sjf21 - 2009-01-08 10:18 PM Ok, I am going to try to learn it again. I have never had much luck with flip turns but will try these drills on my next swim. The worst part has been the humiliation of practicing them as other swimmers watched me flop all over the place!

I know it is easier said than done...but try and tune those thoughts out.  Everyone has to start somewhere... I am sure Michael Phelps didn't just naturally flip and go on his first tries... Okay well maybe he did, but the rest of us mere mortal swimmers have all started out the same way.  Before you know it you'll be flippin' like a semi-pro, or at least that is what I keep telling myself!

YES!!!  And the sooner, the better!!!

Is it time to go yet?  I so want to get this weekend started... nice weather here in Houston, which means I might actually do something other than run... my butt needs some road bike action.  Okay, maybe that didn't sound right!

None the less - Happy Frickin' Friday!!!    (Week One of the SU/PU challenge is in the books!)

Sweet! You should be able to pick up a lot from your teammates, discounts always help too since triathlon is an expensive sport!

That's so awesome ....congrats!!  I'm in a running club/team, which has sort of morphed into a multi-sport club, and it's really been a huge help in learning & training.  And who doesn't love the discounts??!?!

It's been really busy at work today, just catching up with the logs... What's everyone's workout plans for the weekend?

I've got a 65-70mi bike ride to get in at some point. Hopefully tomorrow AM if the weather cooperates....

Any fun non-workout plans?
I'm normally a bum on Sat and just relax. Will have to find something to do Sunday outside, supposed to be 60-65 and sunny!

It's not quite 3 p.m. yet and I am so over this week it's not even funny.

I'm going to try for at least a 20 mile bike and a run this weekend, but a lot will depend on how I'm feeling.  I also have a house cleaning marathon planned which (while not the funnest thing on my agenda) I think should totally count as training.

I am hoping to get a ride in tomorrow morning but the weather is an issue. I have to choose - cold in the morning or rain in the afternoon. It has been a long time so I'm just excited to get out for a ride.

I should also get a run in tonight and on Sunday between football games.

I am ready to get started on the weekend but have to be on a 4 PM conference call first!

I second this!!!!

I'm going to get in a run after work tonight.  I did this workout a fair amount last summer/fall and found it helped my pace....although, today will be no where near the pace I was able to hold 6 months ago.

5 min warmup

5 min fast pace
2 min recovery
4 min fast pace
2 min recovery
3 min fast pace
2 min recovery
2 min fast pace
2 min recovery
1 min fast pace

5 min cooldown

Tomorrow morning I'm planning to meet the group for our usual Saturday morning run.  It's supposed to snow here and I LOVE running in the snow.  However, if it's especillay gross outside I'll head to the gym for a swim and a run on the treadmill, instead.  I'm heading up to CT for the day on Sunday, and hoping to get back at a decent hour so I can get in some trainer time...and at the very least I'll be starting Week 2 of the PU Challenge.

I think it's because this is the first full week I've had to work in awhile.

I like the sound of that run workout Kelli!  I actually really want to do the swim and bike workouts Eric posted earlier this week too... maybe that will be my goal this weekend.

I am one of the worst at stretching (pre/post workout)...do some very basic stretches and move on.  My flexibility could definitely use some improvement.  With that... I have seen several posts from our group members for both Yoga and Pilates.  Is one better than the other? or simply different?  If I were going to try and find a class to attend (one over the other), which would y'all recommend?

I have done some of the core strength exercises (plank & side plank), so I am really loking to improve flexibilty over core strengthening right now.  Unless of course, one closely follows the other, in these type of classes.

So the class I'm in is actually Yoga-pilates so I really don't know the difference   I'm also terrible at stretching which is why I started doing the class. On a similar note, there has been a lot of recent that says it's not good to static stretch before exercise and to do it afterward. Here's a quick article I dug up...

Adding to what Eric said I have also heard that stretching on "cold" muscles is bad.  The"couch to 5K" program on this site says the same thing.  I have been doing a light warm up then stretching when I go for a work out.  I also suggest that if you know any Martial Artists talk to them about stretching.  I was in Kung Fu for 10 years, while there I was able to jump in the air and do the splits, then land still in the splits. I'm not sure that I can still do that but I can still bury just about anyone when it comes to being limber.

For increasing flexibility in someone who currently doesn't do any stretching, Yoga and Pilates are going to be about the same.  There are a lot of differences in the two, but in terms of stretching they're unremarkable.

Personally, I prefer Yoga, but that's just me.

At most of the YMCAs you can try out a class for free before they make you pay the fee to enroll.  Additionally, at most yoga/pilates studios they have a single class fee so you can try out the class or the studio before enrolling as well.

Is it really Monday already?!

Hi everyone.  Kicked off the week on a good note this morning with a kick butt run and weight session.  The gym was PACKED at 5 a.m.  I'm trying to be supportive of the new people, but at the same time I wanted to scream when I couldn't get in a shower.

To all... Happy Monday ~ and thanks for the info.  When I stretch, it typically follows a light warm-up or post workout - to release some of the tightness that usually follows.

I beleive my flexibility was to blame during my HIM this past November... the bike got to be really tough after about mile 35... lower back while in the aero was getting tight.  I had to spend more and more time out of the saddle to help stretch out the back.  That was only a 3hr ride... 6hrs in the saddle for IMFL - I definitely need to improve in order to finsih effectively.

I know there are Yoga classes nearby... but I am not sure about the Pilates.  I am going to check in to the Yoga and see how that is.

Thanks for the article.  I also read one of the "further reading" articles.  Strengthens my thoughts of a regular stretching plan... via Yoga/Pilates.

Has anyone had any experience with the Yoga or Pilates videos? If so, recommendations?  I might be able to fit something like that in, compared to finding a time slot for an actual class.

If you find a good yoga instructor the classes are great.

Hatha is going to be the most common kind, and that will be great for improving flexibility espeically in low back/hamstrings.  I would stay away from any sort of "power yoga" or ashtunga or vinyasa, as they have pretty significant strength components to them.  Hot yoga is fun, and the formal discipline called Bikram Yoga.  However, Bikram is a series of poses that will be the same for every class.  While several will improve low back flexibility, I always find myself getting bored because I know what's coming next.

Obviously, I'm a yoga geek.  Feel free to ask any specific questions.

Check out www. collegevideo.com for a ton of yoga/stretch dvds.  I love the ones that Shiva Rea does.  The website ranks difficulty of the workouts, and you can view samples of the video.
