abqtj - 2011-07-31 6:39 PM Back from my pre-ride. I'm glad I went and scouted that route for the Oly in September. The bike course is pretty damn tough for the first 16 miles. Never-ending rollers that are JUST long enough for you not to have enough momentum to get up the other side, so lots of shifting.

Very smart to do a pre-ride, it's always good to be prepared.  Sounds like a fun day!

Hey everyone, any thoughts on my post of the 20 mile run Saturday would be appreciated.  Calf cramps seem to be an issue with all my super long runs.  I haven't tried running with Zensah socks, but will start this week.  I honestly don't think it dehydration as I think I nailed that all week and during the run.  Never felt thirsty, just kept on it.  I am also going to add more calf strengthening.

23 miles on the 20th!!!

Instead of endurolytes have you thought about using thermotabs?

I'm doing the Cleveland sprint tri this weekend.  Another USAT race....it will be pretty big.  I'm so excited to race downtown (not so excited about swimming in the Harbor tho).  We bike down the Shoreway and then we run around the Browns Stadium and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Pretty cool!!  I'm really excited!!!!

Karen, Kelly, Jen and Scott, huge numbers for all of you.  Karen, very impressive.  And Kelly, you pretty much tapered all month for LP, I think, and those numbers are still big to me.  Nice work.

I'm not liking the fact the wife will be heading back to school at the end of the month. (teaches 2nd grade).  That means my morning kid responsibilities take over again.  Along with that comes later sunrises.  ughhhhh. I shouldn't even be thinking about this and just enjoy the rest of august.

Awesome.  I racing in Bridgeland.  It's a nice community about 5 minutes from where I live.  I'm pretty stoked.  It's a sprint and the roads kinda suck.  Lots of house construction in the area means a lot of nails and housing staples on the road.  A friend of mine caught 2 flats in a 20 mile stretch the other day.

I will be racing Niantic Bay on Sunday, and believe Kelly is as well. I think it's a descent size event with 500+ athletes.  I am pretty excited about it.

I was a little concerned about it as my right calf, the one the cramped a bit on the start of my run during last weeks race, was bothering me Saturday and yesterday.  Stretching seemed to help along with the roller.  Got a great brick in this morning at 5:30. 24 miles on bike, and 5 on run.  Calf felt totally fine and legs felt strong.

I have some transition questions for all you veterans:

  1. When exiting swim, obviously you start to peel the wetsuit. Is it best to get the arms out and get it to your waist, then take the rest off once you reach your tranistion area, or do you peel the whole thing when you exit the water.  I am assuming you wait. That's what i did on Thursday but wasn't sure if there was a better way.
  2. How many of you actually run and ride without socks?
  3. Does everyone use Yankz laces? I tried a pair, not Yankz, but similiar, and on both runs, they seemed to hurt the top of my foot, bad.  Maybe at that time, my feet just needed a break, and it was a freak thing.  Anyone else experience this? it just seemed my shoes were so tight around my feet from the elastic type laces.

1.  If they don't have wetsuit strippers I'd wait.

2.  I run w/o socks.  Considering socks for my HIM though.

3.  I have Yankz in one pair of shoes and lock laces in the other.  I prefer the lock laces.  Seem more substantial and less prone to snapping.

I had Yankz in my running shoes last year, just never moved them over to my current pair yet. All but one of my races has been a reverse, so it hasn't mattered much for speed.

I sorta like them, but they are tough to get situated just right. I was thinking I need to move them to my current shoes and start fiddling with them for the race in September.

Unpeel to waist while running and then do the rest in transition.

I wear socks biking and running.  I bring a small towel to wipe off my feet before putting socks.  (Blister issues, I need to start with dry feet to help minimize.)

I tried Lock Laces, loved them for short distances.  But found on the longer events my feet moved around too much and it contributed to my blister issues.  I probably had them on too loose, but I like my shoes loose and regular laces work better for me.  But for short distances I recomment them, much quicker.

carrie639 - 2011-08-01 12:37 PM No, What's the difference?

In the word of salt supplements, endurolytes are generally viewed as being the least effective.  I've had MUCH better luck with thermotabs (and they're super cheap).

Other Jeff - if you have a very long run fromt eh beach to transition (I have had races with 1/4 of a mile or more) then strip your wetsuit in the water as once you dry off its a PITA to get them off.  otherwise i agree with teh stip to waist method.?

Jen - look at Zoots.  They have a laceless entry and seemless insole and are made for running sockless.  i have worn mine in many olys with no blister issues.  I also put some vasoline on the insides for added protection.
