CRAIG -

"Doing my hair" involves envying other people's hair!

During Yoga last week, the instructor was doing a deep forward bend from the Triangle, one of those poses that is extremely difficult for me to do (I have very poor forward bendability). She then said "And soemtimes I like pulling on my hair to increase the forward and downward bend." Afterwards I (non-accusingly) pointed out to her that she created two impossibilities for me in just one fairly simple pose. Woe is me!

CRAIG again -

First, congrats on the run week -- 14+ is not chicken-scratch for ANYbody, so you deserve to be very pleased with it!

Second, how badly do you figure you need the recovery week? It sounds like you're feeling quite good, hardly misisng a bit, and if you're not feeling drained you MIGHT want to keep the revamped schedule's swims and bikes in, and juts back off some on the run. In fact, unless your shoulders are sore, youc an probably keep ramping up the swim without any worries.

Third, don't accuse yourself of "poor planning"; all these races are there just to tempt us, and when they succeed it is more their doing than it is ours!

Fourth, as for the schedule, if you can handle the lack of variety it should be fine:
-- The runs seem smart, at three-a-week and nothing over-distance (PCT is an oly, yes?). If the 6.2 is taking about 81 minutes, then thsoe other two should be about 3.5 miles and maybe 4.5 miles?
-- Okay on the swim at a couple a week. What time and distances are you up to now?
-- Can I assume that the Saturday and Sunday bikes are outside rides? If so, that's good! The spin classes are fine, but they can't quite replicate riding outside, and they almost certainly can't replicate the position you ride on your "real" bike. So, if you can get in at least two outside rides each week, all the better.

Does that help any? If not, ask again!

Okay, now I see what Craig was responding to. Forgive me if I do not even begin to commiserate with you on your hair problem. I mean, it's not that I want you to feel miserably matted or anything, it's just that I would love enough of my own to GET matted! As it is, I have the worst of both worlds - not enough to mat, but enough in back to display the symptoms of "helmet-head". Bah!

Night riding might've been more sensible years ago, before ubiqiuitous texting-while-driving became all the rage. I think I whined about this before, but if not...

Onatrio has now passed a law prohibiting texting while driving. Sounds, smart, but it has just chased the perps "underground" -- whereas they used to text at the top of the steering wheel with at least some vision facing forward, they now do it at the bottom of the wheel where their chances of seeing a cycling is severely limited. I don't care if they do this and run up the rear end of a transport truck, but if it'd a cyclist's tokhis their riding up, then I have a bigger problem. And of course my problem becomes really big if it's MY tokhis!

I'm with you on race packets, and wonder when stimulus initiatives are going to penetrate that odd little niche.

That said, at my budget-conscious race today I didn't do too badly. Yes, there are a few single sheets of paperage that are trying to inform me of something, but also:
-- A small packet of "Udderly Smooth". I have many of these, have never used the product; chafing is not an issue for me.
-- One sample-size thingie of Curel, which I think is for mositurizing.
-- A 17g roll-on of Dove Men+Care, which I guess is a deodorant but the container doesn't use that word. Instead it uses "clean comfort" and "powerful protection" and "non-irritant". (Heck, those are terms I use to describe MYSELF!)
-- An 18g "Taste of Nature" bar, "Niagara Apple Country" flavor. I will eat this wee morsel at soem point.
-- A copy of "iRun" magazine. Might have some useful stuff in it.
-- "Get Out There" magazine, which is free but which I never see anywhere. Ditto the "useful" hope above.
-- A copy of "Ottawa Family Life" magazine. I'm less hopeful of the useful part with this one.
-- The "Women's Annual Race Calendar" from "Get Out There" magazine. Right church, wrong pew?

GEORGE -

Real quick --

Keep trying the pull buoy. Yes, it can feel wierd, but like many other things that also feel weird, you can get accustomed to the weirdness.
Try it in different locations -- up high as it will go, just above the knees, just above the ankles.
As for a strap, what works well is an old bicycle tube cut to appropriate length and partly inflated and then tied off. Alternatively, a wheelbarrow inner tube will work, but you need to work at proper inflation as that can REALLY elevate your lower half.

Finally, that's a good message that the p.b. sent you about your body's position probably being too low when swimming regular. Are you aware of "pressing the buoy" and swimming "downhill"? (The buoy-word as just use refers to your lungs, and not a pull buoy.) If you don't know what those refer to, ask and I shall tell!

Gotta go now!

Good morning everyone,

First I want to wish all the great mothers out there a Happy Mother Day, have a great day.

Steve, to be honest Im not really sure about the Dr comments, all I remember is something about a fractur or teat and that on one side it will take time to heal but I could still train as long as the pain does not get worse, and if it was on the other side it would require surgery, but he thought with the amount of running I was doing it was the side where it will take time, but we did the MRI to be safe. I have a habit when I go to the dr to blok out everything he/she is saying and just remember the part about what need to be done. I guess its all that dr talk that goes over my head and I jut want to know what needs to be done to fix it. Normally my wife goes with me on important dr visits because of me not paying attention, but she was unable to make this visit.  As for the pain, there is none when I bike or swim, just when I run.

Steve to answer the question about my plan, I do have one but for the last month it has been changed around due to the running. Im using a plan off BT.  I hope to get back to my plan next week. I have decided to use your advise and only due Sun ride and not ombine Sat and Sun.  As for the downhill swim and the pressing the bouy, I have no idea what that means so if you could please explain that for me.

Steve - Congrats on the race, WOW 20 min on your first 5K and 21 on the second one, that is awesome. I know you are not crazy about your bike time, but I would love to run 20min 5K's and also bike 19.4mph. If I did that now I would be watching yall from the great skies above.

Have a great day everyone and again Happy Mothers Day ladies and enjoy your special day, because tomorrow its back to doing everything while we men just sit around.  Have a great day.

Johanne - WOW WOW WOW, major improvement from your last year race. congrats.

Steve, even with your 'potential' injuries, you had a great race. I hope you can get some answers because even if you have had some training glitches it seems like you are in for a great season!

Happy Mother's Day to all! Ladies, enjoy Men, be good to all women, all day!

Not a bad race but not what I had hoped for, pleasant day. loved the temperature this time-water was 72*. I don't think I liked the swim course. Same lake as my last race-opposite end, a good venue other than the swim area. Scrambling up a steep narrow rocky berm while dizzy was not a great experience, I almost fell back in. There were volunteers helping you out of the water though and one of them pulled the lanyard of my wetsuit for me. I started the swim ok, stayed in the pack ok, till the turn around then it began to fall apart-I really think it is all mental but I don't know what the issue is, I mean 400 meters right? How big of a deal can that be in a calm little lake? A long run to the TA and on the road-this is a grassy field then concrete to the mount line. I have gotten away with road shoes mounted to my pedals and gotten my feet in without difficulty till today. My left foot/shoe was being stubborn, the tongue rolled back into it and fussing with the straps kept me from getting on top of my gear sooner. I turned in an ok bike leg anyway with a 19.0 avg, was hoping for 20. It seems to take me one lap to get warmed up, my first lap was slow the second rocked including a down wind stretch over 25mph up to 30. It was a bit windy.

I didn't wear a watch and my run felt slow, I passed a few got passed, the usual-my time was 27:59.6 so I have to be happy with that. I know it was just a few weeks ago I started hitting under 30m for a 5k but now I want mile splits in the high 8's-never satisfied!

T-1 1:13 T-2 :48-no complaints with that, even after fumbling with my wedding ring..I forgot to remove it before getting in the water, I felt it getting slick so I took it off and shoved inside my jersey under my wetsuit Wouldn't want to explain losing it a few days after I explained "pace booty" to my wife

1:23:56, 14:48 Swim (long run to TA and timing mat out of water) 39:06 bike (19mph avg) 27:59 run. My big limiter is the swim. Happy to be under 1:30, disappointing to not get 1:15

So KC and an Oly is next and I remain slightly freaked out about the swim

Ok, next year I will buy take out for mothers day lunch.  I feel that Im a good cook and so does everyone else, but today everything fell apart.  Lunch was supposed to be greek slaw with grilled greek chicken breast and homemade baked beans.  I also purhased some gator and pork sausage to nibble on while the chicken cooks.  Had total of 10 adults and 7 kids to ook for. I borrowed my brothers gas grill which was a bad idea, I put my sausage on the grill and went inside for about 2 min and when I came back the grill was flaming and the sausage was crisp black (tossed in the garbage). This morning I made greek slaw and eneded up putting to much salt (tossed in garbage) we had to go out and buy already made potato salad. Well the grill broke before I could cook the chicken so I had to bake it.  Well everyone was hungry and the chicken was taken forever in the oven so we called sonny bbq and purchased 4 chickens from them.  So all the cooking I did for lunch no one was able to eat.  After everyone left my son had spome baked chicken and his commit was its bland, no flavor. Ha.. All that money and time and we had to order lunch.. I hope all you ladies had a great day today.

George...I think the mantra "NO cooking on Mother's Day" should include men too

It happens to the best of us...that meal that was supposed to be awesome slides a bit south of our expectations.

HELP!

I finally at least got on my tri bike today. What a weird set up those critters are! Felt so weird with the handle bars and breaks and gears in different places. I had to tweak the seat height and tension on peddles before I could even ride it at all.

BUT ...here's my question --- Is it normal that my feet can touch the front tire when I take a really sharp corner?? I nearly crashed and thought, "no wonder roadies don't like tri bikes riding too close'. YIKES!!!

Yes it is called overlap and is common depending on frame geometry and foot size. Try having the inside foot up at the tightest point in the turn

LycraCladChamp - 2011-05-05 10:29 PM The Paleo Diet in a nutshell: The only food you can eat is it must have been around in the Paleolithic (Caveman) era.  There are obvious exceptions to this rule such as pre and post workout meals.

What kind of food does that include? I assume mostly vegetarian?

Kasia

It includes a lot of fruit, veggies, nuts, lean red meat, poultry, fish.

Thanks Jeff. well dang... seems like a freakin' design flaw to me! Wow...freaked me out a bit. Yeah, guess I can't see riding around too much in town with lots of quick stops, on and off, and quick turns to dart across busy streets. May have to load it onto the car and take it out a bit for my first maiden voyage of any distance.

The other thing was that I felt 'wobbly' as I went into aero like my sense of balance was off. I have profile design aeros (clip ons) on my road bike now so aero is something I'm a bit comfortable with but on the tri bike it was all different. Maybe I need a professional fitting but I was trying to save the dough on that and do it myself.

You can eliminate this issue my placing most of your weight on your outside foot.  This will force the outside leg's pedal to the low point of the pedal stroke and bring your inside foot to the top.

ie: in a right hand turn place most of your body weight on your left foot.

this does two things for you.

1) removes the chance of clipping your toes on your front wheel on a tight turn, which you have experienced

2) removes the chance of hitting your pedal on the ground in a tight turn, this can result in a crash for most people.

Good morning everyone,

Question on gears, this morning and yesterday I worked on strength on the bike.  When putting in my log Im not sure if I rode 2 gears higher or lower than normal.  When riding and you shift into a harder gear, are you shifting higher or lower.  I put in my log that I rode in 2 gears lower and wanted to know if I put that in correct.  Well off to the gym for a swim.  Have a great morning.

Sounds like everyone who raced this weekend had good races... though Steve seems to be a little disappointed... I am jealous of your times!  I just want to be able to run a 5k in under 30 minutes some day... But at this point, I believe I have injured my left knee.  Am seeing my orthopedist tomorrow at 1:30... Hopefully nothing to serious but when it hurts just to walk I know something is not right.  I rode 18 miles yesterday morning and then tried to do a short 5min jog afterwards and something just didn't feel right.  limped back to my car, iced and rested the day but still this morning every step is painful.  I just hope what ever is going on isn't something that is going to kill this whole season... Hopefully some PT and rest (ie no running just swimming and light biking) will help.  I am pretty sure that my muscle imbalance is a big part of the problem along with IT band issues.  The pain is on the outside and under my kneecap which leads me to believe that it is related to the IT band but I just don't know since this is new place for pain in this knee.

Hope everyone is having a great day!!!

Alex
