DirkP - 2012-08-29 7:11 PM At the ER with Laiken. It appears that her current illness may be, by early unsubstantiated prognosis, either gall bladder or ulcer. Obviously I would appreciate prayers for her. Oh yeah. Her 19 th birthday is tomorrow and there's a possibility that she'll be admitted. Happy birthday to her!

Oh no!  Blessings and well wishes to Laiken and mommy an daddy.

Thanks Tracy.  We got a better diagnosis at the ER after some blood work, ultrasound and urinalysis.  She has a rather bad kidney infection.  She was given IV antibiotics and will also get some oral antibiotics this morning.  She had been dealing with this since Sunday but we all thought it was some kind of bug but last night Lis decided enough was enough and tool her to an "urgent care" center.  The doc there told her to go to the ER and his thoughts were what I mentioned first.  Apparently that first doc thought it was extremely likely that it was the gall bladder.

Anyway, she's being treated properly and now and she is looking forward to getting better now that she/we know whats going on.

For me, today should be a lovely day.  Home from the ER at 1:30 AM, to bed at 1:45 Am and now up for work at 5:00 AM.  It's going to be an awesome day!  I can't wait for it to be over!

Well good news that you know what is wrong and she can get treated and move on. Hope she feels better quickly.

And I hope you don't sleep walk through your day. Yesterday I woke up at 2:00 a.m. and couldn't get back to sleep. I spent all day feeling like a zombie but all I had to do was try to keep up with Gracie . I went to bed at 8:30 last night!

Dirk I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's illness but glad to know at least they figured out what it is and she is being treated properly for it. What a way to celebrate your 19th Birthday. I hope she is feeling better, gets well soon and has as happy a birthday she can under the circumstances. As for you I hope your day goes by quickly as it sounds like you will be drinking ALOT of coffee or at least I would be to get through the day.

I threw a race report together for this passed weekend's race.  It's no surprise, I fell apart on the run.

I really need to learn to suffer through the run.  I feel like I basically quit.  Sucky ending to the tri season.

I promise I will catch up with everyone this weekend.  I have 3 days off in a row and only one of those days is dedicated to wedding stuff!

Welcome back.  Given everything that's going on I think the run you had wasn't as bad you are perceiving it. Keep running and we'll have to hook up for another ride at some point.  Hope the wedding prep is going well.

yow, scary moment.  Glad this turned out to be something relatively easily treatable.  Get some rest and here's to a quick recovery for Laiken.

I was glad to be your facebook friend so that I saw this last night.

I think that a kidney infection is preferrable to ulcer or gall bladder right?  Just treat it with antibiotics and no ongoing concerns?

I went through a similar experience with my young son.  When Evan was 9 I guess, he developed some puss discharge from his little boy part and would urinate blood.  I don't know how long this was going on until his Mother and I knew.  He was bashful about it and hid it.  It was only when looking at the laundry that his Mother noticed.  Turned out to be a bladder infection which is rare in boys so they ran a battery of tests to look for problems that may have lead to the infection.  One of which required that he be catheterized.     My poor little guy.  He took it like a champ though.

I sure hope that Laiken is comfortable and will improve quickly now with treatment.

As for you, Dirk...what a work ethic!  If I'm up all night, I call in to work and catch up on my sleep.  I'm a wuss compared to you.  But who isn't?

Thanks all for your comments about Laiken.  Last I spoke with Lis; they both were struggling to sleep quite a bit.  It seems the pain is keeping Laiken awake and Lis, being a nurse and a caring mother, won't try to sleep much until she feels everything is on the right track with her.

Jeff, definitely the kidney infection is better than the other 2 early prognoses we received.  Obviously we hope there are no lasting issues with the infection but Lis stated that the particular type of infection can be very serious and if not treated properly.  I feel it was caught soon enough that further concerns won't be part of the equation.

I would like to think my work ethic is good but I am not so convinced my manager shares the same opinion.  And it was extremely tough to get out of bed this morning after 3 hours of sleep.  After years of pulling this kind of stuff I have learned the key is to not stop moving.  Once stopped for a while......it's OVER!!!  I am also still planning on riding tonight.  25-30 miles at a low intensity but that will be determined later.

Again, thanks to all of you, from our entire family, for your thought and prayers.

I'm STILL coughing and it's making me really grumpy because I can't go run or bike and I don't have the energy to pack up all of my stuff and schlep my butt to the pool!

There is a bright side.  I like to crochet.  I'm well on my way toward completing this years Christmas gifts!

MATT - I can't say it any better or agree more than what all the others have said. You made the right choice, both to call it a day and then to stick with your original goal in looking at your remaining races. I love your new signature quote - "Success is not final, Failure is not Fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." That's good stuff and what your kids will remember about you. At my daughter's cross country meet on Tuesday she brought her friends over to show them my road rash. It was in my "scars" that she was most proud. Don't for one second think your kids view you as anything less than a great dad because you didn't cross the finish line. You stood up and are continuing your fitness journey and that's what they'll take away from watching you.

WARREN - Your description of your dad was really touching.

JONATHAN and ALLISON - So good to see your name pop up here, even for a brief time. I've missed you both.

DIRK - You were a beast in your race and I'm sorry you had to come home to Laiken being sick. I know it was a rough day for her and Lisa yesterday. How about you? Did you make it through work all right? I can't imagine having the energy to get the longer training in that you wanted after lacking so much sleep. Hope everyone in your household was able to rest well last night.

TRACY - Sorry you're still not well. I tell you, drinking tons of water is the key.

JOANNE - Only NINE days to go!!! I can feel the excitement from here. Hope you're starting to feel confident.

I'm looking forward to some good family time and good rest time this weekend - a couple football games, family movie night and a dinner date with my hubby. May everyone have a blessed Labor Day!

Well the RD pulled the plug on the race this weekend due to the threat of inclement weather. They are predicting 3-4 inches of rain starting 2night and most of the day tomorrow. I know the RD and this was a tough decision for him.

So now I will stay home and enjoy an extra glass of wine this evening .

Tracy sorry to hear that are still not feeling well I hope you are feeling better soon and hope your son is feeling better as well.

Brenda enjoy your holiday weekend and your date night with your husband.

Dirk I hope your daugther is feeling a little better today and hope you and your wife were able to get some rest.

Not sure if anybody is racing this weekend, I thought Dina might be but if anybody is good luck, race hard and be safe.

I hope everyone else has a great holiday weekend and enjoys spending time with family and friends. For me not much planned other than getting as much time in swimming, running and biking as my body will allow over the next 4 days. To be honest with my HIM coming up at the end of the month I've been giving it so much thought as what I need to do to be prepared to be able to finish that race. I realize with the HIM and IM distances more things can go wrong then can go right. I am just trying to put myself in the best position I can to be successful but I'd be lying if I didn't say I am a little worried about it.

Ok,  I just read Brenda's race report and I feel compelled to say a few things about racing, some of which may or may have not been discussed by this group already.

  • Some in this group have called me tough and that I have the mental part of racing down.  I'll allow others to form their own opinions but I would challenge those perceptions after seeing first hand what Matt and Brenda dealt with last weekend.  Admittedly, I have been reasonably successful in my triathlon racing "career."  However, I don't feel I have really had to tough through any of these races to the point that Matt and Brenda have.  I believe that Brenda, Matt and Tony are the warriors that have had to really struggle through races and either pull the plug or somehow find a way to get through it all.
  • Toughness is something we CAN train for but for many, I believe, it comes naturally.  (I haven't been allowed the time to get to know Tony so my example is with those I know).  Brenda and Matt have a natural toughness that many of us may only be able to train or wish we could ever posses.  With the races they had last weekend they had to make decisions that were in the "critical thinking" category and some that I would place at the same level of difficulty as some medical treatment decisions.  I say this because most of us know how challenging racing can be and when we are faced with something so excruciating and the pain we face and possible injuries that may occur decisions MUST be made.
  • Also, toughness is not that we are able to hold back emotions that well up when we do pull the plug or complete a difficult race.  Toughness is giving in to our emotions when we feel others would laugh or think lesser of us because we are weak.  It is those people who are missing out on what can be learned.  Holding back our emotions at times can be detrimental to us as well as not allowing those close to us to share in our victories and defeats.  There are many lessons that all of us can learn from both of these hard lessons and I don't think we should cheat those we love out of learning these lessons because of our selfish pride.  I say, as that as one who has swallowed the lump n my throat couple of times, that as we lay our hearts bare before others that they can see our passions more deeply and we can inspire them to do greater things than they might have thought possible for themselves.  For this reason we should expose ourselves to open the hearts of others and thereby challenge them to look beyond the 30 feet of mud blocking their path and toward the reward on the other side.

Dirk thanks for posting this, very well said and I could not agree with you more in regards to your definition of toughness. Certainly both Brenda and Matt epitomized and demonstrated that this past weekend.

Matt,  My thoughts are more than thoughts, in my opinion.  What you had to do, to remove yourself from a race that you had spent so much time and effort training for is nothing short of my description of tough.  As you and I sat on the top of that hill talking about your race, I could see how "tough" you had to have been to know you were going to have to DNF.  I didn't spend a lot of time talking to you about what had happened because it was clear that you didn't really need me to remind you of how difficult it had to have been.  I would have been the same way, and like will have the same type of race sometime.

I don't think I was exaggerating at all.  I know that you were passionate about the race!

And lastly, don't sell yourself short!

Matt, I can't possibly agree more with what Dirk is saying.

It is FAR easier to prepare for a race, swim well, bike, well, run well, and finish string, than to be faced with difficult decisions and have to make them 3+ hours into an effort like you had put yourself through, especially after looking forward to that day for 8+ months.  We know what it is to circle the date and wake up at the crack of dawn and run when you don’t want to because you know that day is approaching.

The toughness it took to sit in T2 trying to figure out how to get the shoes on and try to run, then the toughness it took to admit that on this day your body just wasn’t going to do what you had spent so much time, energy, and mental effort preparing to do – that’s a level of toughness I can’t really put into words.  I know that we all will likely face that day, and I only hope that I am tough enough (and wise enough) to do exactly what you did.  I know if and when that happens, I will certainly pull up you and your race day as inspiration to make the tough decision.

It's not that disappointing for me really. I knew I was not trained well for the run. I just feel for all the HIM participants who had probably trained all summer for this event. Tough call but at least calling it off in advance will save some travel and hotel money for out of town people.

And I have a glass in my hand - cheers to the Junkies!!

I see you are coping well with the cancellation of your race.

I have an 11 pack pack of Yuengling in the fridge awaiting me but I am going t wait until the week after next to have a couple of them.  I am definitely not a big drinker and I would rather take in calories that are a little less empty over the next week.

Yeah and it's an 11 pack because I had one last Friday night..........2 days before my race.  I also like Yuengling quite a bit and they don't sell it in Indiana.
