| Not a Coach 11473 Media, PA | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED OK group.  Things have been a little quiet here lately.   We're just about to turn the calendar to March.  Some of you are already doing great with training and some have been a bit sporadic for a wide variety of reasons (colds, snow, etc.).  But spring is just around the corner and it is time to get yourself into some kind of steady workout routine to get ready for your races this summer (or spring for some!). So my challenge for each of you is to make the effort THIS WEEK to get some type of training/exercise on a consistent basis. Don't go crazy and drill yourself if you haven't been doing much so far. But even if you just do something light for 30min a day for 5 or 6 of the 7 days to help force yourself into a routine and learn to make time in your busy schedules, it will be healthy for you. Can't get outside or to the gym? Try a core routine or something. Just MOVE! As I warned you up front I'm not much of a personal motivator and am here mostly to offer some general advice and support, so consider this your one-time friendly "kick" to keep up with the goals you set for yourselves. | |

Nice bike!!! 10 years ago my husband bought a gorgeous new Bianchi road bike in Celeste, all campy grupo, and when I got home that night he had it in our bed, under the covers with it's "head" on the pillow on my side of the bed!!! I said, "I don't think so!" Funny guy By the way, torrential downpours in SB today, had to work out at the gym! I am taking a "Training with your Heart rate monitor" class tomorrow through our local tri club.. Have a great weekend! Pamela Edited by sbtrichick 2010-02-27 4:06 PM

So I did the big 20 mile run today to peak out the marathon training. The Garmin 305 ran low on batteries so I don't really know how long it took, but I think it was a little slower than I would like. It hurts but not as bad as I thought. It was only the last mile or two that really hurt. So, it looks like I'm ready - as ready as I'm going to be anyway. I'll be glad when this is over so I can start focusing on tri training and get back on the bike.... |

| Member 18 | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED Finally increasing my distances just a tad.  Ran 4 miles yesterday.  The hills were noticed a bit more at this distance, plus one major problem.  Right foot fell fast asleep at about 30 minutes.  Then, the left took a little nappy, as well.  I was pretty panicked about it, but did read that many, many runners have this experience.  The explanations, however, were all over the board. Any thoughts? |

Any thoughts? I have never heard of someone's foot falling asleep while running, nor have had that experience. The only thing I can think of is perhaps your shoes were too tight and it was cutting off blood circulation. I hope it goes away and it's not a reoccurring thing.

FinishI think its good your're setting goals, but don't lose the enjoyment of triathlon itself. Also don't forget that you will learn more during your first tri than you ever thought you could. A lot of the things you learn will make future events go much smoother, thus faster times - especially in transition. | Not a Coach 11473 Media, PA | Subject: RE: Tri Goals I did not set any goals based upon times of others (my first tri was a "first annual", so there were no prior results to even use had I wanted to do so), but I did have some rough goals for myself.  They were all goals I felt were reasonable given what I had done in training and I was careful not to make any of them overly aggressive goals since I had no experience to base any of it on.   The swim--my first in open water outside of some swims in the Caribbean earlier that spring--was tougher than I expected. Mostly just that it was hard to get used to not seeing anything when my head was in the water. The bike was going better than I anticipated up until I got a flat. That took me quite awhile to repair (practice this if you haven't already). The run went a little bit better, although I had the benefit of the "rest" I got while changing the flat a few miles from transition. Regardless of whether you make those goals or not, rember to have fun and that the experience will be useful in learning how to race & pace better in the future. There are always things to be learned in any race whether or not you reach any preconceived goals. You may learn that goals should be adjusted depending upon the conditions. Maybe you learn that either your training or your goals need to be recalibrated. Sometimes, you may even learn that your goals are too modest. If there were one goal I would try to have for your first, it would be to finish strong. Stay a little conservative earlier in the race, if possible. There is no better feeling than a strong finish and there will be other opportunities to push the edge more once you've dialed in the types of paces you can reasonably hold through an event.

| Member 19 Montana | Subject: RE: Tri Goals I had a set of goals for my first triathlon.  First it was not to survive the swim and not drown, then jump on the bike and catch as many people as possible and then complete the run.   Evidently I was successful on the not drowning, but have to say that I have never been as tired as I was after the swim.  I was totally wiped out half way thru the swim.  Then I had a hell of a time getting out of the pool and then almost fell back in as I was exhausted.  But after that I was great as the bike is my strong point and I was ready for the run.  What I would say is make sure that you pace yourself in the weak areas.  I never paced myself in the swim and it was a big mistake.  Good luck. |

Shorts are a personal issue as comfort is the main consideration. I am a fan of DeSoto products in this area. |

| Veteran 113 Southeastern Virginia | Subject: RE: Tri Goals I've been trying to work up to 300m in my swimming practice... but haven't gotten close yet. I can swim up to 100m without stopping... but that's it. So I'm coming home from my swim Monday night.... stressing about not hitting 300m yet, when it occurred to me that I'm only swimming 50m and 100m sets when I practice... you know... swim 50, take a break..... swim 100... take a break.... etc.   Basically, I'm preparing myself for a 100m swim, not a 300m one. Hit me like a ton of bricks.  If I want to swim 300m in a sprint, I need to swim 300m in practice.... right? Ok..... everybody...... say DUH!!!   SO... tonight I swim 300m! Freesyle, floating on my back, side stroke, doggie.... whatever it takes I'm doing 300m. It's a done deal! Count on it! If you don't hear back from me.... I died trying. |

| Veteran 260 LaGrange, GA | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED Keep at it and the distance will come!  I bet you make the 300 tonight with energy to spare.  Last night I decided to see if I could cover the 600 I need for my sprint tri and I made it.  My breathing was not very controlled but the lifeguards didn't seem too concerned.   I want to be able to go a mile non stop and then work on speed. Hopefully, in three weeks I will be there and can do more fun speed workouts. Are you doing flip turns? Do you have a place nearby that you can try on the tri shorts? I don't and will have to order online. From what I hear I will make sure to order a size larger than normal. The problem with the tri shorts appears to be the tri shirt not covering all the torso. The trisuits keep everything tucked in better....but sometimes a little too tight. Let me know how your swim went! | |

Did a couple of 100s and tried to repeat the 350 but just didn't have it in me.    I really think this is mostly mental with me... I just have to get more comfortable in the water before I can become an efficient swimmer. Nope.... no flip turns yet, I just turn and go.  My breathing is better then before, but still needs work.
