I am buying stud, what about our ride in March?  Decided, I think, on the HIM relay in New Orleans, I am doing the swim leg and the run with my buddy doing the bike.

thanks!! Gary, I don't know about a slice, you are the opposing team's QB... how would it look? lol

Billy, nice job on the workout today!

Mav, I admire your resolve against cold temps and winds! I don't think i could bike in SUCH cold weather.... wow!

Gary, nicely done!

on my front... you guys may or may not know from my log, but i totally overtrained (don't know how I didn't think it would happen) and when my legs and my bum shin kept aching 24 hours a day, I sort of accepted that fact. So, for the last week, I did nothing. Rest was good, but I also feel like i've been gone from BT for months. Just from standing on my feet for 2 days and making that cake and those fondant roses, my shin got pretty unhappy, so I decided it may be time to face the music and go see an appropriate doc. I posted a thread earlier about a sports injury doctor, and got a good local recommendation, and today, made an appt for next Monday night.

On John's recommendation, I'll do a trial 2 mile run tomorrow or Wed (depending on when I can get an infant room reservation at LTF) and see how my shin feels and reevaluate. I do still plan to bike twice (providing it doesn't hurt my shin) and swim twice and do yoga and pilates. Wish my shin luck!

Lena, good idea to get that checked out. In the interim I would just bike and swim...no need to stress your shins.

Had yet another wonderful bike yesterday. Temps in the 40's without much wind. Unfortunately we are getting snow all week! Looks like very little biking outdoors for a whileCry.

I have a 10K race this weekend. Was supposed to be dong a 1/2, but my back wont allow it. Should be lots of fun. Many BTers from MA CT and RI doing the race.

Lena, I've had to deal with the shin issue as well.  I bought a brace online at footsmart.com, Pro-Tec Shin Splint Compression Wrap, that made all the difference in the world.  I had a pretty bad case, but was able to train through it using the brace and lots of ice in the evening.  I even used ice several times throughout the day when it was really bad.  It helped so much that I was able to run a marathon wearing the brace followed by a half marathon one month later without the brace.  I keep it handy just in case but don't have to wear it anymore.  But, just in case you are not able to run with the brace, let me know, you can make Gary's team a victory cake.  I can give you some ideas, maybe in the shape of a WHO DAT!

Good luck on the shin.

Ok, Billy...
thanks for the brace recommendation, I will definitely check it out.. I used to wear a ThermoSkin wrap almost on all runs, now I switched to Zensah compression sleeve, and it makes a world of difference. But i'll check out your brace and there is also a compression tape I saw advertised in Women's Running magazine. I'll probably get both.

***warning: begin smacktalk here***

As far as the cake... Buddy, you have NO idea what you are talking about. I will gladly make y'all a cake, but it will be in the WHO DAT LOSERS shape. I may not be able to run, but I'll swim and bike and yoga you into second place. How about THAT?

***end smack talk here. resume nice talk now***

Billy, your story about running the marathon and half with the shin issues gives me hope!!! i really hope I can still run mine.. I'm so there emotionally, it would be devastating if i have to skip it But, i'm not thinking that now and will stick to hope I can still make it. This doc I'm seeing is also highly recommended and is a serious athlete himself, so I trust he'll know how to fix me up good

Lena,

Thanks for the picture of the cake.  I would have never been able to cut that thing up.  Wow!  That was awesome.  How many calories were in the flowers????  I know you are fighting this shin issue but keep up the positive attitude.  You will be back soon.  See what the dr. says.

Hope everyone's training is going well.  I can't wait to get my bike outside.

Lena, that cake is BEAUTIFUL

Just got back from our company health fair - my weight was down 6 lbs from last year, my blood pressure and glucose were both in the good range. My Total Cholesterol was excellent, but my HDL went down again   it's been a struggle for me to keep that number up... I was told that exercise & red wine help with that, I guess I'm not drinking enough red wine?

Worked out with my trainer again last night - went well... bike ride tonight - hopefully outside

Lena, about the shins... I had 2 stress fractures on my right tibia (after the only Marathon that I ran) ever since, I've had horrible shin splints... I've tried rest, toe taps, stretching, etc, ART (active release technique) treatment, I haven't tried the sleeve yet, but MRI's showed significant swelling near or on my bone (didn't quite understand it) so, I'm taking extended time off from running to let it heal completely. My doctor suggested that I give up running forever... I'm not ready quite yet to do that... I guess the sleeve is next...   anyway, I understand your frustration, and your pain... shins hurt a lot!!! Keep us informed about what your doctor says.

John, thanks... the flowers were made from fondant and gum paste-both are types of a sugar paste, so probably not as bad as buttercream would be, but sugary enough lol
I've been making cakes for Nikita's birthdays every year, so i'm used to the shock of two days of work going under a knife and gone in 2 hours lol My therapy is lots of pictures.. and cake.

Diane, thanks for the compliments!
I will go with the theory you are not drinking enough red wine. Health is important, so bottoms up, girl!!!!!! Come for a visit, and I will make sure you get quality therapy (hehehehe).

Shins... i would HIGHLY recommend trying a sleeve. ThermoSkin worked nicely for me, and i love the Zensah! I think anything with compression will help you a ton. It sucks that you are having SUCH issues... i think you are wise to let it heal and then pick back up slowly. I do hope you can resume running fully! And personally, I would find another dr if he's suggesting giving up running-that would be devastating!!! At least get a second (and third, and fourth) opinion... and of course, keep smoking us all on Hoke!

I am not sure but did Lena just challenge me to a personal competition?  Please, I need some clarification from this board because I am getting ready to put on my real gameface. Wink

i was speaking as a team, really, but heck, I'll go against Billy. (i should probably not, but can't back down now, can I?)

LOL

(the original post had more stuff in it that doesn't show, weird. Does the board delete everything that is surrounded by "<" and ">" ?)

So, when does the challenge begin and what did the QBs decide on? I hope I didn't miss something important, because then I would feel really silly..

Lena - fantastic cake!! Two of my fave shows at the moment are "Ace of Cakes" and "Cake Boss" - your creation certainly rivals what I have seen them produce!!

Non Tri Related ...

What a day for Canada at the Olympics yesterday!! Gold and Silver in Women's Bobsleigh, Silver in Women's Short-track speedskating and Bronze in women's long track speedskating. Then to top it off Canada thumped Russia in the quarterfinals of men's hockey. A USA-Canada rematch for the Gold medal could be ahead. Plus Canada-USA for Women's hockey Gold.

A bit of trivia - the Bronze in the long track speedskating was the 6th Olympic medal that this person, Clara Hughes, has won in her career. Four have been at winter games, the other 2 in cycling at summer games. No other olympian has apparently ever won multiple medals at both summer and winter games.

Another bit of trivia - the Gold medallist in Bobsleigh is the second gold medallist in the same sport to come from my beloved province of Prince Edward Island with a total population of only 170,000 people and no hills, let alone mountains. What are the chances of that happening?

I'm not reading Pete's post, I'm behind on watching the Olympics, and I don't want too many spoilers

This week has been pretty pathetic training wise. I just don't seem to be motivated when I have time... I'm motivated fine while at work  LOL  I'm thinking of asking for different hours at work, so I can get my training done in the morning, then it's done for the day... and if I want to do something in the evening, it frees me up without guilt... used to be easier when i could run in the mornings, but cycling takes up way more time to prepare for, then I have more dark/light issues to deal with. I can run in the dark much easier/safer than riding.  I just hate the thought of having to work later

LOL! I had my first bike crash last night......on the trainer.  Evidently didn't tighten down the mount to the trainer and around minute 52 I started going over.  Luckily I unclipped and caught myself.   Was able to get setup on the trainer again before the Sag wagon came by.
