I can't seem to get the idea of doing an IM out of my head.  There are moments when I think " I should give it a try, I think I could do this" Those times are usually when I am watching the BOPs' finishing the IM on TV or online. Then there are other times when I think "No way do I want to do that!" (I think this when I imagine being mauled in the swim, see the people collapsing at the finish line or read race reports where there has been extreme suffering to the point of multiple IVs and/or hospitalization. Also the amount of training seems a bit daunting. (of course doing anything beyond a sprint tri seemed that way at one point in my life).
I have to admit that another reason I have been thinking about this a lot is that I have a friend who is battling what looks like to be a losing fight with Cancer and she often speaks about the importance of living in the here and now, doing what you want to do now.. don't wait to live life.

I recently started working with a coach and am learning that what I thought was the beginning of burn out was really just me being VERY frustrated about the lack of running improvement and going through a season of training and racing "alone" (in the past years I had friends who did this with me. They stopped and I kept going) and with a medical issue (dental infection and two dental surgeries) that took a lot out of me in many ways. Once I got off the phone with the coach after our initial talk, I was excited again. It was like a light switch was turned on.  (that is a good sign I think).

I wonder if the fact that I go back and forth on the idea of an IM vs. saying with conviction "I want to do an IM" is an indicator that I should wait or if that is a normal reaction when contemplating something this big. I mean what is the rush right?

And the other thing... what race would I do?   I don't know about to many of them (only what I read) and I am assuming most of the ones that have opened are already sold out.  I think about IM Arizona since it is close and flatter then many but then there is IM FL.  I don't know of any others that are still available.
Thanks for letting me ramble. I figured if any group of people would understand what I am thinking, you all would.
If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I would love to hear them.

Kathleen,

If you are thinking about doing an Ironman this much, you have already decided to do one.  Your fears may be trying to rationalize that it is not a good idea, but we don't let our fears guide us. (that sounds like a quote out of star wars ) .  Get in in your head that you plan to do one and prepare accordingly.  You've been a consistently training and you should be prepared to enter an Ironman block.

About which IM,  it all depends on cost and time away.  IMAZ, IMTX, and IMSG are the closest, but I would rule out IMSG since you'd have to train in the snow and its a very hard course.   I don't know much about IMTX, except it may get hot.  Then again, so may IMAZ.  Right now, I'd say IMAZ, but then there's IMCozumel, Cour'de Alene, and Florida which are fairly flat as well.  Lake Placid and Wisconsin have some hills, and are probably not so difficult I'd shy away but you'd have to ask  the others about those.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do, and I look forward to you decision!

Totally agree that if you are already thinking that much about it then you have decided to do one!

With about a month out from signing up for IMAZ I still go back and forth from day to day about if I'm going to sign up or not (even though I know I will). When I'm feeling down, like this week when I've had the flu and it's been a chore to move myself from the sofa to the bed and back again, wonder how I could even begin to handle the training. But when I'm taking to my friends who have done IM's or when I'm doing a great long workout (like last week's 16 mile run) I have no doubt that I can handle the training. I think it takes a bit of a leap or faith to sign up for an IM, but you with a year to prepare it's definitely doable.

I'll put in my vote for IMAZ, 2011! Wink

Thanks so much for your thoughts about the IM!  I really appreciate it.

So, I have now read and or scanned almost every 2009 IM Arizona race report and am thinking that that is the best race for me.  I am also considering volunteering but really need to find out how that would work at this late date. Does anyone know if volunteers have to be there days before?  I will just be returning from FL on that Friday. I know I don't need to volunteer but I think it would be a great experience.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

PennState - 2010-10-17 4:40 PM Just an update on myself:

I have decided to go with a coach for 2011. I started training for tri's in 2006 and have only been coached for 1 year (2008). I liked being coached a lot, but because of injury I backed away. It's also fairly expensive as well.

I have done some research and will be hiring a coach that is not local to the area. I will be training with power as well. So yes, some new things for me in 2011.

I have some pretty aggressive goals for 2011. I don't know if I will reach them, but I'm going to give it a really good try.

Good for you and the coaching.  Since your choice wasn't someone local, how did you find him/her?  If I am to take the training with power to what I should be doing with it, I think I need some guidance.  I don't know that I need a full time coach, but there really aren't at this point any plans here that deal with power.

So far so good.  Under 3 weeks so a I am a little bit paranoid of people with colds, riding in less than perfect conditions, etc.

Very very cool Fred. Have you decided which power meter you will be going with?

FWIW...i think its fantastic you are setting aggressive goals. get ready to surprise yourself

Kathy- I volunteered at IM Lake Placid the year before.  I truly feel that it helped me for my own big day... you just get that much more excited seeing what you are training for.  It's a very rewarding experience.  I showed up the day before, camped out two nights and went home after I registered.  We gave our top three volunteer position choices and then the time slots.  You could work your shift around your schedule, for sure!

Very exciting Ken.  I'm too late (since I assume you already did it), but I'll say just for general edification...  be very careful on that long run the day after a very taxing long ride.  It's the perfect opportunity to get injured at the worst time possible.  Listen to your body and remember that no single workout will make your race much better at this point, but that a single workout does have the potential to break your race at this point.

I see a place for "race rehearsal" workouts and even epic weekends (although frankly I'm too conservative to have near-race-distance workouts back to back at all in my own schedule)... but they make me nervous just before taper begins considering how little room for error there is.

It is tough to manage the nutritional intake when you ramp up your volume.  Even tougher to manage it when the volume drops off for recovery weeks.

Glad to hear you are back at it again.  Be careful!

I apreciate your feed back Josh, I kept yours and the others advice in the back of my mind throughout both workouts, but especially the run.

It has been difficult to manage the food intake with reduced training post IM.  Seems like it will take awhile to curb the hunger to match my current lack of training

I did get an e-mail from the Ironman folks stating they received my application for the IMWI slots.  They did not provide a time-line on when to expect an answer.  The Madison Police department is actually making the choices and putting the event together.
