice...Having a bike inside to ride is so much easier. I find myself riding indoors the majority of the time so it should be a great investment for you.

Sort of funny you had a dog chase you and makes me remember when that happend to me. I am glad he stopped. Last month i took a run outside along a dirt road that only had a couple houses on it. Well both homes had unleashed dogs which proceeded to chase me down the road in about 1/4 mile in both directions. I guess I turned it into a couple of 1/4 mile repeats if anything! I have a can of spray to take with me next time I head that way as the dogs didnt seem very friendly.

My first Tri is tomorrow morning at nine. The weather forecast at start time is temps in the mid 30's and a chance of rain. I was hoping for better but you have to take what you get. I'm ready to do this. I wish i could have trained a little more but life gets in the way and ther's only so much time. I was looking at the results from the last three years and based upon my training times, i'll be able to hold my own and finish about middle of the pack (hopefully) in my age group. Was going over my bike yesterday making sure the chain was cleaned and lubed, etc. When wouldn't you know it, somehow I managed to break the kickstand. I figured this might be a problem. I couldn't get a kickstand in time for tomorrows race so being a sailor i improvised. I took the kickstand off my wife' mountain bike and luckily it boled on my bike. Looks a little funny but it works and keeps the bike upright. I went for a swim yesterday and i realized that I am swimming now at even a leisureky pace much faster than the swim time i submitted for the race which has me starting near the back. Anyway, tomorrow's the day! Thanks to ecerybody for the kind words, advice and encouragement.
