Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Re-OPENED for Training
At this point my injury was most likely caused by a cramp and bad timing. That said, I would say proper stretching and nutrition are important. A few years ago when I was fighting quadriceps tendonitis I was going to PT for awhile. The stretches and light workouts did wonders for me.

Not sure if I would have injured myself if I had stuck to the regimen of stretches that I was taught. I am starting them again because they did make a difference and nothing reminds you better than an injury. Proper stretch exercises don't have the same feeling as a good workout but they do have a lot of benefit.

Nutrition is also important. I know my diet isn't perfect and if I don't make sure to have some OJ, banana's etc (potassium) then my cramps eventually return.

Sometime at the beginning of this thread I posted or emailed a copy of the stretching exercises that my PT provided. I will track them down and repost. I was a bit surprised when my PT told me that I was doing some of the stretches incorrectly. Proper technique is important.

Hope this helps

Yes Gary, it helps and I can easily relate.  A couple of years ago I did a 40 mile bike ride ... went out waay too fast, ran out of water halfway, no goos or other nutrition during the ride and barely scraped back to the car.  Once I got home, I got huge cramps at the same time, deep down in both legs ... excruciating!  Similarly this past spring I did a metric century and at ~50 miles out started to get a cramp in one leg ... twitching started way down deep in the inner thigh-quad area.  I was able to baby it and made it back without a full-on cramp.  I thought I'd ingested plenty of water and nutrition, but obviously not.  If anyone has had these deep, inner thigh quad cramps - they understand pain.

Similar to your diagnosis, my cramps were due to lack of hydration and/or fuel during long bike rides.  You can't emphasize enough the importance of drinking and eating during long bike rides and/or runs. You don't eat or drink because you're hungry or thirsty ... if you get to this point it's already to late.  You eat and drink to keep fuel in the tank; to maintain performance and energy; and most important - stay hydrated.

I'd like to see your info on stretching and start to work this into my routines.  Glad you're doing better too.

Over this way, it's been cold in the mornings ... the ground was covered w/ frost this morning.  So, it's time for me to switch up to mountain biking in lieu of the roadie.  I'll load Knobby up in the cold, crisp morning for a ~1.5 hour ride.

Ciao all!

Hey all the change in weather has me all outa whack! Little to no energy and little to no training. With my first marathon in 3 months and 2 weeks I really have to dig deep and find some motivation. Is anyone else experiencing the same issues?

As for the lack of motivation, I have had that a couple of times. Usually takes a really good run or two to get past it. Just get yourself out there a couple of times. The key is do a fun workout, if you feel like riding but the plan says run just ride. It's okay to have fun as part of training.

Saw a specialist today and just confirmed that it is an injured calf. Prescribed PT and is sending me to a place with an anti-gravity treadmill. Not exactly sure what that is but sounds cool. PT may just be the perfect thing for me at this point.

Started PT today. Therapist says I will be on the zero G treadmill next week. Hopefully back to regular running in a few weeks. Actually I am more interested in getting back on the bike but it will come.

It's been a while since I last posted.

October was a complete waste... slacked on both diet and exercise.  But, November is a new month and I've got some extra tools and motivation.  I singed up for a local tri club and they do weekly group workouts in each discipline.  This has been the first week of those workouts and it's been great having coaches there to lead you.  I did VO2 testing and got my HR zones for both bike and run.  Lastly, I picked up a personal coach to help guide me.

First few weeks have been great and I'm looking forward to seeing some good results.

Wow, some very cool and useful stuff you are doing. Interested in what the coach has you doing.

Swam today, limited the kicking and mainly used pull buoy. Was nice to get back at it. PT tomorrow.

Hey guys,

First off - sorry for being AWOL. Personal discipline is an issue for me.

Well, the gloves are off, the gauntlet has been thrown and the money is on the table. My daughter (22) has made a bet with me that I can't go 1 year without booze AND to do a Half-Iron within a year...... It's ON! So, naturally I immediately signed up for the first annual Niagara Falls 70.3 on September 21, 2014. (help!)

So, October 31, 2013 was my last beer and I have swim, bike and run programs in place. I've already had a physical exam (results = excellent & Doctor knows about the bet) so, I'm going to need all the 'inspires' I can get! I'll be on here regularly from now on.

We already have about 2 inches of snow here, so the bike is already mounted on the trainer for the winter.

Bring it on!

Part II:

Question - Yesterday I did 16km on the bike and the middle toes on both my feet went completely numb. This is not a new thing, but I need to ask what you think may be going on with this? Any possible remedies? I can't imagine doing a run after a 90km ride with completely numb toes.

Part III:

My wife has decided to get in on the action. She can't swim, so it's been decided that her goal race is the Olympic Duathlon in Bracebridge next August. She's all decked out with equipment and currently runs 5km a day on the treadmill. She's computer illiterate, but I'm going to teach her how to use BT.com SweetPeanut All inspires GREATLY appreciated!!!!

Cheers!

Panther- Fantastic news!

On the numb toes one suggestion would be to take the bike to a fitter and tell them your issue. The pedals could be adjusted wrong. I had an issue where they had to put a spacer in my left pedal to compensate.

Good luck!

I have to also promise to be here more. Work has been killer that last few months and add being on the injured list does not help.

Sorry about above post. I was in wife's account.

Anyway.... Here's the proper post:

Weirdness all around. Middle toes go numb on the run too.

My tibia's are significantly bowed, so I'm assuming this has a lot to do with it. I run with high end Asics and my bike shoes are very good too, so......

I agree with going back to the bike fitting guy, but should I see a sports doc or maybe a podiatrist to see if I need some 'shims' or something?

I know my running technique sucks, but I'm just trying to build some cardio/stamina/endurance before I go crazy on the form aspect of things.

Hey all!
Went to PT yesterday and today things are feeling pretty decent for the first time in weeks. Cautiously happy.

As for the Dr and Bike fitter. Going to the Dr is never a bad idea especially if there are underlying medical conditions. But I would be hard pressed to find many Dr's that are knowledgable enough about bike fittings to discuss shims for the pedal. You won't know until you are on the bike and your fit is being examined. The Dr may tell you that one leg is a bit shorter than the other but probably would not know how many, if any, shims you may need. I could be wrong on this. Either way I would discuss with a Dr, specifically a sports Dr if you can.

Nice! It will be good to get back in the saddle.

Hey coach, do you have any opinion on taking in added oxygen? I happen to own an oxygen machine and was wondering if it would be more beneficial to take in extra oxygen during a training session (on the trainer or on the treadmill) or after the session (while relaxed) for recovery? Any thoughts?

Would it assist in more rapid growth and development of the cardio system?

Also, I use a Tacx Fortius trainer and among a ton of other things, it tracks watts. Can anyone point me to an article or somewhere that I can learn about watts, what it means and how I can use that information?

Thanks.

Hey all!
Still doing PT and have started doing easy rides on the trainer and swam today. Only 1100 yards but its a start. Leg feels okay and hope to start running soon. Hope everyone's training is going well.

As for the question on watt's there are a couple of books on this and some articles. Let me look to see if I can track that down.

Ran on Thanksgiving and ran today. Short distances but I ran. PT cleared me and I am going slow but was nice to run. Wasn't nice to find out how out of shape I was. Looking at my first tri of 2014 being a sprint in April.

Muscle memory is a wonderful thing. You'll be back in shape in no time.

Hey all!

Slowly ramping back up. Today was my first two-workout day with a 1500 yard swim and a 1.5 mile run. Slow but steady. Temps here dropped but probably better than most on this board with lows in the 30's.

Take care all!

Yeah, I did a run this morning somewhere around -2 with a slight wind.  I was supposed to run tomorrow, but didn't feel like dealing with -15.  Ahh Minnesota in winter...

Hey all!
Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! I had a great Christmas and we did a whole bunch of fun stuff. As an interesting side note I decided to give BT's online coaching a try for 2014. I am a bit tired of just finishing and placing well only because of a lite AG field. We shall see how this goes.
