Ryan-
Timberman is legendary to the point that it's been on my mental list for years. The Whirlpool, Steelhead 70.3 (which I've done twice) is all of two hours away.  However, I am going to bring my family 14+ hours from Michigan to experience Timberman.  I don't think you will be disappointed with your selection.  Syracuse can wait.
Peace,
~Sam

have to agree. I've had this in the back of my mind for a while now. And even though I planned on taking this year easy after doing Lake Placid last year, once i saw that T-man was still open late in December, I figured it was meant to be.

I'm getting the bike that'll carry me through the Timberman course today.  Now that I'm 'graduating' from the sprint/OLY distances I figured it was time to graduate from racing on my roadie, too.  I'll have some real pics as soon as I bring her home but this is the bike you'll see me cursing come race day:

I'm slapping a Quaq Cinqo on it as soon as I get it home, too, which I'm just as excited about...training with power sounds like so much more fun!

LOL - my thoughts exactly!  Yet another person who will be greeting me at the finish line with a cold beer.

Ray, congrats on the awesome bike - have fun with it!

Me too!  I love passing people on beautiful bikes like that.  Laughing

Seriously though, beautiful bike.  Congratulations and enjoy!
Did you leave yourself enough money to put a PM on that thing?

Nice ride!  I'm jealous.  I've eyed that bike here and there the last couple of months.

Think I'm holding off another year and sticking with my roadie w/ clip-ons for Timberman though.

Good month for you.  New bike, Boston Marathon coming up.  Can you feel it?  The season is here!  I even swam today so it must be for real!  Been awhile since my volume bars had any of purple in them...

Much appreciated everyone.  The new baby's still at the shop, have to have the bars and cables cut...such a letdown

Mike - first thing I'm doing is shipping the crankset to Quarq for a PM.  I might be more excited for that than I am for the bike.

Wait...no I'm not .

Ryan and Mike - love the smiley face but you're both completely right...unless you get out of the water first and just burn me the whole way, which is probably closer to the truth.

Anyway, thanks everyone!

I wouldn't count on that.  My swim skills are about as awesome as a colostomy.

Haha, I'm with you Mike.  Looks like we swim about the same amount too! The one swim per month training method!

Trying to rest up the legs - they just felt so beat up this past winter. Actually checked it out during my physical and luckily the doc ruled out stuff like Lyme's - which I had doubted but you never know. Think I may take this week really easy too because next week my training starts in earnest. I was still trying to get to the pool for my morning swims but this time change is ridiculous. It's pitch black out and so difficult to get up out of bed - especially on a rainy Monday like today. Even after I'm done swimming, it's still dark out. Supposed to be REALLY nice weather this coming weekend. So you all are going to motivate me, right????

Well...I can try to inspire by example.

Saturday was clear as a bell, sunny, but a bit chilly.  It looked like it was at least 60 degrees out, but it was around 32.  I dressed well and had a steady 56 mile ride, averaging 18.8 mph.

Sunday, albeit less sunny, I pulled off a 10-mile run, averaging 7:47 per mile.  The downside to that is my calves were tight to the point that I felt the need to walk temporarily at 7.5 miles.  They did ease up a little, but still tight.  The rest of the day they felt tight, but today they feel normal-ish.

Today...if all goes well, I hope to ride 20 miles on my Litespeed with the first half relaxed and the second half fast-ish.

On different note, I just posted a book review of sorts for Eric Blehm's, The Last Season, if you want to give it a look.

Be well.
Peace,
~Sam

SAM -

Awesome riding.

Have you tried compression for you calves?  It really helped me.

Cheers,

Mandy

Ryan- Thanks.

Mandy-
Hey, I like the new pic!  Thanks for the ride kudos.  As far as compression...I do wear compression sleeves, but I only wear them as preventative and recovery measures.  For example, I'm going to attempt to run today after school/work so I'll have my compression sleeves on all day during the day, but not while I run.  I know it sounds funny, but I don't want to be dependent on them.  Fortunately I will also be swimming after I run, which generally is a help.
On another note, I got caught up with you blog this morning.  Good stuff.  By they way, is it Cold Snap, or Cold...Snap!
Good work braving the cold.

The sun is out!  It should be near 60 today and in the low-to-mid-70's the next three days...Whew who!!!

Are your calves spending enough time on the foam roller?

Glad you like the picture!  That is my buddy Bailey. He isn't a runner, but he keeps the couch warm for me when I get home from a long cold run like this weekend.  YOU are right, I should have titled it Cold...Snap!

Jealous of your weather.  It was 30s and raining here. Good running weather...

Hi all - Mike here.  Just finished Oceanside and immediately started looking for another HIM.  I did Lake Stevens last year and can't decide between a return visit there and Timberman.  This one looks like it would be a blast.  Hoping to pull the trigger on reg soon before I get shut out.  Very much enjoyed getting caught up on the pre-race chatter (took a while haha), but now I think I have a pretty good feel for what to expect from the race.  Will be following up on the suggestions for accommodations here shortly.  Thanks and good luck with your training.
