reid15 - At about 4-1/2 miles I realized I was going at a good pace (for me anyway), with good form (for me anyway) and had that "I love running" moment that doesn't happen very often for me. I got home tired but happy. It reminded me why I do this stuff. Have a great weekend! Art

Hey that's awesome!  I've discovered I live for the endorphin rush that comes at the end of the run!  Hehe not that I don't enjoy the run, often I do as well, but as I finish I get the most amazing euphoric feeling of well being.  All those endorphin receptors being flooded with happy chemicals!  But this has only just started happening recently, so I'm guessing you have to get to a certain level of fitness for it.  And besides that, I also feel proud that I started the day by running for 6 or 8km or whatever.
Something else I've noticed, is now people have stopped laughing at me (well at least in front of me), everyone is always asking about my training, and I have a new camaraderie with colleagues/friends/other parents etc who also train..  today the mother of my son's friend (who is an amazing athlete and runs off-road marathons etc) asked if she could come do some OWS training with me.. yay triathlon training is also good for my social life!

I am having a bit of nagging metatarsal ache and lateral ankle pain in my right foot.  Any suggestions? (I'm not much of a sports med doctor), am strapping it, but not keen to rest as my tri is in 5 weeks today..

Hope everyone had a great weekend
melyssa

missyNZ - 2010-01-15 2:12 PM by the way that is a photo of where I went for my swim and run today.  Even though the ocean is cold, I think it's paradise!

It certainly is! Thanks for the inspirational photo.

Running pains (that are significant, increase during a run, or recur) are almost always from doing too much too soon or too fast or both. 10 lbs overweight really isn't that much--probably not due to that. Do a little less, a little more slowly--keep backing off until you aren't having pain and rest the foot entirely for a few days if you need to. Your tri won't suffer, I promise! Once you find a pain-free threshold, then build back up from there.

That goes for everybody!

Running in sand does help build ankle strength as well as (oddly enough, but true) flexibility or ROM. But SLOOOOWLY and carefully, if you want to do it. I'd run no more than a couple hundred metres in sand at first. If you do it on hard-packed sand, make sure it's as flat as possible or if it has a bank, do half one way and half the other way.

A BIT of sand running is not a bad idea, as it's a fairly safe method of building strength while running, AND ... most triathlons, unless the swim is in a pool, have a sand or gravelly run portion from the water to transition one.

As for the pain, not much advice except for the above recommendations--yes, strapping it (compression), the C of RICE ... Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

Marcea - 2010-01-15 7:54 PM Hi there, Sorry Im such a sucky poster!! Im just starting out I guess, and I just dont have that much to say about it just yet!! Ive been working out this week, some cardio work out and walk/run thing too. Running is tough. Its just hard to believe that I could get better at running when it can be so discouraging! You guys are all much more experienced than me.

Also I had to drop out fat rabbit sprint tri because it conflicted another commitment (going out of state) So I signed up for one earlier in June instead of end of June. But this time I signed up for a duathlon. I thought maybe I could just focus on running and biking for now and then if I can do it! I will sign up for Tri afterwards and focus on swimming as well. What do you guys think? Do you think a spinning class would help or regular excercise bike will work fine?

Anyone here experienced the duathlon? This one is just a sprint, 3.11 mi run and 12 some mi biking and 3.11 mi run.  Its nothing BIG but I am concerned how my legs may feel like lead?! its already feeling lead and I havent gone 1 min running nonstop! haha. I am going out for walk/run today at lunch. My goal is to try everyday during lunch if I can.

Thanks!
Marcea

You are NOT a sucky poster, Marcea Manatee!!! We love having you and thanks for checking in. Walk/run is a great way to get into running. I still do run/walk intervals because frankly I'm faster that way, can cover much more run distance, it's so much easier on the legs (easier recovery).

I am sure you can "du the du". Just focus on running and biking as you said. I would definitely recommend following a training plan here, though ... ask if you're wondering which ones or how to modify or make them cover a certain number of weeks.

Spinning classes vary greatly in quality. It's best to find one where the instructor is an outdoors cyclist, too. And remember--you can always do your own thing, sit there and pedal away happily and enjoy the music and energy and inspiration, but especially, not a lot of standing or popping up and down in the saddle. Steady-state cycling is where it's at, with some pushing thrown in there once in a while for fun.

Art, thanks for your advice.  I posed the question a couple of other places, too, and my darling husband's faith in me aside (he just ran his first Marathon last weekend and is on a runner's high, methinks!), I have come to a better conclusion that running the 5K at that race, but training like I am going to run a 10K, would be better for me - double instead of triple my volume, and hopefully add some speed in the process.  Much saner.

Yes, MUCH saner, much better, and ultimately, the best way to build running fitness and volume is .... sloooooowly. Small increases, easy running.

Just wanted to check in with everyone. Seems like a lot of you are starting this for the first time. Congratulations. It really can and does become a lifestyle. Stick with it, you won't regret it. Or, at least I don't think you will.

Lynn's right, the first couple of months are the hardest. You're not sure you'll ever be able to swim that first 100 yards or run that first mile without stopping. Muscles you didn't know you had HURT. You're busy at work, your kids get sick, you're struggling to find time to get everything done and miss a couple workouts. We've all been there. But then stuff like this happens....

I'll take any tips you're willing to hand out! I guess it's just general endurance... after swimming 100 yards I'm worn slap out.

Rebecca,

that's not at all unusual, so don't feel bad in the least

as far as endurance goes - take it one lap at a time, focus only on technique and doing it one lap at a time, don't worry about speed at all

my first training partner was in the same place you are - when we first started training together he could barely swim 25 yds without pooping out

i encouraged him to just continue to do what he could, we worked on technique and as he became more efficient in the water he was able to go further

in a year he went from barely being able to swim the length of the pool- to not only kicking my azz, he did a HIM -

it's very easy to get discouraged, so many moving parts - i'll post some general tips and hope you find them helpful and we can go from there

I dug out my training material from my tri clinic and thought I would post a few tips based on people's level of interest.

I thought a good place to start might be by listing out some of the common freestyle errors -

  1. Dropping the hand and shoulders when the hand enters the water
  2. Sweeping the hand out too far away from the body during the recovery phase of the stroke
  3. Pushing water down in the first third of a stroke instead of pulling back and pushing water up in the last third of the stroke
  4. Kicking hard with too large of a motion
  5. The arm crossing over to the opposite side of the midline of the body on the pull phase
  6. Lifting the head out of ht water to breath
  7. Not exhaling fully during the pull phase, or holding your breath while your mouth is under the water.
  8. If you haven't had the benefit of formal lessons or coaching, some of these things can be hard to self diagnose, but hopefully is some good food for thought.

I'm so glad you posted these. Question - on #1 is this the keeping the elbows high advice? If not is there another way to  describe the action we want? On #2 sorry to be dense, but what is exactly the recovery phase? So on #3 do we want to do the opposite? pull back on first part and then what on the last 1/3rd. As you can see I don't have much formal swim training. I've had a few rudimentary lessons and swim consistently, but I KNOW I could be waaayyy more efficient. Thanks for your patience.

Thanks so much for the responses! And the tips! I ran/walked for 30 mins yesterday. It was a struggle for sure! I seem to do better if I have a person with me doing same thing than by myself, I get discouraged easily by myself.

It is nice to know that you have been there where I am right now and now doing much better today! I am going to keep trying! I noticed yesterday few hours after I did that "jog" my 2 herinated disks are acting up. It was so painful lastnight by the time I got in bed and I slept horribly! Stupid disks! I think Im going to have to do biking today instead of jogging.

Beth- I did look at the tri plan for training. ( I am not a paying member yet) But I cannot find duathlon plan?

I cannot imagine running in sand. That is tough!!

I am not really sure how much I weight.. the scale here at work isnt very good. It says Im between 148 to 142 haha. I have started watching what I eat. I am hoping to get down to 130 at least. 125 would be awesome but I highly doubt it. I probably would gain muscle before I would get to that 125. but muscle is good!   btw Im 5'4"

Do you guys take vitamins or take something religiously for your fitness?

I hope the training is going well for all of you!! Sounds like you guys are doing great!!

Oh by the way...  when I excercise, especially the running, I get extremely thirsty!! my throat gets sooo dry! if I keep drinking water, by the time I get back, i feel yucky because I have so much water in me!! haha. How do you combat this? or is it because Im breathing so heavily its drying out my throat?

Marcea, make sure you are good an hydrated before you go out -- that is, drink plenty of water all day long, so that you don't feel quite so thirsty when you are exercising.  When you are exercising, try to drink slow sips rather than chug to keep your mouth wet without getting all sloshy.

So I finally was able to do a morning swim!  I met a gal I found here on BT at our Y when the outdoor pool opened at 6. We were the first ones at the pool, and swam for an hour.  We chatted on and off between laps, though she is much better than me (at all three sports -- she's a former personal trainer, has done many marathons and centuries and a few sprints, but fell off of swimming but is now journeying toward ironman).  Still, it was so great to have someone else there too.  And I wanted to kiss the lifeguard -- after my frist 25 M, as I was gasping for breath, I joked "I suck at this" and she replied "your form is great, you just need to work on your endurance."   That was SOOO what I needed to hear!  That made me feel like less of a dork, and at the end of the hour, I felt invincible.  As we parted, KC said "now you get to brag to your Manatees!" and I felt amost guilty that yesterday was so crazy that I didn't.    We'll be meeting T-Th, and I am going to try to swim on Sunday afternoons, too, while the boys are at wrestling.

Beth, I don't even understand that list to self diagnose.  I've been watching some Total Immersion swimming videos, though.  I e-mailed the coach over in Orlando to see about perhaps doing a session or two once I have my endurance up more.  In the meantime, next week I start in earnest the Ruth Kazen couch to 1 mile swim program.  This week, I am trying to work up to 100m without stopping.

Yanti, is that a new Avatar pic I see?  Beautiful!

OK, to WORK.  This training thing would be a lot easier if it weren't for my pesky job!

Hi Manatees,

I have been sick with the stomach flu, not fun at all. Yuck.

No training at all since last Tuesday and no training this week either.

I'm thinking of taking a short walk today just to get out of the house and breathe some fresh air.

The only good thing about being sick is I lost about 5 lb.

So now I'm down to 150,6 lb (68,3 kg).

The only good thing about being sick is I lost about 5 lb.

So now I'm down to 150,6 lb (68,3 kg).

Sorry you've been sick, but reminds me of the line in Bridget Jones "I'm only a stomach flu away from my goal weight." Lol!

Btw-- Had a glorious swim this morning, Manatees. I was thinking of what Tinkerbeth was saying, too. Kept my elbows high and my head down and didn't punch too much on the kick. Found out mornings around 8:15 are a good time (at least today) for swimming at the pool for nice and quiet and my own lane. I actually think I felt like I was pulling some water today. OMG! Say it IS so. We're supposed to get round 3 of our rainstorms today so glad I made it in before the deluge.

Great that you are making progress in the pool. I want to start swimming too. My husband has bought TI and is watching the DVD and reading the book. I just want to see if I can do it too, I mean swim TI.

Edit: I took a walk today, 4K in 40 min, and it felt good.
