KASIA -

I'm sorry you had the car thing, but I gotta tell you that from where I'm sitting, it was fun reading your account of how you managed to learn in the process. I'm still grininng....and feeling guilty that my enjoymant is coming at the expense of your wee accident. I'll try hard to wipe that grin off my face!

(Can't quite succeed......)

My last bunch of cars have been ones I drive til they drop, which means that any cosmetic things that happen to them don't affect anything beyond how they look. That is, I'm not trying to sell them at some sort of profit, so those dings and scartches that just happen because they're cars and it's an imperfect world? So it goes! C'est la vie!

Was the bike ride a good one?

Steve,

It looks like a fairly big not huge race. Last year there were 516 finishers and 545 the year before. I just went ahead and registered AG figuring I wasn't going to set any records anyway and I'd place where I placed. The size of the two groups were similar.

Steve, thanks for your input on the HIM and I have decided to hold off. I did read about the Miami issue the other day and I did see where WTC took over the race, I hope it will be better.  There are a few HIM that Im looking at for next year (Augusta - I heard it was a good beginner course since you swim down stream, New Orleans - Just because it's close to home 2 1/2 hours, Orlando - Be a fun place to take the family for vacation and race, and of course Miami - I just love that place down there, I lived there for about 5 years when i was younger and the Cuban food is awesome).  I guess i will pick the race depending on where we are financially.  As for doing the race, I want to do good, its not just a finish thing where I can tell everyone that I did it.  I want to go out there and lay it all on the pavement and just give all I can, that is where the enjoyment will come from.  I'm going to stick to my original plan for 2010 which is 4 sprints, 1 oly and 1 I guess you called it an international (.5mile swim, 27.5 bike and 7mile run) and then finish the year with a half marathon.

As for the leg, I went this morning and did a 16.38 mile ride followed by a 2.1 mile brick.  Leg felt good, no pain on the run.  Bike was 1hr 2min (worked out on hills) and the run was 23min.  Im scheduled for just a run tomorrow morning, so will see how it goes.

It includes a lot of fruit, veggies, nuts, lean red meat, poultry, fish.

Sounds delicious, and what I'm trying to transform my diet into. And also sounds very non-restrictive, so I may have to check the book out from the library to see what it's all about. Wow, and it is definitely NOT vegetarian. Geez, the whole website has legs of lamb and ribs and all sorts of deliciousness. I may be convinced!

That's a decent size -- maybe about perfect, in fact. Enough people so there's lots of vibe, but not so many as to make you feel like one of the livestock in the Chicago stockyards in about 1937. Or something like that?

Just curious -- how many in your a.g. there last year?

Those were the sticking points for me.....but I thought that if I just upped my training considerably, I could get around the grain issue (I need my bagels!!!!!). Three-a-day workouts seemed tempting, thinking of it that way!

There were 19 in my AG last year 13 in Clydes 40+. There are a lot of events going on over the weekend. I think its going to be lots of fun. This will really be my first major event. Last years was really small like about 50 or 60 in the Tri, they also had a 10mi mountain run and a fir number of people doing that but they were on a different course.

GEORGE -

I have many issues with WTC, but I have to give them full marks for how quickly they were on that Miami problem last year. I was their race last year, technically, but they kind of "leased out" the management responsibilities to that other group. This year, they know exactly who is running it, and it will be run well -- or at least in keeping with how they generally run races. (But don't get me started!)

And that refund matter was exceptional, almost above-and-beyond. They could've taken a "so it goes" approach, and they didn't. Bravo to them!

You've nailed it for Augusta, and most people like the bike, too. the run has some problems, as it is two loops looooong blocks that are supposedly tedious and potentilly heat and sun sinks. But if I lived closer to there, thta's one I would do in a heartbeat.

New Orleans is another I am itching to do. The swim at the base of Lake Ponch can be dicey, and some people have complained about thr run -- why, i don't really understand, as it is point-to-point and finishes in Jackso Square. The aprt I do understand is having to get back up to the lake to collect your gear and all from transition; nobody much likes that hassle.

Reading your intention for the eventual half-iron, you are definitely wise to wait until season two. As I said before, anyone can finish one of them with absolutely minimal training, but to do as well as possible comes from cumulative training and acquired experience. Your schedule for this season is beautiful for getting you ready for next season -- and come to think of it, it's beautiful just standing there all on its own.

And! The new photo is great!

Expansive event! And with so many peers around you, there'll be lots of opportunity for age-appropriate yakking. Sounds very fine!

I'm kind of with George thinking about a HIM next year we'll see. If I do I was considering one in Portland that I think was just taken over by Rev3, its on July 10 this year. Do you think it would be possible prudent/wise to do the PCT oly at the end of June followed by a HIM 2 weeks later?

I don't think going hardcore on the diet is what I am going to do, I need my morning oatmeal.  I have been trying to get at least 3 of my 5 meals according to the diet guidelines.  It is still incredibly difficult to not succumb to my random cravings of Peanut/Hazelnut Butter.

How do I tell if the wetsuit I got is too big?  From what I read when putting on a wetsuit it should be "work" I did get the DeSoto 2 piece so maybe that makes it easier but I am a little worried I got a size too big.  Anyone know how to tell?

stevebradley - 2011-05-11 5:57 AM ALEX - For the obvious reasons, I hope you don't have a torn mensicus. The one I had in '06 cost me my tri season*, but I compensated for it by doing the aquabikes -- the swim and bike, but not the run. This is an event that is fully recognized by USAT, and many triathlons will have it as a part of that actual same event -- most people will do the full tri, but others will do the aqbk option. *Quick to add this! My tear was longitudinal, quite rare and non-scopeable. It can be repaired, but not by scoping, and as the repair requires removal of much of the cartilage, it obviously is not desirable. Your doc is right, though, in saying that many scopings can result in pretty quick recoveries, and I hope that's how it is for you. It's also true that all those other things can be done, such as swimming and cycling and upper-body weight-work, and I used my non-running time in '06 to become a many-times better cyclist. Look at all those silver linings! Keep me posted as to what is decided about your knee, please! Also, keep me informed about your forays with water running. It will make you feel very disciplined to do that. Possibly even righteous!

Alex,

If the meniscus is repairable do it, even if it means a more involved surgery with more recovery time.  Scoping and removing is easier and quicker, but you will miss that meniscus later, it's there for a very important reason.

Nice time on that 5km! Now that you're sub-25......when are you aiming for sub-24 (that 21 seconds can't seem too daunting to you at all!)?

You've worked like a demon on your run, and it doesn't surprise me that you made some big gains. That's a sweet reward for your efforts!

In general, you don't want any obvious extra material. That is, it shouldn't be bunching anywhere after you get it all snugged-up.

The obvious places to look are behind the knees, around you armpits and down a bit along your sides, and around the waist. Overall, it should be tight, and bordering on constrictive, but not to the point where breathing seems difficult.

The great thing about DeSoto is their customer service, so even if you bought it through a retailer and they don't want to do an exchange, DeSoto can probably help you out. At the very least they could send you the next size down to try. So maybe put it on, keep it snugged-up perfectly, and give them a call while you're standing there wetsuit-clad and describe how it is fitting you. I can promise you that you're not the first person who has done that!

Thanks!  I am not sure what is actually going on, the Dr said it is possibly a tear but I haven't scheduled an MRI yet.  I am hoping the Anti-Inflammatory meds work and I can work on strengthening the muscles to stabilize my knee better.  I am sure I don't want it removed!  Having a little shock absorption is better than none.

I will definitely do that.  I guess I have read such interesting posts about getting into the wetsuit that when I tried mine on it wasn't really a struggle to put on so I guess I am assuming that I got one too large.

Thanks,

I wasn't aiming for that but was under a time crunch to get home for dinner, my Mom is in town-it just happened!

There is a little local 5k race this weekend in the small town of Howe-if I can repeat that run maybe I have a fighting shot at an AG placing, depending on who shows up

I have a nutrition question. I was looking at some calorie calculators to see approximately how many calories I would burn during my race in June. The long and the short of it was somewhere close to 4000 for the entire race.

How many calories do I want to take in during the race? the breakdown is something like this

Swim - 700

Bike - 2200

Run - 1200

I understand there is no way to consume that many calories while racing. There is a limit to how many you can consume per hour. Steve will have more elaborate insight.

You wont consume any calories while swimming That means 2900c on the bike-almost 30 Gu's! or whatever

You are going to have to rely on proper pre race nutrition to help cover some of the deficit.
