chasingkona - 2010-01-21 8:12 PM Hey Tammy I posted this question in another thread but was wondering what I should do next week. Should I take a recovery week next week since it's my 4th week in the cycle or since I am in the prep phase and not having a high volume or high intensity should I just keeping going at my pace? Check my logs and let me know. Thanks

I like to do a build, build more, build a little more, recover.  Since your volume isnt huge I would say youd be fine to do another build week.... like build 4 weeks then recover.  Once you get into IM training go back to three week builds.  EVERYONE is different and you maybe able to keep 4 weeks all the time.  OR you maybe able to make your recover weeks just 5 days.... just things you have to work with.

So when did you start running again?  You are not suppose to vomit when you are done

wanna race - 2010-01-22 9:33 AM Hey Tammy, What is a good base to be at before I start my IM training? Thanks, Mace

Really the purpose of a base building period is to build your aerobic system... you do this by working about 70ish percent of your LT.  Its a time to work on technique/ form and strength.

Its hard to hold back for this large amount of time (and you can gradually build up towrds the end of your base training) but it will pay off- menaing you should be able to run/bike fatser at a lower HR by the end of this time.

So- Im not sure what you are really asking?

Do you mean how far shouldyou be running biking swimming?

well i have met 2/3 of my goals.  i did decide on a plan to follow although i tend to do more than what the plan calls for.  i also ordered the training bible to help tailor the plan more towards my needs.  i also was able to swim 100m straight for the 1st time.  i don't eat any better but i'll continue to work on it.

also, i got aerobars and they make a huge difference.  i'm happy with the way things are progressing.

I'm a few pounds away from what i wanted to lose for the month. I'm heading in the right direction on my weight loss. My training is going good for the month. I am sick of the cold weather and ready for the spring.

Congratulation Coach!

Spring!!!! It feels like spring up here in Canada, it's January and raining with temp of plus 4 celcius (39 F). I've been running outside which has been great since I have no snow or ice to worry about. Just beautiful, but I know a snow storm is lurking some where, some time soon.

Well, my main goal for January was just to get myself ramped up to start the 20 week HIM training plan. Today is Day 1. I've built my run about as fast as I've felt is safe without getting injured, and feel like I'm at a pretty good point for starting the plan. The first few weeks have 60 minutes as the long run, and I managed 45 yesterday. I'll probably be a bit behind the run portion of the plan for a while, but not a big deal....

Great job on passing the exam and becoming a Certified USAC Level 3 Cycling Coach!! Tammy, you rock. I have to say that I have made tremendous progress since you have been my coach. You have been such an inspiration to me!! Does this mean that you are going to raise my coaching fees since your are certified?

Congrats!

So while I have been slowly logging my mileage and training, I received some news yesterday that is going to definately have an impact on my training in the months to come.  It is definately going to have more of an impact on my race schedule late in 2010 and 2011.  It's not really triathlon related, but it certainly is life related.  We found out yesterday that my wife is pregnant.  I know that I'm not supposed to divulge that type of information until 3-4 months in, but honestly, it's a pretty big deal for me and I have to tell someone before my head explodes.  While we have twins already (from her 1st marriage), this will be our first together (and my first ever).  I'm pretty excited, a little stressed, but mostly just excited.

That's going to complicate my training plans for an IM distance event next spring.

For my Jan goals I would say that I will accomplish one and almost be there for the second one. By the end of the month I will have approx logged in about 15-16 hours on the bike, and I had originally set out to put as much time in the saddle as possible while I cant swim and just back into running. My legs feel great and fresh with the time I have put on the bike. I also started trainning in HR zones on the bike so these sessions on the trainer have been more valuable then any other winter. As for my second goal of getting back into the pool by the end of the month. That might be delayed until mid Feb. I really dont want to risk any chance of swimming before my arm and shoulder are 100% especially since swimming puts so much strain on the shoulder. Until then I will take the extra time and put more time in the saddle and in my runners. 55 days til spring!

Swim went very well again this morning. Tried to count strokes, out of six 25m lenght I was consistent at 10 strokes with my right arm (start with right finnish with right with left extended reaching wall). So that would mean I take about 19 stroke per 25m. I've caught myself using only arms, so I know that if I properly used my lats to pull me I can easely reduce stroke count. Next swim, Friday, I will work with my catch and make sure I pull with my lats throughout the whole workout. This is where my concentration will be untill I no longer have to think about it, well almost. I believe I can safely say that I stay long consistently now without thinking, arms are relaxed on recovery and not using my shoulders. Progress in pool

Alright Tammy couple questions for ya. As you probably have assumed IMWI is my A race this year, but I also intend on doing the Madison Marathon (1/2) as well as another A race. The marathon is on May 30th, so just a little over 3 months before IMWI. I am hoping to put together a run in less then 1:45 in hopes to really ramp up my running ability so that I can have a strong IM marathon come September. I plan on altering my traning in April and May to prepare for the marathon, but dont want my training for IMWI to suffer to much. Do you think a 1 week taper with a week recovery would be possible? Thoughts? Comments? Concerns? Oh and I definately plan on taking gels every run now, never thought that I would need one when running at a low HR for less then 30 mins, but I guess I should always be prepared.

No a May hm is not going to affect anything in Sept.  Thats a great time for a hard hm.  YOull have a good marathonbuild after that...so it should work out well.  And youll be totally ready for your HIM run- your doing Racine- right?

You really are goingto have to wtach your nutrition when you start packing on the training hours..... its a good thing to get used to now.  Kind of watch what you eat and pre training meals and see what works and what doesnt.  Be ready to eat A LOT

Yes I am planning on doing Racine 70.3, however, the week before is the Rhode Island 70.3 and I have some family and friends that I have not seen in years just outside of Providence. So I might opt to do that one instead, not too sure yet, I'll need to figure out my travel plans first. I do believe that Craig Alexander is racing Racine so no matter what I'll be their watching or competing!

Or perhaps the full marathon?  The Madison marathon was my first long run in 2007.  I had 3 weeks of recovery time and still did okay, but, that depends on your plan schedule.
