You have every reason to be cocky. That run time is amazing and with the amount of work you put into improving it, you deserve to think like that about this upcoming race. As my very very cocky college roommate used to say, "I'm not cocky, I'm confident." Go with that because you've earned it. Kasia |

I never got warmed up the way I like but did run a bit. Went out fast and settled into a pace I could hold. I never felt real good but that was because I was running much faster than I normally do. I thought I was 3rd or 4th judging by the bald heads ahead of me but at least one turned out to be in the next age group up and the other got the overall at 18.xx. I am satisfied with the result and happy to get the "hardware" my first in a very long time, I have a small collection from my cycling days. Congrats on the placing! Seems like that PR time is here to stay. |

Veteran 418![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() , Louisiana | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDgdsemiller - 2011-05-16 3:17 AM Well this is why I do not feel safe cycling in Mobile. http://mobile.al.com/advmobile/pm_29193/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=vCT6cwwj Mobile held a Duathlon on this past Sat afternoon and a friend that I met with the triathlon club here is Mobile was hit by a car. This was in a controlled area. There were 50 police and over 100 volunteers helping with the race and it still happened. The folks down here that drive have no clue what they are doing behind the wheel. Last night was not a good night for sleep. Me and the family were heading home from my inlaws when in the opposite lane heading our way was a car and it lost control. Im thankful that it went right and not left because we would have been hit. They were going really fast and we were heading about 45mph. The turnout was not good. They lost control of their car and went into the woods where the car snapped a pine tree and still manage to roll about 40 yards past the pine tree. The woods were pretty thick but they were going so fast that no tree was stopping it. I jumped out of my truck and so did several other drivers around. The sad part was the driver was 16 and the passenger about the same age. We thought both had passed away at first, but the driver came through, her friend was not that lucky. They think their might have been a third passenger that got thrown from the car, but no one could find another body. Man I'm still shaken from this, I could have possibly lost my life or my families life. Its sad knowing a young girl was killed and also knowing that the driver will always live with that. I have seen accidents before but nothing like this, that car was so crushed that you could not tell what kind it was. The driver was pinned down on the floor and they had to cut her out. Please Please pray for the families of those kids and also for the driver. I tried to find some news on it this morning and nothing has been posted at this time, I just hope the driver makes it. Yall have a great day and please be safe out there. George, Yikes on both fronts. Glad to hear you and your family are safe. |

I'm back from a long but really fun, busy 10 days in Arizona. Started with my first Oly of the season and ended with my daughters graduation from ASU! We had a great time and I'm so proud of her I managed to get most of my workouts in. Since my plan doesn't account for the Oly I did last weekend, I just did everything a little shorter to give myself a little rest. I got some good running in the heat practice too. I'm glad to be home though! It looks like everyone is doing well and working hard here. After maintaining my weight for several months, I decided to buckle down and work on losing a few pounds again. My youngest daughter is going to join me so we can encourage each other. She's down in L.A. and we're going to track our calories so we're more aware of how much we're putting into our mouths! We both weighed in this morning and gave each other our passwords to the website we're going to use to track our food and weight. Your job, Mojistos, is to ask me now and then how it's going and force me to report On another note, we are down to one old dog. He has a tumor growing alongside his back, kind of near his kidneys. We've chosen not to treat it. He's a big dog and he's 11 1/2 and we feel he's not a surgical candidate. Our last dog strangely got one in the same spot which led him to doggie heaven. He was an older guy too. So after not seeing Buddy for 10 days, I'm noticing some changes. He's happy but I'm seeing some weakness in his back end. He has a great life and gets to go with me to the barn and to run errands. He's my ego boost because he just stares at me with hearts in his eyes I'll try to post a picture of the Buddy dog Happy Monday to all! Johanne Johanne, Congratulations are in order to your daughter for graduating. As well as your unplanned Oly! Was it a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing? It's pretty awesome nonethless. As for the dog, he's a cutie and sounds like he's had, and continues to have, a good life. |

Veteran 418![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() , Louisiana | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGeorge, You should be losing about 1-2% of your body weight a week, so figure out how many pounds you'd like to lose and work out your daily calorie deficit accordingly. And by calorie deficit I mean BMR (calories your body burns by just existing) + calories burned by exercising - calories eaten. Also, you should never consume less than 1200 calories/day for women and 1800 calories/day for men. So keep that in mind. And if your calorie deficit is consistently more than 1000 calories then your body may not be very happy with you and stop losing. That happened with me and so I had to settle for about an 800 calorie deficit to keep losing. Slow and steady was the way to go. On the other hand, each body is different so you're going to have to figure out what works best for you. Kasia |

Veteran 418![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() , Louisiana | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDgdsemiller - 2011-05-17 3:29 AM Ok, Im back with some more calorie questions. (Sorry, this stuff is just over my head and I want to make sure I understand and do it correctly) According to Caloriesperhour.com - My BMR is 2383 and RMR is 2212 (Little or no exercise & Desk Job) My BMR is 3426 and RMR is 3179 (Very Active, Hard exercise 6-7 days week). This is based on age 42, Height 5'7" weight 217. My questions are: 1) Should I use the BMR or RMR? 2) Should I use the one for Little or no exercise since the system does not no what I actually burn on training and then log in my training to see what calories I burned off training, or should I use the very active? 3)My understanding on losing weight off the website is a deficit of 500 calories per day equals 1 pound a week lost and 1000 is 2 pounds per week. (I like the 2 pounds because according to fitday I need to have a calorie per day restriction of 952 to hit my weight goal on 12/31/11. 4) So if I use the RMR no activity log which tells me I burn 2212 calories a day without training, then I add a 1 hour bike ride and according to my log that activity burn 820 calories, so my total burned calories for the day is 3032. So I will then take 3032 - 1000 restriction = 2032 (So i guess I need to eat no more than 2032 calories per day to lose 2 pounds per week. (this is if I biked 1 hour that day. I guess if I trained longer then my calories intake will increase and if I did less training then my intake will be lower. If this is correct then I like it because I can plan my day of eating based on my workout activity for that week. George, Answers are below: 1) and 2) If you know how many calories you burn during each exercise, then use BMR for little or no exercise since that'll essentially tell you how much your body needs just to survive. Add the calories burned during exercise to that and you'll have a general idea of the amount of calories you burn during the day. 3) A pound off your body is 3500 calories. So to lose a pound, you need to burn 3500 more calories than you consume. So a deficit of 500 calories a day, 7 days a week comes out to 1 pound a week, and 1000 calories/day is 2 pounds a week. 4) You got that right. Kasia |

Veteran 418![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() , Louisiana | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDSince I'm close tohaving this whole page of posts to myself, I figured I should make a separate one about this little gadget. If you want to take all the guesswork out of losing weight and want to know exactly how many calories your body is burning all the time, I would suggest investing in this little thing (BodyMedia Fit). It's an armband that you wear all day, and based on a whole bunch of factors it fairly accurately calculates how many calories you've burned. And by fairly accurately, I mean within 5%. The only problem is it's not cheap. But I highly recommend it. When I used it and counted calories at the same time, I lost bunches of weight and kept them off. I knew exactly what to expect when it came to weight-loss and thus wasn't disappointed or frustrated with the guesswork of calories in and calories out. The calorie deficits I had were almost directly the same as what I should see on the scale. So yeah, it's a neat little gadget if you're into those kinds of things. |

Veteran 418![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() , Louisiana | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDOk, last post of the night for me. I finally got back in the pool last week after taking the last few months off due to being extremely busy, and wow, it kicked my butt. Swimming fitness is completely different from every other kind of fitness and it's frustrating to be back at square one. But I know with time I will get better because that's what happened last time so I'm ok with putting in the laps. And I'm super excited that outside swimming is opening up next week. Can't wait to swim in an outdoor pool! And I stupidly agreed to work out with one of my rugby coaches during the summer. I'm pretty sure this decision was made after a few beers at the bar (as all my stupid great decisions are made) but I can't really back out now. So she called on Monday as I was comfortably napping/catching up on Grey's Anatomy on the couch (fully making use of my month of non-productivity) and I couldn't really cancel. We ended up doing HIITs, which is High Intensity Interval Training, as prescribed by our other coach as part of our during- and off-season training. I'd been dreading doing these for months, ever since we got the schedule, but I couldn't really go on a run with her around the block because I'm very self-conscious about my running speed and endurance, and preferred to run circles around the field where I wouldn't be slowing her down. It turned out to be fairly tolerable and we ended up doing the same workout twice since we thought it was too short the first time around. I mean, I know I'm slow and most people would smoke me on the sprints, but I was impressed that I had the endurance to finish the whole first workout at full pace, which is the goal of these things. So maybe I'm not as bad off as I thought I was in the running department. At this point, it seems to be a mental thing. And now I'm off to California to hang out with my parents for the week, where there will be no swimming or biking (sadness) but lots of running. At least that's the plan, and I hope I can stick to it...if only it would stop raining around here. Kasia |

You know, it doesn't ever seem that motivation is your problem, but rather a very diverse life with lots of travel. I guess that's my way of saying that I'm sure you can stay focused on Vineman.......if you can just anchor yourself to home between now and then! For me, a hiatus from training will certainly have me worried that I've lost fitness, but will also sometimes mess with my motivation. I guess that's one of the reasons why I am so hesitant to travel anywhere once race season arrives. But just to return to you, you seem to do really well at having a goal out there, and some plans on working towards it, and then settling right back to getting into the groove again. It's a good quality to have, to be sure! |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDLORI - That was a fairly large jump, and I'm not surprised that you got ftaigued and a few areas started bothering you. Following the none-too-perfect 10% rule, there would've been three runs between the previous one of 9 and the one of 12.5, so you cut a few corners ----- but you did it! That puts you just 0.6 miles from the 13.1 of race day, and adrenaline will easily carry you that distance. And your time looks really good, especially with the library and construction stops. Thank goodness for aid stations and traffic monitors during races! I think it also counts for a lot that you felt fine aerobically. Those others things -- hip flexors, shins, garden-variety fatigue -- are just occupational hazards, and as long as they fade away over the next couple of days (if not already), I'd say the jump to 12.5 was worth it. Ta-da! Soooo.....what is left between now and Madison? Was unday the longest of the long, and now it's just scaling it back down and settling into a sweet little taper? Sounds like a plan to me! |

George, I used to wear a 4 bottle fuel belt. I liked it because it held enough water for my long runs. My problem with it was the longer the run, the more the slight bouncing against my stomach started causing an upset stomach. When this happened, being far from home was not fun! I'm assuming this was why my stomach got upset since when I stopped wearing it, I felt better. You might be fine though. Then I started carrying a bottle in a holder like this: http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/CAA125/ This has worked really well for me. You can tighten the hand strap and you don't really have to hold it. Plus it has a little holder to hold a gel/keys, etc. I decided for this years races that I didn't want to hold anything during the run so I'm going to test out the nutrition being offered on my longer races during training days to make sure my stomach can handle it and hopefully I'll be hands free. Philip was a hoot.....crazy but a hoot to watch. |

I knew when planning these last few trips that I needed to intentionally plan not go anywhere for the 2 months before my HIM. One of the things I've loved about getting into doing tri's is pushing myself and realizing that I can stay focused. Seeing speed/endurance slowing getting better is good too
