croyston - 2010-05-04 1:50 AM Sorry to hear about the bad weather, and even more sorry to hear about your ankle.   Hopefully ice and some rest will get you back to training.

I believe I would have done the same thing with the marathon.  If it's not a race that I have been building for, I figure it's not worth 4 hours of misery to participate in conditions like you were facing.

  Chris

Thanks Chris I appreciate the support. Being in the uk you know what it was like last weekend and yep as it was not my goal of the year, but a training run so why put myself through hell (and put Mrs T through coming to watch !)

ankle feels slightly looser this evening after swimming today so i think i will be racing in 2 sundays time ok, just not 100% match fit, but still racing which is the main thing.

My main race atm is 4.7.10 bournemouth oly so still on target for that,

note to self, no more rugby !!

In the end, it was probably a good thing that you skipped the race just for recovery reasons.  Without the marathon your tri training for your next two races will be better.  Sounds like it was miserable for those who did run!

I suspect you'll get over the rugby injury quickly.  Still not as bad to recover from as a marathon!

Ran up South Table Mountain yesterday in extremely high winds for boot camp.  Check out the photo link below.  I am in the blue pullover.

Our boot camp group ran through sleet last week, and high winds this week.  Our trainer keeps it interesting!  Our last class is on the 13th, where we will see how our baseline mile has improved.

Since I work for a brewery, we have some "sick" advantages to use tools around the property in our workouts.  Today it was empty kegs.  Take a look at today's boot camp photos.

Hey all, here is the race report from the time trial I did.  It was pretty hard and I had a rough time, but I learned a lot.

Deb, those pix are awesome.  Your boot camp instructor is cool.   And on a side note, I am jealous of where you live...so beautiful.

Q,
This is awesome.  Especially liked your comments about champagne and burritos.  But this is my favorite.

It really is all about looking good while killing yourself slowly in public.  ;-)

Great race report!

If you want to look good on the bike and ride faster, buy red clothing.  It's the fastest color!

Hi All!  This is what I PMed to Tiernan yesterday.  It occurred to me that it might be useful for others.  In the end, if you're doing a sprint or an Oly I think the most important thing is to eat a small meal 2 to 3 hours before the race start to make sure it's well digested by race time.  I don't believe that, for relatively short races like these, what you eat in the days before the race matters all that much as long as you eat healthy stuff and in normal quantities.  I don't really change things up for Half Ironmans either, though might for a full Ironman if I ever get the desire to do one...

Keep in mind that in this case the race starts at 4 pm.  Most of our races around here start between 7 and 8 am so waking up early to eat is a bit of a burden...

Hey Tiernan! I hope this message doesn't get to you too late. I started the new job this week and haven't been checking BT too often....

On race day I'd plan for a large breakfast on race morning. I don't think it's too important exactly what you eat at that point since it will be 6 to 8 hours before race start and will be well digested by race time. Also, if you have trouble eating soon before a race because of nerves, getting a filling meal at breakfast is even more important.

I'd go with a light lunch about 3 hours before race start. My pre race meal is usually fruit and muffins washed down with gatorade; I figure this will get plenty of sugar into my system and will be well digested by race start. I'll sip on gatorade or similar until about an hour before race start, then stop. If I'll be taking in a gel before the race I'll wash it down with water about 20-30 min before race start. On hot days I'll drink more water just before the race.

I hope this helps. Good luck at the race!

Hi Brian & Everyone,

My 4pm race went well considering i had minimal training for the past 3 weeks and i am now fit and healthy to get stuck back in and fired up for my sprint this coming sunday.

Brian thanks for your help, i took your advice, ate regular breakfast (werll not exactly as bigger than normal but i did not skimp on it) and snacked upto 3 hrs before the race.

My race report is here if your interested, I hope everyone is well !

Did my official first triathlon today.  Race went really well and would have been even better if I could run

I'm going to take two weeks off completely from running and biking to give my calf some time to heals.  After that I'm going to start biking some, but will hold of another week or two on the running.  I plan on spending a lot of time using the stick to massage my calves, along with ice and compression over the coming weeks.  I'm also going to start focusing on more calf strength training ( calf lifts, etc ) to hopefully avoid the strains from coming back.

Congratulations on your first triathlon!!

i second the idea of rest, then slow build up to get over the calf injury.  Sometimes trying to recover from an injury while training doesn't work very well...

Take advantage of the rest from running to pick up more on the bike and swim!

Friday's race report.  Not a stellar accomplishment for my level of endurance, but I finished.  Did I mention it was freaking HOT?!?!?

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=211306

Forgot to add that I stopped to fix a chain for a gal on the side of the road during the bike portion.  Couldn't just leave her there.

Deb, good luck on your OLY!!! Very exciting.

Brian, I am really concerned about this hurricane...hoping it is not impacting you and your family directly.

T--you out there bro'?

Anyone else???

At any rate, have a great 4th of July weekend...not a whole lot of racing this week....

I'm back!!  Anyone else still hanging around this thread?

I've had a four month transition into a new job (going great), new city (we love it!), now home (we're thrilled with it), new school (happy kid!) and new friends (going slowly).

Most of May, June, July, and half of Aug was little to no training.  Now I'm back in the swing of things and am logging workouts again!
