Thanks for the coupon Scout.  I might use it.  I've got one, but I'd like to have another so that I don't have to keep remembering to move it from one thing to another.  (I often forget to move it.)

I have become such a cold-wimp since leaving the midwest.  It only got up to around freezing today.  I moved my bike ride inside to the rollers.  I did run outside (no choice, really!) and that was bad enough.

Good morning everyone.  Kids go back to school today.  I think they're glad.

And today is a big day for me:  the pool FINALLY opens again.  Now I feel like I can start getting on top of my winter swimming goals.

How about everyone else?  What's in line for today?

Good morning!
I reserved my oldest daughter as a babysitter for  this evening. So, I'll be going to the Y for a run right after work. If the pool isn't crowded, I'll try to get a 15 minute swim in also. I haven't been in the water since October, so I really need to make this happen.

I'll be going for a run at some point today.  Probably 5 or 6 miles.  Hopefully my work day will cooperate and I'll be able to get out this afternoon.  If not, I'll be running tonight after DS is in bed and after my cub scout committee meeting.

Good morning all. I am such a weak person! Alarm went off at 5:00 am and I just could not get out of bed. It's 4 degrees here in St. Louis. The thought of going to the Y to swim at 5:00 am was like an anchor holding me under the covers.

Well, spinning class tonight. Maybe I can catch a swim afterwards.  I really need to "man it up" with this cold and "just do it".

Sorry that I've been incommunicado for the past 10 days; I've been on vacation and didn't have access to a computer. Here are my updates to a couple of threads:

Weight loss Goals

Sign me up for 1 lb a week. My overall goal is 12 lbs by 5/9 (first race of the season); it was 9 lbs, but I put on 3 over the past 3 weeks since I injured my knees playing my kids' Wii. Speaking of which, today is the first day that I can walk normally without any pain. As I still have 125 days until my first race (I keep a running counter on my whiteboard at work), I'm going to take one more week off to ensure that they heal completely. This is my first injury and it has certainly been a frustrating process…

2010 Goals

- Complete 4 sprints this year

- Don't finish last in age group in first race / finish in top 50% in races 2 & 3 / finish in top 25% in race 4

- Stay injury-free

- Maintain race weight through first race in 2011

Screen Name

I went to Colby College and our mascot was the White Mule - I was also the slowest one around. So, my other goal for this year is to become a faster mule… Still a mule, just faster!

Mark, welcome back! Those are some great goals.  As you might have seen if you read through everything, Stu (juneapple) is kindly looking after our January weight challenge.  We send him via an inspire or PM) our progress (positive or negative!) on Saturday and he posts on Sunday.

Nothing on the agenda for this evening.  Taking a recovery day from my run yesterday.  Longest run yet of 7+ miles...amazing thing is that is was at a 9:30 something pace;  my breathing felt good and was OK with the pace, but legs were a bit sore (more than usual) in areas that generally are sore (Rt knee and left ankle).  I may have pushed it a bit.  I am going to look into a new set of insoles for my running shoes.  I have the new pair of running shoes Asics 2150's that just came in but I want to try them out around the house first and then out on a short run next week.

Back at it tomorrow with a Indoor Cycling Class in the early AM and Core workout in the PM and maybe a dip in the whirlpool after.

I just came back from a treadmill run at the Y. I forgot all about the New Years Resolution crowd that will be there for the next few weeks. I try to be nice and patient and polite, but sometimes, I want to shout "If your standing on a treadmill, get off your cell, and start moving!"

Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding! Swimming BREAK THROUGH! Had spinning class tonight. After wimping out because of the cold this morning, missing a swim, I thought I would get the swim in after cycling. I got in the pool (no pull buoy mind you) I started to swim. 100m, I feel good I'll go another 100m, still feel good, another 100m, I'm in the zone! Swimming without effort.  I'm thinking I can do a mile! At 700m I hear "Hey BUDDY, can I share a lane"? Uh, what, excuse me? "Can I share a lane"? MY FLIPPIN ZONE BUBBLE BURST! 700 FLIPPIN meters! I stopped swimming and said sure. Oh well, maybe a mile next time.

BTW, I wonder if I need to warm up more during my morning swim. Maybe tha't what has been holding me back.

Hey me too, and it's not even that cold here. Had planned a 2 hour workout, went to the gym and walked for 45 minutes. Went back tonight and did my workout. It is so much nicer for me to get it done in the morning, too much going on with dinner, homework, etc at night. Didn't do too well on the eating today, there is still a ton of holiday goodies in the office.

I do not like sharing the lane with anyone as well.  I asked a person once if I could, but it felt like I was a total inconvienence to the guy so I will wait for one to come available or go at times when I know no one is generally going to be there.  Most of the time it is not an issue except for very early in the morning.

Sounds like you were dialed in StlPhil.  I have found it beneficial to do at least a 200 to 300 yd. warm-up.  If I don't my lowers shoulders (side of the arm where you get your shots) are very sore the next day to the point where I need ice to deal with it.

Good morning everyone.  Phil, that is a great breakthrough!

Resolutionists:  Yep, they're out there.  I think we can distinguish between the obligation to acknowledge that everybody has a right to be there, to be polite and even encouraging to everyone, etc., from the permission to be annoyed and impatient with people who are themselves being impolite (by, for example, standing on a treadmill for 5 minutes talking on their cell).  That's the distinction that I try to draw, anyway.

They were in the pool yesterday at my pool, but I got there before most people were off work, and that helped.  By the time I left, the place was crawling (no pun intended) with would-be Phelps's.  But I normally do have to share a lane -- sometimes circle swim -- at my pool.  You get used to it.  As long as the others in the lane have a clue, it isn't a big problem.

Have a great day everyone.

ran 6 miles this morning. went to go swim and found out that the pool is closed for "maintenance" until march 1 or so-WTF. i am not happy. yes i know i will have more for (time in the saddle), pounding out lots of miles on the pavement. i like the pool and was making some steady progress. so going forward i am going to try to get four or more bike rides in. that will help to generate some weight loss. and good morning to everyone.

What, are they building a new pool?  That's a long time. Seems like you should get a discount or something.

You might try some dry-land swimming with stretch cords.  I did some for the first time over the break when my pool was closed and quickly became a fan.  I was back in the pool yesterday and could definitely feel that it had helped.

That's ridiculous! Is your gym affiliated with another one that you can use for the next 2 months? What a terrible time of year for them to do maintenance.

Scout:

I'm not fast -- my all out 100m sprint PR is around 1:22 (= 1:15/100yd), a pace that a lot of swimmers can maintain indefinitely! -- but I can tell you what I've done to get faster.

1.  Drills followed by swim.  So I'll do something like 3x50 of a drill, then do some swimming to try to ingrain what I've learned doing the drill.  My favorite drills are catch-up, one-arm (both of these revealed serious problems with my breathing that were slowing me down), fingertip drag (helped me to lead with the elbow on recovery, and helps with rotation), and hesitation (or touch your shoulder on recovery, which helped a lot with the timing of my pull).  However, I'd say that which drills really help depend on your particular form problems.  So perhaps what really helped me was to have my coach look at my stroke and tell me what my biggest flaws are.  I haven't seen her in a while, but I'm going to start back up soon and learn about my NEW flaws!

2.  Practice going fast.  So I'll do sets like 10x50 or 10x100 swimming just a few seconds per hundred under my sprint pace, with enough rest in between to be able to maintain that pace on each repetition.

3.  Lately, I've also started really focusing on being streamlined.  I find it easiest to focus on this after a flip turn while I'm just gliding before I start to stroke again -- then I try to recreate that feeling while I'm swimming.  I think it is helping.

What have others done?  Like Scout, I want to get faster, and so to hear what has helped others.

Along with the above, which are drills and speed workouts (50s, and 100,s on about 20 sec. rests at a fast pace) that I do as well I do the closed fist drill, but use a bouy.  I also use the Shark Fin Drill and another that practices the idea of body rotation while staying streamlined (can't remember the name of the drill) all of which have illustrations on BT.

Scout what is your 100 yd. or 100 meter T-Pace; a pace you can maintain for quite sometime.  I recently figured mine out and it was approx. 1 min. 42 sec./100 yds.  I'll use this as a starting point and see if I can become more streamlined and perfect my stroke technique to become faster.  I have this groovy scissor kick that I am slowly trying to move away from a move to the Total Immersion two beat kick, but until I get better at the total immersion two beat kick I am not ready to give it up because it serves me pretty well.  I'll check it again in a couple months.
