There is probably a good textbook-type answer that is in variance with my own oly nutrition plan -- which is either minimalistic, or slack, depending on who is viewing it. I will get back to you about this. |

I was looking at some calorie calculators to see approximately how many calories I would burn during my race in June. The long and the short of it was somewhere close to 4000 for the entire race. How many calories do I want to take in during the race? the breakdown is something like this Swim - 700 Bike - 2200 Run - 1200 I understand there is no way to consume that many calories while racing. There is a limit to how many you can consume per hour. Steve will have more elaborate insight. You wont consume any calories while swimming You might consume some on the swim depending on how gunky the water is and how much water you swallow, just saying. |

That is, it shouldn't be bunching anywhere after you get it all snugged-up. The obvious places to look are behind the knees, around you armpits and down a bit along your sides, and around the waist. Overall, it should be tight, and bordering on constrictive, but not to the point where breathing seems difficult. The great thing about DeSoto is their customer service, so even if you bought it through a retailer and they don't want to do an exchange, DeSoto can probably help you out. At the very least they could send you the next size down to try. So maybe put it on, keep it snugged-up perfectly, and give them a call while you're standing there wetsuit-clad and describe how it is fitting you. I can promise you that you're not the first person who has done that! I can vouch for DeSoto customer service. I bought my top with sleeves at a local shop. The top was too big even though I tried it on and they said it was the correct size. I had water streaming through the wetsuit top. I tried to exchange it for a smaller one but the shop didn't want to exchange it without some additional money for a new one (they tabbed the old one used). I emailed DeSoto to explain my problem with the retailer. DeSoto called me back and said they would contact the retailer to get the top exchanged at no cost. The retailer contacted me and the swap was made in less than a day! DeSoto can really help you with sizing your tops and bottoms correctly especially if you seem to fall between two sizes. Very customer oriented! |

But even if it really is cockiness......I'm hoping you win the age group. Have a good one! The best i will come to a long lake swim is to get out and measure the temp in the Rideau River. I expect it will still be too cold by a fair bit for swimming, so that'll be that for another week or so (a solid week of rain or showers for here). Last year's first swim there was on the 17th, but that spring was early and this was late, so I expect no miracles. In fact, when I go do the temp, I won't even bother lugging my wetsuit along. |

Probably- changes in saddle height are supposed to be done cautiously for the reason you mentioned-the knees. Not sure what to do but another fitting or have someone take a look? I know my position has issues, the fitting I had to set my road bike up is now 11 years old and I spend way more time on the aero bars than I used to. It really isn't a good TT or tri position but a compromise. I struggle with little "sensations" in places that shouldn't be having "sensations during a bike ride |

I never got warmed up the way I like but did run a bit. Went out fast and settled into a pace I could hold. I never felt real good but that was because I was running much faster than I normally do. I thought I was 3rd or 4th judging by the bald heads ahead of me but at least one turned out to be in the next age group up and the other got the overall at 18.xx. I am satisfied with the result and happy to get the "hardware" my first in a very long time, I have a small collection from my cycling days. |

I'm basing that on the 24:20 a few days ago being on a 3.06 course, whereas let us just assume that today's was on a rigorously and scrupulously measured course of EXACTLY 3.1 miles. So, those 14 seconds today more than account for the .04 difference, and lest I be mistaken that is a new PR. Ta-da! Congrats on settling on a solid and sustainable pace very early on -- not an easy thing to do. It's kind of like an arete -- narrow path, with vast drops off to either side. That is, the "right" pace is pretty tight within a few seconds either way, but beyond that tight range the margin of error is wide. You can either go out too fast and blow up in short order, or finish feeling fresh as a daisy and realize you left a LOT in the tank. So, what's the celebrational plan? Ya gotta have one, you know! (And if not an actual plan, then an ad hoc celebration of some kind.) |

Decided not to play washing machine so I went for a 20 mile bike. I guess number 13 is not unlucky because 16 is. This is the 2nd time I got a flat on a ride at mile 16. What is the normal life of tire? I guess it really depend on the tire and how it is made but just on an average, when do you replace them? Since there is no tread and they are slick, I have no idea. Did a 2 mile run today and legs and cardio were good, but nutrition was not, I had plans to take a gel, but forgot to. Have a great day everyone I replace tires when I start getting frequent flats-especially "mystery" flats. I know people complain about their weight and ride quality but I love my 'dillos. The last one I replaced was ten years old-the tread was separating-never flatted. Maybe they make you an nth slower but fixing a flat makes you minutes slower. |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGEORGE - I think it's a complete roll of the dice -- tire life, that is. The specific tire matters....but only until something gouges into it. My favorite tires are Vittorio Open Corsa EVO-CX, and some have made it many hundreds of miles, while others have met an early end. I agree with Jeff that, at a certain point, the few extra grams of a more puncture-resistant tire, or one with less (or is it more?? JEFF!!!!) rolling resistance, are well worth it --especially on your race wheels (which for most people are their training wheels). Do you inflate before just about every ride? It's a good idea, as the cost of time is small compared to dealing with a flat. I guess I do it two of every three rides, although as the season goes on it becomes a more deeply-instilled habit. That will only help prevent pinch flats due to low inflation, and won't help at all with punctures. Speaking of which, i think I mentioned this before and I think Jeff responded --- if you go over anything that strongly resembles glass, stop and take the few moments to spin the wheel against your hand to see if any sliver or shard got embedded. It's a nuisance to interrupt a ride --- but better than have to fix a flat. Yes, now that i think about it we did have this conversation before. Or else, this is a big deja vu moment! I think I also said that since I don't wear gloves I run the risk of slicing myself during one of those tire checks. A pity that would be....but better than dealing with a flat! Good run for you today, and a wise decision to forego a whitecap swim in Mobile Bay. In my younger, more impulsive days (like, when I was 51-56 or so) I would swim in anything, but now that I've grown older and wiser I shy away from that kind of ordeal. Feel proud of yourself that you arrived at that same decision so early in your tri career!! |

Extreme Veteran 371![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mobile | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJeff - Thanks for your input. I do agree with you. I rather give up a little time then a lot from changing a tire. Steve - yes, we did talk about this, Jeff spoke about how when he is riding, he will put his glove on the tire to make sure its clean. Me I think i will pull over and check. Maybe once I get the experience that Jeff has I might try it, but still when I reah down for my bottle, my bike gets a little wobbly, I like to keep both hand on the wheel at this time. I think im going to get one of those bottles that attach to my clip on bars, this way I dont have to stop pedaling to drink and both hands are on the bars. I do inflate my tires on every ride the morning before I leave. I put in 110 lbs of air ant thought about taking it to the limit which is 120. I read the heavier you are the more air you need, but I also read about summer heat and not inflating the tires to a max to avoid burst. What are yall thoughts. Currently im about 210. Thanks everyone. Have fun on your run today Lori. Well Im heading out, i need to put 30 miles on the bike today. I was looking at my log, and I cant believe I only rode my bike twice in march and then started riding it all the time in april, which means I only been riding it for just a little over 1 mnth. I live in Texas and have left my tires inflated, all day in the trunk of my car, in the sun, whatever and never had one bursts. The pressure change is minimal. People who experience this have either grossly over inflated them or had some other issue they attributed to the heat. They are more likely to lose pressure over time-that's why you are inflating them before each ride right? |
