So I have a question on strength training (Scott, Kelly, anyone)

I'm thinking about ordering "The New Rules of Lifting for Women" but wanted opinions. From the reviews, and a blogger I follow that uses the book, it sounds like a good plan. Basically it says a woman shouldn't strength train any different than a man. No light weights, heavy weights, progressively getting heavier as the plan progresses.

Does anyone know anything about this book? I want something I can follow and this seems like a good option. Opinions? Other books/plans I should look at?

If you are going to lift in a weight room to build strength, lift to build strength -- meaning once you've done a week or two of adaption lifting (just to get your body used to lifting so you don't hurt yourself) lift the heaviest weights you can.

Last fall I did Jamie Eason's livefit program online. It was a progressive weight training program over 3 months. No cardio for the first month. I really liked it and may do it again this fall. It has an eating guide as well. There is also a lot of online support. The other one I am thinking about is James Wilson's program but he charges and Jamie's is free. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/jamie-eason-livefit-trainer.html

The finish of the men's 10K was amazing (seriously these guys got 27 and change for a 10K, I know lots of people who would be happy with that time for a 5K).  Here's the last 100 meters:

http://www.flotrack.org/coverage/248216-2012-London-Olympics-Games/article/13915-Mo-and-Rupp-Olympic-Moment-Mens-10k-Final-100-Meters

Pretty amazing to watch Galen and Mo finish 1 - 2.

If you can get the BBC coverage, its worth watching on the BBC (if you can change your computer's VPN you can stream all of the BBC's coverage).

Ok quick run down on my race yesterday...3:32:25 was my time...It was Awesome! Haha it kicked my butt though. The swim was hard the first 500 and I used free, side, and back strokes to get through. Then I settled in and stayed free the whole rest of the way and actually caught some folks from prior waves. The bike was good except I lost momentum twice when my chain jumped off. The run was hilly, hot, and I walked for the first time in a race :/ The volunteers were awesome though and have me energy to finish strong. I will definitely be back. Thanks for all of y'alls help and advice along the way and your encouragement a well! God Bless y'all!

Eh.  I felt good on the swim and the bike.  The run was just wretchedly hot and humid and at mile 1 I noticed I was running 8:15-8:30 so I pushed harder.  My legs are shot.  Ice baths are my friend.  I caught a peek at the official board and it looked like I was 110 overall out of more than 1300.  So a good result overall.  I haven't downloaded any stats yet from the garmin.

Interesting pictures -- the TT positions of Kristen Armstrong and Bradley Wiggans:

Kristin Armstrong of USA uses a linked hand position, much like Wiggins. Both riders would have tested this in the tunnel

Wiggins was simply the best on the day

Congrats Larkin and Scott!!Check in Jen!!Interesting article by Wellington on rest and recovery. I was feeling guilty about taking some extra rest days and feel a little better after this article. My age is catching up with me. http://edition.cnn.com/2012/08/03/health/wellington-rest-recovery/?...

I give up Kelly, what are we supposed to notice with the pictures? Kristen is very low & aggressive? Wiggins?

I actually think they're both very similar.  Bars are really narrow which leads to a more pronounced hunch in the back instead of a flat back.  I don't think that position is sustainable over 112, but it works for 26 or maybe 56.

The narrow elbows works for some body types, but not all. My shoulders would explode if I were to ride like that for more than 1 mile.

I had quite the experience yesterday.  LOL  Finish time was 2:52.  Not so great.

It had stormed Saturday night, so the water had some chop to it.  Nothing too crazy for Lake Erie.  I was being pulled to the left, so I had to sight often (more than usual).  There weren't many women around me, as everyone spread out quickly, so I really had to focus on maintaining a straight line.  Ended up pulling off a 26:36, which is my best olympic swim time yet.  I was pumped when I got out of the water and looked at my watch.

My timing chip flew off my ankle when I removed my wetsuit.  Had to deal with that for a while.  By this time the sky had turned dark and the wind was blowing hard.  The bike course is extremely hilly....difficult without the wind.  I have NEVER had to deal with so much wind in my life.  I could barely keep my bike upright.  I usually stay in big chainring for the entire race, but I was in small more often than not for this race.  I went to take a sip of my Gatorade (decided to use the bottle they gave us at the expo) and realized I hadn't removed the seal under the cap (DUH).  No fluids for the entire ride.  Then a gust of wind blew some debris all over the roads and some of it got in my right eye.  I could feel some grit on my contact.  I kept trying to perforate my Gatorade seal but couldn't with the wind, so my lips were stuck together from dehydration.  Nice.  Honestly, I thought about walking off the course after the second loop.  Anyway, ended up with a craptastic 17.4 average.  Average HR was in the 150s and if it were any higher, I wouldn't have been able to run a very hilly run course.

Storms hit during the run.  All the crowd support left.  I want to hug the volunteers for staying!!!  Anyway, run was ok for me.  The wind was blowing so hard during miles 3-5...again, it was hard to keep running.  I think I have some mental hangups with running, which hold me back from going faster.  I can fade in the middle miles, and then the last 2 miles are my fastest....don't know what that is.

Glad to be done with the race.  It was a mental toughness day, that's for sure.

Thanks, Michele.  Yes, it wasn't the best day to race, but I made the best of the circumstances.  It made me tougher, that's for sure.

Funny thing is that the swim matters the least.  I mean, doesn't matter how fast you come out of the water if everyone passes you on the run.
