Member 102 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread TankBoy - 2012-06-26 7:59 PM I just received in the mail a whole bunch of BT temporary tattoos. If you want one for race day, drop me a PM with your mailing address and I will stick one in the mail for you. Or alternatively, you can get one from me on the Friday morning before the race at the swim meet-up (we are gonna have the traditional swim meet-up, right????). If you want one, I recommend we wear them on our left calf to make it easy to spot each other on the course. I cannot even BEGIN to describe how awesome it is to get a little encouragement from each other out there - see my previous post. SO, even if you are just lurking on the thread and want one - shoot me a PM - I'll get them to you right away. I'll take one at the swim meet up as well! |

More than likely, your shoes, race belt and/or outfit will have some reflective elements to it. If you do not plan on being out after dark, do not worry about. Personally, I would not worry about it at all (and I have been out after dark before). If you really feel like you want it, any hardware store would carry it. I have seen very little reflective tape out on the course over the years. I have seen in the past some of the neon dayglow sticks that some people would wear around their necks. I would not recommend that either (it attracts the insects). Most of the course is pretty well lit for those of us that will likely finish in the dark. |

They handed them out last year so my guess is they will hand them out this year as well. You can always use the space blankets they hand out as well, they are reflective as well. |

Regular 847 Akron | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I will be using a powertap during the race. When I am doing the race on my bike, should I hit the interval button after the first loop to keep my watts in check or should I hit it every hour? I was also thinking maybe I will divide up the intervals and hit the interval button between the 3 parts (after the descent, at the start of the climb with 22 miles left and the end of the first loop). For those of you that raced it before what did you do? |

Extreme Veteran 486 Syracuse, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread So, MOP Swimmers, I am curious as to how you handle the people who like to hug the left line on the bike. Do you look around and pass on the right if it's clear?... I won't be doing this... Do you cross the yellow line say,"ON YOUR LEFT." then 'politely' say,"STAY RIGHT!"... my sicilian temper can get the better of me at times... Do you just say,"On your left." and nothing else and hope that they don't hurt anyone (or themselves) and just hope that a marshall sees them? I tend to cater to this... I've just heard some stories about mindless cyclists bikers who enter this race and "don't like" to keep right. Especially down Keene... Since I will be coming out of the swim at 1:20-1:30 I know I will be passing quite a few people on the bike. I've also heard the magic number is about 1:10 to not have a huge crowd to pass in T1 and descending Keene. That's too aggressive a number for me. I will most likely be 40-45 per lap.. unless I catch a sweet draft then I'll be 1:19... lol |

So I will be passing people on the bike as this is my strongest discipline. Im a smaller person so I tend to get passed on the flats but pass a lot on the hills. I happen to be very considerate and most other people are as well. However, sometimes I need a reminder as my mind and lane drifts. This will not be the case on the descent to Keene as I will be very attentive. Overall, I will be courteous the first and even a second time but if it happens further, with the same rider, I start to yell and spew trucker talk. This has happened many times in Oly races but not so much in HIM's and hopefully in the fulls. The faster pace in shorter races makes everyone more aggressive. I hope there wont be many instances. This ^^ I'll also say this and it is similar to what Rusty had written in regards to the BT tattoos... This is based on only 1 IM experience but it was all very friendly. Lots of chatting while passing and being passed on the bike leg. I found everyone to be very supportive and friendly. With the exception of a few dark moments, my 1st IM was a complete joy. I had fun from start to finish. July 22nd will, truly, be a celebration of all of the hard work that we have put into this race as well as the committment and support that our families have contributed to make it possible.

I agree... and I also have to remind myself that even though I may have said "on your left" 500 times it is probably 500 different people I am saying it to. But, that being said, since I am a bigger guy I get passed going up hills but I pass on flats and descents and I normally see the people who passed me going up the hill again. In a sprint, 12 mile bike, I played leap frog with one girl. I think we passed eachother 5 times... after the final descent I didn't see her again until mile 1 of the run where she passed me and I didn't see her again until the finish. I know it will be a great day and I will be as happy and cordial as I can... as being cantankerous will only zap me of more energy. |

I would be curious to hear from the experience cyclists, what tires you ride on. After flatting this weekend, I am going to swap out my tires. Am thinking about "Vittoria Randonneur Hyper Tire". Experience with others? I would like to balance puncture resistance with speed. I'm not "fast" but fast enough to not want to slow down, yet I really would like some protection against lousy roads. Thoughts on this? Thanks.

I'm going to get in the middle of BooTri and Major BC for the swim since they are aiming for the same time I am. Maybe I can get in the middle and they can blast the people around me so I don't get hit? lol. I'm so little you won't even know I'll be there. You can be like my body guards! Can you tell I'm a little skeered!??? |

Extreme Veteran 801 Ballston Spa, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Ok IM experts...I need some advice. I haven't entered the log yet from my run last night so don't go looking for it. But I had a HR based run that was VERY strange. 20 warmup I was DONE when I got done with the run. Scheduled was 2hr 10 min (I think if you add everything up). Like so done that I took a recovery bath. I BARELY covered 11 miles during these 2 hours. Is my body telling me that it's massively fatigued and ready to tapper or what here? 11 miles is NOTHING for me and has been nothing for me for over a year. This has me a bit nervous as we are only 3 weeks away and I can barely run 11 miles...? |

For those of you that raced it before what did you do? This will be my first IM attempt and my 1st season with a PT. What would hitting interval button on the first loop after the descent with tell you what exactly? The run to jay is flat so just keep the watts in check. If I were to hit the interval button during the loop it would be turning onto rt.9 as uphills is where we can cook youselves, especially the 1st loop. BUT we'll only be 30miles into the race so AP/NP will move if your cooking it. The last 12miles might be a good section to hit interval since 40miles is where your AP/NP don't move as quickly and if your not eying your current power your could layout a solid 5-10mins above power. I'm heading up this weekend for a final run and will think about when/where to hit intervals.

Expert 696 Sugar Hill, GA | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Cornick and everyone counting the swim strokes, pedal rotations, and run steps to the end of taper, I've only done one other IM so I will not consider myself an expert just someone with limited experience. We're in the last week of peak and we are tapped out. I just took 2 unscheduled days off and did a fun run this morning b/c, w/o realizing it, my overtrained state was affecting all aspects of my life. Look at my log and you'll get an inkling of an idea of my mental state the last few days. I'm still tired but at least I've got my mental mojo back. Just as I did leading into Louisville, I'm getting slower and slower and feeling weaker and weaker. Last week I did a ride and averaged under 15 mph and was DONE after. The same route a few weeks ago I averaged 18mph going kinda easy then followed the ride with a 13 mile run and finished tired but ready to get back to training after 1 day of rest. I can't even come close to conveying how strong, fast, and ready to go you will feel those last few days before Lake Placid. I started Louisville feeling like a race horse trapped in the gates anxiously waiting to race. We discuss it a lot here, that we should ride the first lap easy...I'm telling you now, riding easy will be a challenge b/c you will feel so good. Revel in the fatigue, know that the end is just a couple days away, and trust that you are incredibly prepared for a phenominal experience on race day.
