Larkin - too bad you have to swim on a soccer night.  My daughter (age 10) has been doing kid tris for a couple of years and plays lacrosse. I am lucky because sometimes when I have Elsa by myself she may participate a bit in the workout in some way. Last Sat I had to swim. I wrote out my workout and then wrote one up for her. We did our workouts in the same lane and she played a bit when she was finished while I finished (my pool is typically not crowded so there was no one else waiting for a lane).

With a bunch of races approaching, I thought I'd share an e-mail I sent Chris about preparing for transitions in a sprint triathlon.  Most people over do transitions and it leads to cluttered transition areas and wasted time.  Here's the e-mail:

Essentially what you are going to do before the race is rack your bike (I'm not sure if Polar Bear has designated rack slots or if its first come first serve -- I'm guessing the race info they send out next week will include that) and arrange what you need for the bike and run next to or on your bike.  This is a sprint, you really just need the basics:

Bike
Helmet
Sun Glasses
Bottle of sports drink on the bike
Bike Shoes (if its going to be cold you may want toe covers on the outside of your shoes)
A long sleeve top (once again if its cold out)
Race belt with your number attached (I have tons of extras and can bring on for you)
Running shoes
Hat for running (if you want one)
Towel (to place all your stuff on)

When you finish the swim you're going to hop out of the pool and run to transition and put on your shoes, long sleeve top, glasses and helmet.  Make sure your bike helmet is on before you un rack your bike.  Run (carefully) to the bike out and mount your bike once you hit the mount line.  Once you're on the bike its all out for the entire ride.

When you come back into transition, dismount before the dismount line.  Run your bike into the transition area and re-rack your bike.  Helmet off, bike shoes off, run shoes on and then head to the run out.  Again, once you're on the run course, its all out.

Nothing complicated.

Thank you for this!  It is exactly what I had planned to work on this weekend.  Is there anything different that needs to be done for an Olympic-distance?  A gel or two, I imagine, for starters.

Happily I'm finally starting to feel vaguely human again.  Maybe there's hope yet.

Larkin, your race on the 19th isn't the Columbia Triathlon, is it?  I'm doing that one and it'd be great to meet up (as you pass me)...

luv2bhealthy - 2013-04-23 10:25 PM I got bit by a dog on my bike ride Sunday. Luckily it was my neighbors digg and it had it's rabies shoot.

Ouch!!!!  I'm glad it had its shots and you were able to shake it off.  I'm sorry you had to deal with that.  You can report the dog if you want, but it would probably be the end of your relationship with your neighbor.

Dogs scare me to death when I'm out running and riding.  You never know when they might attack.  Yes, I blame the owners and not the dogs.  Why are there unsupervised dogs running around?  I don't get it.  A couple weeks ago a runner was mauled and almost died on the running path in my hometown.  I won't be running on that path again.

Serious ouch.

Usually a good squirt to the face by a water bottle works.  I just don't understand people who let their dogs run loose.

Just saw my post that needed serious grammer check.  That's what I get for posting with my phone.  lol

The problem was the dogs are normally fenced in and there is also an electric fence, but come to find out, they have found a way to jump it.  So, I am riding up my road when about 5 dogs all come rushing out.  I slow up because there are two who are coming in front of my bike and I don't want to hit one and crash.  So the others start to flank me but one stays behind.  I can hear him, and the next thing I know, I feel his teeth sink into my calf.  He then lets go and runs back into his yard.  I yell because it hurt then got off my bike and walked towards the home hoping someone is there (but of couirse not), and the dog is looking at me and kicking up dirt with his back legs as if to say, "Yeah, I got you!  What are you going to do about it?"  I don't think I could have turned around fast enough with something in my hand to get him.  It all happened very quickly.  Thankfully, he didn't hold and rip!  I did a lot of doctoring and it looks like it will be fine - just a beautiful new scar.

On another note, my first tri of the season is this Sunday.

Scars are sexy. How are you feeling about the tri? I will send good vibes your way. My first tri is next weekend...and am already feeling nervous.

Thanks so much for thinking of me. Well, I have plenty of scars so I guess another won't hurt. Lol! I am a little nervous because it's my first oly,, but I'm trying not to think too much about it.

What about a wetsuit? Last year, I had a horrible time getting that thing off. It may be warm enough not to need it though...

I can't get my bike to pick up cadence, and I have a monitor.  I tried pushing the reset button and rescanning but no luck.  Any other ideas?

It could be that the two sensors aren't aligned properly.  I've found the ones I use can be sort of persnickety.  One other possibility is that the battery in your cadence meter is out.  That's what it usually is when I have tried everything else.

Matt, No I will be down in Richmond. I heard Columbia is a good one. May have to look at that next year. I am sure you can hold your own and would pass me!

I am doing two races in Jamestown/Williamsburg and then Culpeper in August. You should come do Culpeper you will make mince meat out of those hills!

X2 on this. I have had to adjust my just so slightly sometimes. Especially as the battery is dying. Is it the Garmin one? The cadence one always gives me the most trouble. It just doesn't sit right on our cranks it seems.

6 hours on the bike tomorrow and then the volume starts to come off and I can stop obsessing about being tired and start obsessing over race nutrition, swim start position, and pacing.  LOL.

I hate to admit it, but there have been a couple of times where I have done the head bob thing ever so slightly and quickly while with a patient...working on about 5 or so hours of sleep, an early early morning workout, and about 6 or 7 patients back to back...today is one of those days.

I believe that lunch today will be spent in the car with the recline all the way back and SVP on the radio.

Oh there's no way in H3ll I could do 6 hours on a trainer.  It's supposed to be low to mid 80s here tomorrow with only a 4-5 mph wind.  Hoping to get 115+ in.  There is a very safe 60 mile out and back about 10 minutes from my house.  I'll be hitting that close to twice.  Gives me a chance to top off hydration at the halfway point as I'll go through 7-9 bottles of Perform.

I have 2:45 tomorrow. I want to ride it out because I will be in a rural area of NC but bringing the trainer just in case. It is much flatter in NC as well

I have a 230 ride tomorrow and it will be the first time since I began officially training that I will be outside, as the weather has not permitted until lately. I am looking forward to it and also curious how I will do since there are really no flat areas to ride and since i really have no idea how fast I can actually go.

So there are a couple of lectures/seminars at the University of Southern Maine in June that may be of interest to some of you NE folks.

Psychological Preparation for Competition

Understanding and regulating anxiety in sports competition

The seminars are from 6/26-6/28. Not my area of clinical focus, but I always need CEUs. Maybe I will check it out.

What is your area of clinical focus?  Just curious.  My sister defends her dissertation in June (study has something to do with eating disorders and graduate students) and then she has 1 working year (residency?).  She'll have her Psy.D. after that.  She is one of my best friends.  When we speak on the phone, she often uses psych terms with me.  LOL  Recently she told me I often catastrophize events (like after the HM a couple weeks ago ).

I am a Psy.D too! My clinical focus is a) forensic - I do a lot of competency/criminal responsibility and child maltreatment e valuations b) neuropsychology and c) therapy - (trauma is an area of specialty).

I wouldn't call your reaction after your HM as catastrophizing. I would call that normal - I say as a nice rationalization because you should hear the crap that goes on in my head.

So looking forward to that . . .

I have 4:15 tomorrow.  I think I'm going to do the first 2 on the trainer and then go outside when it warms up.  Shaun doesn't like me doing super long rides outside by myself as I may have a tendancy to actively engage motorists who fail to comply with Connecticut's driving laws.
